American conservatives’ peculiar attachment to Second Amendment absolutism and what can only be described as a religion of gun ownership isn’t only manifested in stubborn opposition to the mildest forms of free-standing firearm-safety legislation, it also pops up on other issues where compelling interests collide with the cult of the gun. That includes the supposedly bipartisan and cross-ideological cause of domestic-violence prevention. |

Republicans in the Iowa Legislature are again rewriting the state's gun laws with a bill that would allow people to buy guns and carry a concealed handgun without first obtaining a state permit.
The bill that passed the House Wednesday, with all Republican votes and one Democrat, would eliminate current state permit requirements which carry with them background checks to ensure the person obtaining or carrying a gun isn't disqualified from ownership due to past felonies or abuses. |

Former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra was confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services by a 50-49 vote Thursday.
Becerra’s tenure as the California attorney general was rife with anti-Second Amendment actions, as he spent years defending California’s overly burdensome gun-control laws in the courts, including the state’s arbitrary ban on standard-capacity magazines and some of the worst “red-flag” gun-confiscation laws in the nation. |

SB-498 Church Carry by Sen. Joe Gruters and HB-259 Church Carry by Rep. Jayer Williamson & Rep. Cord Byrd have collectively been heard in five different Legislative Committee hearings in the Florida Senate and Florida House.
In every hearing, these bills have been met with a barrage of anti-church-carry questions and debate by Democrat members of these committees.
Why Democrats don't want religious institutions to be able to make their own decisions about their private property and about protecting their own houses of worship and worshipers, is a question that defies a logical answer. |

Multiple pro-self-defense bills are advancing through the Senate, and your Senator needs to hear from you! Please contact your State Senator and ask them to Support House Bill 116 and Senate File 67.
House Bill 116 expands Wyoming’s permitless carry law, which has been in effect since 2011, to all law-abiding adults, not just Wyoming residents who have resided in the state for at least six months. This ensures that visitors and new residents have their right to self-defense without government red tape or delays. |

The Vermont Senate approved legislation Thursday that would ban guns from Vermont hospitals and set up a legislative study of whether to prohibit firearms from the Capitol Complex in Montpelier.
On the virtual Senate floor Thursday, the proposal was split into two votes — one on banning guns in hospitals and the other on the legislative study. Senators voted 20-9 in favor of prohibiting guns in hospitals and 19-10 for the proposed study.
The bill is expected to be given final approval Friday, then be sent to the House of Representatives. |

House Bill 2543, sponsored by Representative Lisa Reynolds (D-36), allows for the indefinite delay of firearm transfers. Current law allows a licensed firearm dealer (FFL) to release a firearm to a purchaser the following business day, if they have not received any additional correspondence from the Department of State Police after receiving a “delay” when conducting the initial background check for a firearm transfer. This safeguard prevents the potential shutdown of sales via endless delays, and allows law-abiding individuals to take possession of a firearm in a timely manner. HB 2543 removes this safeguard, potentially creating a limitless delay on the exercise of a fundamental right. |

The killings in “Atlanta” didn’t start in Atlanta but began on the dividing line between two relatively small towns in southern Cherokee County, GA, Acworth, and Woodstock. I know the area well.
How?
I live 5 minutes from that intersection. I shopped in the Woodstock Market, The Woodstock Antique and Consignment Shops, and the Woodstock Furniture Outlet, within eyesight of the Asian Spa where the killings occurred, as late as last weekend as I searched for unique items for the newly constructed AAR Studios. I passed the spa and another one nearby on the other side of the auto repair shop that separates them. You get the idea, but it gets worse. |

With a 149% increase in the number of hate crimes against Asian Americans recorded in 2020, members of the community are buying guns for personal protection.
“There are more Asians being introduced to firearms,” Jimmy Gong, the owner of Jimmy’s Sport Shop in New York, told Forbes. “Before, there was never gun culture in the Asian community. But after the pandemic and all the hate crime going on, there are more Asians buying guns to defend themselves.” |

If there is one thing my long-suffering editor really likes in my columns, it is when I manage to irritate just about every reader, while not coming up with any real answers or solutions (Ed: um, no, that’s not what I said). And so today, I thought I would offer a few thoughts on a very interesting Colorado Politics story that recently appeared, wherein there is some rather dramatic differences of opinion — guns and gun laws. |

I want to applaud U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik’s new Second Amendment Guarantee Act.
Elise has always been a proud support of the Second Amendment, and I know she will continue to be a champion of our right to bear arms. I encourage all my fellow 2A supporters to look into Elise’s effort! Not only would the Second Amendment Guarantee void New York’s SAFE Act, but it would also prevent future states from attempting to restrict responsible gun ownership. Elise has proven again and again that she will stand for the North Country’s rights and the constitution! |
