"Never before in a war zone has the United States relied so much on private citizens to perform military functions. Security firms such as DynCorp and Kroll, retained on State Department and Pentagon contracts worth billions of dollars, have sent thousands of civilian contractors to do the work that the undermanned U. S. military can't. Here, for the first time, the inside story of the private armies of Operation Iraqi Freedom." ...

"After a decade long effort, law-abiding citizens of Ohio now have the Right-to-Carry a firearm for protection of themselves and their loved ones. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is pleased to announce that Governor Taft has signed legislation recognizing law-abiding Ohioans' right to carry firearms. Ohio becomes the 37th state to enact such self-defense legislation."
" 'The Right-to-Carry is a proven crime deterrent and will benefit all law-abiding Ohioans,' said Chris Cox, NRA chief lobbyist. 'On behalf of NRA`s four million members, I would like to thank Governor Taft for signing Right-to-Carry into law. I would also like to recognize the support of Representative Jim Aslanides, the sponsor of the legislation, Speaker Larry Householder, Senate President Doug White and all who voted for this important self-defense right. As always, the grassroots activism by thousands of NRA members was fundamental in achieving victory.' " |

"Members of the Raisin Charter Township law enforcement team soon will have access to a pair of semiautomatic weapons following a unanimous vote by township trustees Monday night."
"Trustee Carl Wagner was absent. Two Bushmaster M-14 rifles will be purchased at $680 each for a total cost of $1,884.90, which includes accessories and ammunition. The money will come from a contingency fund."
" 'Unfortunately, it's a sign of the times - and not a good one,' said Larry Crittenden, Raisin Charter Township supervisor, who pointed out there already has been one incident in the township involving an assault rifle."

The recent News editorial on the gun law bill defeated in the Senate shows either bias or hopefully ignorance on the part of the editor. The buzz-words "assault rifle" were ever present. It would be interesting to this writer to have the editor define the words "assault rifle." It seems that if it is black and looks different, it must be so, and triggers this media knee-jerk description. The AR-15 mentioned in the editorial is a popular target rifle used by many clubs and sportsmen for competitive target shooting. It is really no different than millions of other rifles used for similar purposes. Perhaps an educational session with members of a local gun club would aid the editorial writers' accuracy. Incidentally, the National Rifle Association is the nation's oldest civil rights organization. |

"The Montana Human Rights Network (MHRN) has been keeping watch on right-wing extremist groups in Big Sky Country since its inception in 1990. Over that time, they've had ample opportunity to examine the relationships between groups that call themselves 'gun rights' organizations and those of broader and more controversial bents, like the Militia of Montana."
"Ken Toole, MHRN's program director, says that as time went on, he and his colleagues noticed a strong relationship between gun-rights groups like the Montana Shooting Sports Association and broader-interest hate groups. And then, he says, they noticed something else: The same people who attended the militia meetings to talk about the need for an armed citizenry also came to school-board meetings to talk about the need for a creationist science curriculum. They were the same people who came to land-use meetings to argue for local control, and for their right to bring snowmobiles into Yellowstone Park."
"Toole says that MHRN began to notice the critical importance that 'gun rights' advocates played in a much broader scope. 'Gun rights' is just one piece of it,' he says, 'but it is the most politically inoculated piece, and I think that's why Montana has drifted so dramatically to the right.' "
----- Translation: We don't like gun rights groups, so we will spew any kind of misleading information possible to lump them in with hate groups and extremists. |

"There are good reasons to carry a gun concealed. It prevents you from having to answer numerous questions from nervous policemen and security guards. Bank tellers feel more comfortable when waiting on you. You avoid upsetting people who may not understand why you want to carry a gun. On the whole, you are showing that you are sensitive to the feelings of those around you. The mark of a gentle person (that is someone with breeding and manners) is that they never intentionally cause distress to others."
"As laws expanding the right to carry concealed guns become more popular, anti-gun newspapers sometimes threaten to 'expose,' by publication, the names of people with gun licenses. 'Exposing' people who have been investigated and found to be model citizens would hardly seem newsworthy. Obviously such newspapers are appealing to people's prejudice on slow news days. Publishing a list of gunowners is the equivalent of a newspaper headline stating, 'Corruption in Mayor's Office not found.' " |

A nine-year-old boy managed to steal a gun from a shop in Sandnes, western Norway. He then took it to school and proudly showed it off to his friends.
The friends in turn told a teacher at the local school, who took the gun away from the boy. School officials then called the police, according to newspaper Dagbladet.
It remains unclear how the boy stole the gun, a Czech pistol.
The proprietor of the shop from which the gun originated claims the boy stole the keys to the weapons cabinet and unlocked it himself. The boy said he was allowed to hold the gun, and then gave in to the temptation to put it in his pocket.
Police aren't pursuing the case, since the boy didn't use the gun to threaten anyone. The boy reportedly understands that he wasn't wise to steal weapons.

" 'It is very critical for children to learn that weapons are lethal,' said the Lynnwood man. 'When the projectile leaves the muzzle, there is no 'I'm sorry.' ... Accident or intentional, dead is dead.' " |

"Wednesday's arrest in the highway-shooting case has given fresh ammunition to gun-control advocates who say Ohio does a lousy job of keeping mentally ill people from buying guns."
"Licensed gun sellers nationwide are required to make instant background checks through an FBI database to identify potentially dangerous buyers."
"When a judge has ruled a person mentally ill, he or she cannot be sold firearms. But those background checks don't have much effect in Ohio because the state hasn't updated the federal database with the names of people deemed mentally ill by judges." |

"When domestic violence escalates to homicide, a gun is the weapon of choice. So it's logical to attempt to literally disarm a potentially dangerous situation."
"Possession of a firearm is illegal under state law for someone convicted of certain domestic violence crimes -- including violation of a no-contact order -- and under federal law for someone under a no-contact order. But a story by Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter Hector Castro shows that such laws often go unenforced."
"We commend the King County's Sheriff's Office and district court judges for cooperating on a system to remove the firearms catalyst from explosive domestic situations." |

"Fighting the terrorism that brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center unified the state Capitol in shock, grief and resolve in the months following Sept. 11, 2001."
"But the continued attempts by the Republican Senate and Republican Gov. George Pataki to get a package of anti-terrorism bills through the Democratic Assembly has turned an issue that once bound state leaders into one that is creating resentment and ill will."
"The 16-bill package includes measures to liberalize wiretaps for cell phone conversations, eliminate the statute of limitations for terrorism and create several new categories of crimes committed in furtherance of terrorist aims." ...
"Silver countered with a tough-on-crime package of his own by having the Assembly approve seven bills this week designed to reduce improper access to guns. "
"Among them was a measure to ban .50-caliber firearms in the state. Silver said they are of little or no use to hunters, 'Unless you're in the armed forces, there is no compelling need for anyone to own a .50-caliber weapon,' Silver said."
------- And since when do Americans need to justify their need to petty tyrants in three-piece suits just to be able to freely exercise their constitutional rights?

"The Tomstown Scandal refers to a series of grand jury investigations and lawsuits – and propaganda barrages and mudslinging – spawned during the execution of the Toms' strategy of conquest. The two main groups whose activities are under scrutiny are the Texas Association of Business, a pro-GOP group with connections to both Toms, and the Texans for a Republican Majority political action committee, created by DeLay to secure GOP control of the Texas Legislature. Both groups are accused of violating Texas election law during the 2002 state elections – into which TAB and TRMPAC poured around $4.5 million – and during Craddick's subsequent campaign to become speaker of the house." ...
"In addition to the two Toms, major players in the Tomstown Scandal include:"
"Bill Hammond, president of the Texas Association of Business and a former Republican House member." ...
"Jim Ellis, aide to Tom DeLay ..."
"John Colyandro, director of TRMPAC and the Texas Conservative Coalition, former political consultant to Attorney General Greg Abbott, and before that an associate of Karl Rove." ...
"The Law Enforcement Alliance of America, a Virginia-based anti-gun-control group recruited by Colyandro and TRMPAC to contribute a $1.5 million late-hit TV campaign against Abbott's opponent Kirk Watson, Austin's former mayor, in the 2002 AG race." |

"Like any new law, Ohio’s concealed-carry handgun law remains open to interpretation, and one of the gray areas in House Bill 12 may be the ability of cities to prevent permit holders from carrying weapons in parks and similar areas."
"However, for now it appears the Salem Parks Department will not be able to ban handgun carriers from bringing their weapons into the city’s parks."
"Following his presentation on the new handgun law at a Salem Area Chamber of Commerce business luncheon Monday, Timothy A. Dimoff of SACS Consulting and Investigative Services said the parks department, like private business, would be able to ban weapons from parks property by establishing a policy to that effect and clearly posting notices of the ban."
"Since then, advocates of the concealed-carry law have pointed out Section 9 of House Bill 12, designed, among other things, to create uniformity throughout the state regarding 'the authority granted' to licensed handgun carriers." |

Unfortunately for those desiring permits, this is not the case."

"Ask yourselves how this gracious reception of our grievances matches up with those warlike preparations which fill so many federal bureaucracies and the growing police state which covers our land. By denying liberties for thousands of Americans, by moving our nation toward a police state and rattling sabers throughout the world, we proved them right. We legitimized them by claiming we were at war with them. They don’t deserve the designation of enemy combatants. They are criminals and should be treated as such."

"A proposed ordinance before the Papillion Nebraska City Council that would ban the use and transportation of intact paintball guns within the city was met with little public comment Tuesday night."

"The ordinance would also define air gun, sling shot and paintball devices as firearms." |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. — Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962 |
