Stance, balance, leverage: Granville teens learned these are all key to escaping and maintaining distance from a potential attacker.

Granville Public Library hosted a Teen Self Defense Class instructed by Jon Borrows of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu of Newark on March 12.

Borrows said in an interview prior to the class that he would be focusing the evening’s instruction on tactics for disengaging from an attacker, as well as maintaining distance from the other person threatening or trying to subdue them.

A woman who fatally shot a man on a shoulder of Interstate 5 during a road-rage incident last month will not be charged, the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday.

The 23-year-old woman acted in self defense, prosecutors said. The News Tribune has chosen not to publish her name because she was never arrested or charged with a crime.

Inspired by the most recent occurrence in an endless array of mass shootings – this one at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. — students across the United States recently walked out of their classrooms in a peaceful and organized protest against the status quo in regulation of firearms. Their courage has churned once more the national dialogue surrounding gun control. Much verbiage, some of it even longer than 140 characters, has already been spilt by politicians, parents, policy advisors, special interests, teachers and other concerned citizens.

As the Louisiana Legislature begins its 2018 Session, several overreaching gun control bills have been filed that infringe on your Second Amendment rights and your right to self-defense. The anti-gun legislation includes:

House Bill 277 /Senate Bill 274, sponsored by Rep. Denise Marcelle (D-61) and Sen. Troy Carter (D-7), respectively, prohibits the sale of commonly owned semi-automatic rifles to any person under 21 years of age. This legislation punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals, does nothing to increase public safety and will prohibit law-abiding 18-20 year old adults from purchasing the most popular and effective self-defense rifle on the market.

Gov. Matt Mead vetoed a controversial bill imposing tough penalties for interfering with "critical infrastructure" that some opponents said would stifle free speech rights.

But he opted to let a controversial "stand your ground" bill become law without his signature.

The Wyoming Senate voted Thursday to override the "critical infrastructure" veto, with only five senators voting against doing so after no discussion. But when the measure came to the House of Representatives, it was clear from lawmakers' comments that some still had concerns.

Until this week, I'd never heard of Nick Freitas, an Iraq war veteran and a Republican member of Virginia's House of Delegates. But several people have sent me the clip below of his floor speech from earlier this month, in which he strenuously defends the Second Amendment in the wake of the Parkland massacre. He also calls out the anti-gun Left over some of their policy preferences, and especially over their 'end of discussion'-style debating tactics -- which prevent the sort of "open and honest" debate lawmakers on both sides often claim to desire.

I often wonder what it means for us to be dependent on guns for safety, recreation and self-defense. Guns are made to wound and kill. They have no other purpose. I know from personal experience that shooting a gun is a rush like no other. I have family members who sleep with a gun in their bedside table, or under the mattress, ostensibly to protect themselves and family members from burglars, rapists, and other intruders. I’m willing to bet money that the ghostly image of that fearful intruder looks like somebody from a different and fearful race. A person I know keeps a gun in the back row of the church in case an unsavory person appears.

Gun safety, the Second Amendment and immigration were the hot topic issues at Congressman Andy Harris' town hall Friday in Berlin.

Harris, Maryland's 1st District congressman, walked into a room at Stephen Decatur Middle School and was met with applause from his supporters and some silence from others.

Harris stuck to his beliefs, saying the right to bear arms is protected by the Second Amendment, Ocean City should not be required to have a wind farm so close to its shore and reaffirmed his belief that marriage is between a man and a woman.

“Tube-sock solutions” (one size fits all) abound; “let’s raise the age limit to 21 to buy any firearm.” You can vote at 18, involuntarily serve in the military at 18, but not purchase a hunting rifle? Who would tell Lieutenant Audie Murphy, who by age 19 had won every combat decoration in WWII, including a battlefield officer’s commission and the Medal of Honor that upon his return home at age 20, would be told “sorry Murphy, you’re not old enough to be trusted with a gun.”

Let’s sort out a few facts, some of them unpleasant. The Second Amendment doesn’t exist to produce good target shooters and squirrel hunters.

The latest school shooting where 17 students were murdered in Parkland, Fla., has spurned an outpouring of student activism. This has included a symbolic 17 minute walk out and peaceful demonstrations around the country, seeking to call attention to the issue of gun violence. I have been disappointed to see that this youth activism has been met by so many voices choosing to dismiss their concerns or even question their motivations, rather than simply listening to their message.

DE: Radical Gun Control Legislation to be Heard in the House

On Tuesday, March 20, the Delaware House will consider anti-gun legislation, House Bill 330. Please contact your state Representative and strongly urge them to OPPOSE House Bill 330 when it comes up for a vote.

House Bill 330 would make it illegal for an adult aged 18 to 20 to purchase or transfer a rifle orrifle ammunition without first receiving permission from their parent or guardian. This legislation is outright offensive and demeaning to Delaware’s young adults who are otherwise allowed to vote, join the military, and exercise every other constitutionally guaranteed right. Anti-gun legislators are playing games with the right to self-defense of law-abiding Delaware gun owners.

While the nation debates guns in schools, Congress should approve going back to school on guns. It's time to learn more about the roots and pattens of gun violence in America.

That means repealing the Dickey Amendment. The 1996 provision technically bars the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from advocating for gun control, but its practical effect has been to stop the CDC and other federal agencies from conducting deep research into a major public health hazard.

Outside her mother’s Detroit home last summer, she pulled a gun on a neighbor, who Ra says used her vehicle to hit her car with Ra’s 2-year-old daughter inside, and then tried to “run over” her and her mother. The firearm was not discharged; in fact, Ra alleged the gun was not even loaded. Her attorneys argued that her actions were in self-defense. An appeal is underway.

Ra is a Concealed Pistol License holder. Her case—which centers on self-defense with a firearm in a Stand Your Ground state—is happening during a national debate over gun laws and the Second Amendment, which states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Because your child is constantly changing, gun safety at any age is an important discussion to have with your child’s doctor. On average, 19 children are shot every day in the U.S., either intentionally or unintentionally. Seven die. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has a goal to make these accidental injuries a thing of the past.

The AAP policy on gun safety recommends that there be no guns in a home where children live. 80 percent of gun injuries to children under 15 occur at home. Despite parents’ warnings, children just don’t realize how dangerous a gun can be.

If things were quieter these days — if gun massacres weren’t claiming the lives of children and adults in horrifying numbers — the fundraisers at a couple of Catholic churches in the Schuylkill County borough of Minersville might have passed without notice.

But the events included raffles in which the prizes were guns — in one case, an AR-15, the weapon used in the Feb. 14 Florida school massacre and a number of earlier mass shootings.

Emma González, a leader in the #NeverAgain movement sparked by the shooting at her school in Parkland, Florida, pointed out key flaws in President Donald Trump’s claim that arming teachers with guns could stop school shootings.

The activist called the idea of giving firearms to teachers in the classroom “stupid” during an interview with 60 Minutes that was released Friday, pointing to the financial burden of the program on an already underfunded education system and the logistical difficulties of giving teachers guns in self-defense.

After a mass killer murdered 17 helpless individuals at a Florida school despite those “Gun Free” signs – and the local sheriff’s department and the FBI were unable to prevent the carnage from occurring – Florida’s intimidated Republican Gov. Rick Scott blamed the gun and signed a bill increasing the minimum age to purchase semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21.

If 18 to 21 year olds in the U.S. are restricted from purchasing or using those firearms for hunting, recreational use or protection, then they should refuse to volunteer for the military.

CA: CRPA Publishes Research Piece: Did the Old West Really Have More Gun Control than We Do?

The California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) recently released a research article by Emmy® Award winning film producer and reporter, Dan Gifford, detailing the myths and facts of gun control in the 19th century American West – and comparing those myths and facts to today’s environment.

Gifford’s article asserts that the legend of gun control in the American West is a fictional story being used by gun-ban lobbyists in an attempt to falsely persuade the American public that restrictive gun laws date back to the Old West in the 19th century.
