Amnesty danger to gun rights conspicuously absent from LaPierre CPAC speech

... "LaPierre talked about threats from Russia and the Islamic State. He talked about the economy and the debt. He talked about pressures not to speak out and the loss of privacy to 'Big Brother.' He talked about freedom of speech and freedom of religion. He talked about hackers and identity thieves. He talked about tracking license plates, online health histories, economic fraud, Brian Williams and the untrustworthy media. He talked about a 'weaponized IRS' and 'politicians ... pushing nanny state social schemes.'"

"... But he didn't say a thing about the electoral polar shift that will take place when the 'earned citizenship' plans of Sec. Johnson, who, incidentally, was confirmed by no shortage of Republican A-raters, become a reality." ...

“The history of gun control is one of a constant shift in focus, CPAC attendees learned at a breakout session on Saturday. Anti-gun advocates have moved from a steady push to cancel the Second Amendment on the federal level, to shifting to state level campaigns, and in some cases they are winning because of the left’s ability to buy the press.”

“The session, lead by the NRA’s Leslie Rusnak, traced the basic historical timeline of efforts to curb our Second Amendment rights. Noting that the National Rifle Association started in 1871 to help train Americans in the use of firearms, Rusnak pointed out how remarkable it is that there was no such thing as an anti-gun group in the US until the 1930s. ..." ...

… “These figures pale into insignificance when compared with the 35,000 or so Americans killed every year in gun-related incidents. With monotonous regularity, there are incidents involving some nut with a real or imagined grievance who goes on a shooting spree. And often, there are tragedies involving toddlers ...”

“No politician dares take on the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) to make it more difficult for Americans to get their hands on firearms that range from hunting shotguns to the most lethal automatic weapons.”

“Americans have become so accustomed to this daily mayhem that they think it is normal for gun-toting citizens to parade around their streets. Gun clubs teach children how to use sub-machine guns ...” ...

"As I read the letter, 'Second Amendment includes no exception,' I thought my thinking was original when I started to research the weapons of the time and what prompted the wording of the Second Amendment. How wrong I was!"

"There is so much available on this subject that I am embarrassed to confess that at 9 years of age I was a student of constitutional law specializing in the First and Second Amendments."

"I went to class every Saturday at the local theater where I, and my fellow students saw, demonstrated in black and white, the wisdom and logic used in framing the Constitution."

Second Amendment’s militia clause misunderstood

"Clearly, John Skoufis isn’t ignorant, so I assume it was his intent to deliberately misinform your readers about my recent letter ('We all have a right to bear arms,' Feb. 26). Applying the Second Amendment 'exclusively' to a militia is his wording, not mine. I simply suggested using all the words."

"Curiously, so-called defenders of the Second Amendment never include the opening clause in their letters. How can the 'well regulated militia' clause be 'properly read' if it’s never written?" ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Maybe because that clause is incidental to the right protected by the Second Amendment? I know, let's ask the Supreme Court's Heller dissenters: Surely it protects a right that can be enforced by individuals. But a conclusion that the Second Amendment protects an individual right does not tell us anything about the scope of that right.

"Our Legislature is now looking at passing a bill that allows individuals to carry concealed firearms without a permit, commonly referred to as 'constitutional carry.' I fully support the Second Amendment and the constitutional right to bear arms however, 'concealed' carry without training or background checks could weaken Second Amendment Rights and is a recipe for disaster!"

"I am a 22-year military veteran, and a lifetime NRA member. I agree with the West Virginia Sheriff's Association opposition to this bill. ... "As an avid competition shooter and hunter, I find the proposal to ban AR-15/223-556 ammo to be absurd. I find this to be solely political in nature. The only reason I see this is being done is to eventually take all Second Amendment rights in the future. Let's face it: no ammo, no guns. This also forces law-abiding gun owners to incur exorbitant prices for ammo in the future if import ammo is banned. It also opens the doors for price gouging in the market, which this administration seems to find an acceptable alternative. The little guy gets shafted again." ...

"For the edification of people who don’t understand, or are deliberately misled, a 'crime gun' is generically defined as any firearm involved in some kind of crime. It may be stolen property (a crime), it may be recovered at a crime scene, or found in a raid like the one described in the KIRO story. It may be found lying in the street, or hidden in shrubbery. It does not necessarily have to be used in a crime." ...
