Slim, compact semi-automatic pistols are deeply embedded in the corporate DNA of Smith & Wesson. The company’s very first semi-auto handgun was a single-stack .35-caliber pocket pistol in the early 20th century, and when it returned to the semi-auto market in the 1950s, it was with the classic single-stack Model 39 in 9 mm. Some of the last of the traditional, hammer-fired, metal-frame, double-action variants in the catalog were the “Chiefs Special” line of chopped-down single-stack pistols optimized for concealed carry. |

Is Hollywood indoctrinating audiences to view guns as dangerous? At times, some would say that it seems that way. Recently, attention has been drawn to the Entertainment Industries Council (EIC), a non-profit organization with the mission of providing “information, awareness and understanding of major health and social issues” among the entertainment industries and to audiences. The organization’s stated goal is the accurate depiction of these issues in Hollywood and beyond, and it bills itself as a resource to writers, directors, and producers. However, the organization recently earned the ire of some gun rights advocates after The Daily Caller pointed out that EIC offers a list of firearm “depiction suggestions” on its website. |

A federal appeals court on Tuesday ruled against a group of Colorado sheriffs and other organizations that challenged the constitutionality of state gun laws, finding that the plaintiffs hadn't shown they were sufficiently harmed by the restrictions to bring a lawsuit. The ruling means that two controversial laws passed in 2013 — one that expanded background checks on firearms purchases and another that limited the capacity of ammunition magazines — remain in effect. |

Gun manufacturers have enjoyed unprecedented growth throughout Barack Obama's presidency. Since 2008, the share price of major gun manufacturers like Smith & Wesson (NASDAQ:SWHC) and Ruger (NYSE:RGR) has grown over 900%. In 2016 alone, Smith & Wesson and Ruger have experienced growth of 33.03% and 27.36% respectively. The gun boom is very much alive, and investors can look towards sustained growth over the next four years if polling data and national trends are any indication. |

As the General Assembly moves to create an independent police commission, key lawmakers say one of its first priorities should be to develop a statewide policy on how officers use stun guns across Maryland. The commission's mandate would be to adopt "use of force" policies recommended by the U.S. Department of Justice, under bipartisan legislation approved by the House of Delegates and being considered in the Senate. Those policies would cover how and when officers should resort to using a stun gun on suspects. |

Smartphones are locked with a pass code, and some with a fingerprint sensor. But guns, left loaded and ready to fire, can be used by children who accidentally stumble upon them or thieves who steal them. Wouldn’t using “smart guns” — firearms that don’t work without electronic confirmation of ownership — make communities safer?

A graduate student, upset that he had not received a coveted honor, walked into a university building and shot and killed the three professors on his dissertation committee. The shooting sparked weeks of protest. The department disputes that, and the police union says Clark reached for an officer’s gun during a struggle. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. — Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
