Alexandria's Bosek juggles responsibilities back home to compete on world stage

Alexandrias Kaisa Bosek was not long into her biathlon career in 2016 when she and her family casually talked about where the sport could potentially take her.

Kaisa was just a seventh-grader back then. She was interested in seeing exactly how much she would like the sport, which tests an athletes speed on cross-country skis and marksmanship on a shooting range, and not necessarily focused on competing on a world stage, but the family was aware of those opportunities being out there if she worked at it.

"I'd like to just keep going right now and see where I end up," she said in an interview with the Echo Press in March of 2016.

Four years later, Kaisa has ended up among some of the best young biathletes in the United States.

One thing Lucas Kozeniesky loves about the sport of shooting is that anyone of any size or background can pick it up. Theres no physical or genetic thing that makes you better at pulling a trigger or pointing a gun, he says.

That may be true, but for Kozeniesky himself, years of training and dedication to the sport have led him to a pinnacle few athletes ever reach qualification for his second Olympic Games.

Eleven years after first learning the sport at a Northern Virginia high school, Kozeniesky hopes to be gunning for gold later this year at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo.

Amid COVID-19 virus fears, guns and ammunition are selling like toilet paper.

Firearm and ammo sales typically spike during emergencies and after mass shootings, when calls for stricter gun laws ramp up, but Metro Detroit gun store owners say the current demand is unprecedented.

Driving the frenzy are concerns that criminals will take advantage of relaxed police enforcement of low-level misdemeanors, that people will become violent if forcibly quarantined, and that gun sales will be banned, vendors and customers say.

William Kucyk, owner of Action Impact Firearm Range and Training Center in Southfield and Eastpointe, said he's scrambling to keep up with the rush of new customers.

Firearm and ammunition sales have increased dramatically in Connecticut and across the nation since the coronavirus health crisis emerged. At the Cabelas store in East Hartford, business was brisk Friday afternoon. The firearms department had the most activity and staff. And some shelves had been cleared of ammunition.

In 1983, Dennis Tueller, a police officer, published an article discussing the need to defend against an attacker armed with a knife or blunt weapon. Through his tests and studies he determined that a person would be in danger if the attacker came at him from 21' or less.

A top gun-rights group is challenging the state-ordered shutdown of "non-essential" businesses because of the coronavirus outbreak, and leading Second Amendment advocates say more could be in store.

Brandon Combs, president of the Firearms Policy Coalition, said his group filed a case on Friday asking the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to block Democratic governor Tom Wolf from including gun stores in a statewide shutdown of "non-essential" businesses. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has told Gov. Wolf he has until 8 p.m. on Friday to respond to the arguments in the case.

While people are stocking up on everyday essentials such as hand sanitizer, food and toilet paper during the coronavirus outbreak, a growing number of Americans are seeking out another hot commodity guns and ammunition.

Its been normal until probably about the last five or six days, said Ethan Frontz, partner/instructor at Instruments of Freedom Tactical Weapons Training Group (IOF-TWTG) in Wooster. Obviously, once people heard that there may be possible things shut down on behalf of the government, they were starting to come in and purchase. I dont have any hard numbers, but there has definitely been a spike in sales in guns and ammo.

The Montgomery County District Attorneys Office has ruled that two separate fatal shootings from last month are justified as self-defense.

Robert Pollack, 55, was shot and killed in Collegeville on Feb. 16, after he kicked in a door of a home on East Third Avenue and pointed his gun at two people in the house.

Twelve days later, 28-year-old Alan Womack was shot and killed in the parking lot of an LA Fitness in King of Prussia.

So many Americans are flocking to local gun stores to stock up on firearms and ammunition in the face of the novel coronavirus that dealers say they are scrambling to keep up with demand. The surge is also causing delays in FBI background checks, forcing gun owners and first-time buyers alike to wait for their purchases to be approved. In the worst affected areas, the normally instantaneous checks could begin to take weeks.

When a pair of men ventured into the Nevada desert in March 2012 to do some exploring, their vehicle became stuck. There was no cell-phone service, and after five days, the 75-year-old man set out in search of help. The 76-year-old diabetic who remained with the vehicle was rescued 10 days after the ordeal began. His friend's remains were recovered 1.5 miles from the vehicle.

Gun and ammo sales are soaring in Oklahoma and around the country amid fears and worry about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Guns are selling in a way not seen since the days following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut in 2012.

Ammo sales and gun sales are off the charts, said Mike Rust, general manager of H&H Shooting Sports in Oklahoma City. It started about Friday, but we got seriously slammed on Saturday. We did as much sales on Monday as we did on that Saturday. And thats a lot. Its a whole lot.
