"In response to media claims that Al-Qaeda operatives are arming themselves over-the-counter at U.S. gun stores, NSSF President Doug Painter wrote the New York Times and other newspapers that 'The Government Accountability Office report demonstrates that the FBI-run National Criminal Instant Background Check System (NICS) is working in screening potential firearm purchasers. The FBI is alerted when a person on a government watch list purchases a firearm and can take whatever action law enforcement deems appropriate. There is no need for lengthening the 24-hour period for destroying background check records since other records covering the purchase of a firearm are available to law enforcement, if needed. ...'"

"A RECENT WAVE of violent attacks with axes and cleavers raises the issue, once again, about the effectiveness of restricting, banning, or simply scaring people away from owning firearms."

"In London, a man was brutally murdered with an ax on a busy street in an affluent part of town. In San Diego, a man terrorized a neighborhood with an ax. And in Australia, a man nearly lost his hand after being attacked with a meat cleaver."

"Each episode represents a horrific act of senseless, brutal violence that should be unheard of. Yet all three incidents were reported within days of each other. And since we cannot blame the presence of firearms in these crimes we must wonder whether the absence of firearms was a contributing factor." ...

"Imagine that a known terrorist walks into a gun shop and buys an assault rifle or other high-powered weapon. Imagine that person is confronted over the purchase but argues it is legal, and that none other than the U.S. Department of Justice and the National Rifle Association agree with that interpretation of law."

"Now imagine that this isn't a bad plot from a TV crime show but everyday reality in America. In fact, 35 gun purchases by people on the nation's terrorist watch list were approved in a five-month period last year. And those are just the ones uncovered by the Government Accountability Office in a study done for Congress." ...

"A week after the Government Accountability Office released a report exposing a loophole in the law that allows terrorism suspects to easily obtain firearms, Congress is, of course, wasting no time in acting to ensure that not only are terrorists safe from scrutiny, but that all gun sellers are shielded from scrutiny as well."

"As surprising as it may seem in the light of all the public attention on the terrorism report, the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law will hold a hearing Tuesday ... on legislation that would grant unprecedented immunity from civil litigation to all gun dealers and manufacturers, even in cases of obvious negligence." ...

"It looked like a classic gangland hit. A Mercedes abandoned on a Brooklyn highway. A bullet-riddled corpse slumped across the seat."

"The dead man was Eddie Lino, a Gambino crime family 'captain'. It was November 1990, the height of the Mafia's brutal civil war."

"In the years that followed the shooting, the police, the Brooklyn district attorney and the federal prosecutor's office scoured the underworld for sources. One informer alleged in 1994 that two corrupt detectives had killed Lino, but the investigation stalled."

"Eleven years of silence followed. Last week, however, the silence was broken with a stunning indictment as investigators announced what their colleagues could never have fathomed 13 years ago when they arrived at the scene of the blood-soaked car: that the men who murdered Lino were not Mafiosi but police." ...

"In the early days of America, so-called blue laws restricted many activities on Sunday. In recent years, however, state governments have recognized that the people's right to choose for themselves what they do, or don't do, on Sunday is more consistent with America's founding principals. Present day bans on Sunday hunting are the last holdouts of these blue laws, and hunters are questioning why they are being treated differently from their fellow citizens."

"The majority of hunters will agree that the biggest obstacle to hunting, and the biggest obstacle to recruiting new hunters, is lack of access and opportunity to hunt. By restricting Sunday hunting, states are not only limiting opportunities for today's hunters but are making it harder to recruit new hunters ..." ...

"The Florida Legislature is on the verge of approving a bill that could turn streets into free-fire zones, enabling people to pull out guns and blast away whenever they feel threatened."

"Lawmakers should get a grip. The state already has a reasonable self-defense law. People are allowed to use deadly force -- including guns -- if they fear their life is in imminent danger and see no way to safely avoid the threat. The "duty to retreat" from a potential attacker does not apply to a person inside his own home, defending against an unlawful intruder." ...
