The Michigan Senate responded Thursday to last month's deadly shooting at Michigan State University by approving bills that would expand background check requirements for firearm purchases and allow guns to be taken from those deemed a risk to themselves or others.
The main proposals in the 11-bill package, which also includes measures to require guns be secured if they are kept in homes where children are present, passed along party lines in votes of 20-17 with Democrats in support and Republicans in opposition.
GOP lawmakers contended the measures wouldn't prevent shootings but would infringe on constitutional rights. |

After a gunman killed three students last month at Michigan State University, the campus was quickly awash in cries for more gun control. It wasn’t long before the Rock, a campus monument long used by students as a free canvas for promoting school events and social issues, became a focal point of pro-gun control messaging.
But someone, thought to be a student, repainted the Rock with a fundamentally different message to state legislators and campus officials: “Allow us to defend ourselves and carry on campus.” |

The Washington Senate Law & Justice Committee is scheduled to vote next week on House Bill 1240 creating a state definition of “assault weapon,” which the Gun Owners of America, or GOA, says would apply to most firearms.
One of the reasons is due to the definition of assault weapons in the bill. Although the bill specifically lists 62 rifles by name "regardless of which company produced and manufactured the firearm," the ban also applies to any semi-automatic rifle with a barrel length less than 30 inches. The gun barrel is the section of a firearm between the action and the muzzle. |

In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that gun violence increased 35% as more than 45,000 people fell victim to gun deaths, meaning approximately 124 people died from firearm-related causes per day. Academic research suggests that if left untreated, gun violence is detrimental to the overall mental, emotional and neurological development of the most vulnerable population exposed to it—our children. |

A would-be robber was shot and killed by a concealed carry permit holder while he held the permit holder’s friend at gunpoint outside of a convenience store.
According to police, two friends were walking out of the store when a man followed. The suspect attempted to rob the pair by holding a gun to one of the men and demanding the other, who has a concealed carry permit, give up “everything he had.”
The man handed over his wallet, and the suspect patted him down, looking for other valuables. While being patted down at gunpoint, he drew his concealed carry gun from his right hip area and shot the suspect in the chest. |

Ever since the 2023 legislative session began earlier this year, the Teller County commissioners have sent a clear message to state political leaders: If any lawmakers chooses to go after guns or law enforcement, the county, along with other rural areas, will fight back with their weapons loaded.
In fact, Teller Commission Chairman Erik Stone has gained the nickname, “Mr. Teller,” as he has been spotted at the state Capitol fighting an invasion of bills that could impact our county and rural sections of Colorado. |

Prosecutors said a Muncie man had threatened and stalked members of a southside family before he was fatally shot outside their home.
Daniel Eugene Dunsmore, 56, died last Oct. 24 after he was shot in the 1900 block of West Memorial Drive.
Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman in recent days released a report on the homicide, and said he had determined the fatal shooting was "legally justifiable in that the shooter acted in self-defense."
Hoffman also said "no criminal charges will be filed and this investigation is now closed." |

Two years after Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee led the charge to allow residents 21 and older to carry handguns in public without a permit, younger adults could soon have the same privilege, with or without the governor's signoff.
A gun rights group sued after the law was passed in 2021, arguing that the age limit should be lower. Then late last year, the state's top lawyer moved to negotiate a settlement rather than defend the law, citing last year's U.S. Supreme Court ruling expanding gun rights. |

A Second Amendment advocacy group is calling on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to cancel his financial support of Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), arguing the Republican leader shouldn't funnel money to lawmakers who have backed "anti-gun" legislation.
Fitzpatrick was one of five Republicans to break with the majority of the GOP in June to vote with Democrats to approve gun control legislation that cracked down on the sale of semi-automatic firearms for people under 21 and established stricter regulatory frameworks for ghost guns without serial numbers. |

Yesterday, the Kentucky Senate gave final approval to a bill that would ban state and local enforcement of any federal gun control enacted or implemented after Jan. 1, 2021. This includes the new ATF rule on pistol braces. Passage into law would take a step toward ending some federal acts that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms within the state.
... The legislation would prohibit Kentucky law enforcement agencies, local governments, and public agencies from adopting a rule, order, ordinance, or policy under which the entity enforces, assists in the enforcement of, or otherwise cooperates in a “federal ban” on firearms, ammunition, or firearm accessory. |

Earlier this month, in United States v. Rahimi, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit struck down as unconstitutional a decades-old law barring people subject to domestic violence restraining orders from possessing firearms. The ruling comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen last term, which held that the Second Amendment protects the right to carry guns outside the home. |
