... "The end came following a bitter battle not only between pro- and anti-gun forces, but within the firearms rights community itself. Having been involved in the battle to the extent that I helped to coordinate Pennsylvania grassroots efforts with the efforts of similar groups in other states, one thing that I can say for certain is that the battle was not as reported by the mainstream media, the anti-gun forces, the NRA, or most of the 'establishment' gun-rights forces. My summary is that ultimately it was the independent, hard-core groups around the nation that took over and killed a bill that had become so bad that it needed killing." ... |

This is included here, more or less, to remind us all that some people are just plain whacko when it comes to their gun-related analogies:
. . . "This is a cougar, puma, mountain lion. Three different names, same animal. There're about 100 left in the wild. It lives in a sanctuary down in Jupiter. Someone had it as a pet before. Not a good idea. Wild animals are like a loaded gun: They can go off any moment." ...

"On February 11, 2004, Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, along with several other members of The Liberty Caucus, introduced the 'First Amendment Restoration Act' (H.R. 3801). This legislation would restore Americans' First Amendment rights by repealing sections of the McCain-Feingold law that forbid issue-advocacy groups, such as The Liberty Committee, Gun Owners of America, American Conservative Union, Concerned Women of America and the National Rifle Association, to inform their members about important issues and votes relative to incumbent candidates during the 30 and 60 days before primary and general elections."

Here is yet another in a long line of armed assault stories in "gun free Great Britain."
In this one, a construction worker was beaten and had a double-barreled shotgun shoved in his mouth, complete with threats to blow his head off.
Naturally, because he was a victim, the UK paper calls him "BRAVE," "gutsy," and a "hero."
In the disarmed UK, being a victim makes you all of these things, of course -- because to the bulk of British subjects, sucking shotgun, cowering and waiting to die is an amazing act of courage.
Here in America, we prefer dispatching violent predatory criminals -- or at least holding them for the police. Brits' choice to be "brave gutsy heroes" is their business. |

"The U.S. Supreme Court has become a political institution where nine lawyers using the 'enormously seductive living Constitution' have only helped to curb the liberties and freedoms guaranteed under it, Justice Antonin Scalia said Tuesday."
" 'The people have come to realize that we're not looking for good lawyers anymore,' Scalia said. 'That's what we used to do.' "
"Instead, he said, political views are paramount, with abortion the litmus test." |

"First, we should adopt a national ID card. Surprisingly, this is anathema to many conservatives. If the right is willing to imprison people indefinitely and send young people off to die in Iraq in the name of security, then why is it unthinkable to standardize driver's licenses into a national ID?"
Maybe because we are not subjects for the government to track. We are a free people.
"The other area where I'd like to see a tougher approach has to do with 'cookbooks' to make anthrax, sarin and other chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. Over the last few years, I've collected a horrifying set of booklets, typically sold at gun shows or on the Internet, detailing how to make mustard gas, VX, anthrax or 'home-brew nerve gas.' "
So apparently freedom of speech and the press is OK, as long as you aren't saying or writing anything that frightens statists? |

"I asked her why the paper would even want to do such an article as this. ..."
"I then asked her why they would want to publish the names or addresses of the holders. She gave a few different answers, public records, right to know, parents wanting to check if a household where their kids play has a gun, people who are dating wanting to know if their new boy/girlfriends pack heat, etc. However, I had a hard time actually getting her to explain what had motivated their paper to suggest this. I could barely wangle it out of her. Finally, she stated that this was intended to 'foment debate.' "

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787) |
