"Those stirring up the mob are taking full advantage of anger, and it’s hard not to think of the death of the Florida teen as an opportunity for their self-promotion, as opposed to a sincere concern for color-blind justice."

Three pro-gun reforms made took major steps towards passage this week. House Bill 4901, introduced by state Representative Michael Unes (R-91), passed in the House on March 21, by an overwhelming 96 to 7 vote. This legislation would allow any law-abiding resident of Illinois who has a valid Curios and Relics License issued by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to possess a rifle with a barrel less than 16 inches in length. The Senate companion to HB 4901, Senate Bill 2539, passed yesterday in the Senate by a 50 to 0 vote. SB 2539 was introduced by state Senator William Haine (D-56).

FL: Can Cops Arrest George Zimmerman for Murder in Trayvon Martin Case?

To arrest someone for a crime, the police need probable cause to believe that he committed the crime. But what if it’s clear that the person committed the act (e.g., intentionally killed someone), but it seems likely that he has a good affirmative defense (e.g., self-defense)? My view is that probable cause should be probable cause to believe that the conduct was indeed criminal, and if the self-defense case is strong enough, that negates probable cause to believe that a crime (as opposed to a justifiable homicide) was committed. But when I looked into this several years ago, I saw that the few courts that had discussed the matter were split.

"SALT LAKE CITY -- Gun lovers aren't satisfied and state public safety administrators are skeptical over a new analysis that ranks Utah as the second-most armed state in the nation.

The report from The Daily Beast places the Beehive State only behind Kentucky among the most armed."

FL: Can Trayvon Martin's Death Alter Our Race and Gun Cultures?

On a number of levels, it makes sense that Florida is the site of the Trayvon Martin tragedy that's riveting the nation. Florida purports to be our new multi-racial, multi-ethnic social model, a showcase of early 21st-century America; yet the case of Martin's fatal February shooting, which emits at least a strong odor of anti-black bias, seems to point up just how lodged in the early-20th century South much of the state can still be.

SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: The massive media attention being paid to this incident has at least two goals: the repeal of Florida's "stand your ground" law; and convincing the African-American population that they are under attack so Obama can count on them as a voting bloc to help reelect him.

Citizen journalist Mike Vanderboegh, who first broke the Fast and Furious scandal story in December 2010, is reporting this afternoon that a source inside the Justice Department has leaked a series of documents to Congressional officials who are investigating the scandal.

The leak would be a major break in the case and would fuel an escalation in the investigation into the scandal in which the Obama Administration placed U.S. guns directly into the hands of Mexican criminals in order to make a case for new gun control laws.

It's important to mention facts about this case, not to blame Trayvon in any way, but to show how we are all being played by the media.
The media went with the meme that a white guy had shot Trayvon. That was untrue. He was Hispanic. ...
The media also chose to only show younger sweeter pictures of Trayvon instead of reporting that he was. 6'2". While they did report an expunged arrest of George Zimmerman, they did not report that Trayvon had been at the apartments because he had been suspended from school [in Miami, over 250 miles away] for five days.

SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: "Rule one: Never allow a crisis to go to waste," Rahm Emanuel said in an interview with The New York Times.

FL: Trayvon Martin's Death Puts Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' Law Under New Scrutiny

Police in Sanford, Fla., have become the target of anger and protest around the country for failing to arrest George Zimmerman after he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
But Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law may have given them little choice.
That law grants immunity to anyone who uses deadly force, inside or outside his home, if he can reasonably claim he was defending himself.

SUBMITTER'S COMMENT: You are being manipulated by the use of the photo of a younger, cuter Trayvon Martin instead of one showing the six-foot-two football player he is now.
Purpose of this article: repeal "stand your ground" in Florida.

The Andover Fire Department Sportsman/Gun Show had a little bit of something for everybody Saturday. The event, now in its fifth year, features everything from a “Trophy Room” of some of the region’s most impressive deer mounts to a visit from rehabilitated birds of prey. “It’s going really well,” Andover Fire Chief Dennis Givens said several hours into the first day of the weekend-long event. “It’s been a steady crowd coming through. The vendors are really good this year. I’m very pleased with the vendors. We have a very good turnout of quality vendors, and that’s one of the main things we’re trying to do.”

Larry Pratt, the executive director of Second Amendment group Gun Owners of America, defended George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin, saying Zimmerman was acting in self defense when he shot the Florida teen. Appearing on Current TV’s “The Young Turks” with Cenk Uygur on Friday (video below), Pratt said Zimmerman and the police acted properly: “Martin passed from becoming a victim to becoming an aggressor. [Martin] should have run away."

The state Assembly Committee on Public Safety is expected to hear two anti-gun bills this Tuesday, March 27 at the State Capitol in room 126 at 9:00 a.m. Assembly Bill 1527, introduced by anti-gun state Assembly Member Anthony Portantino (D-44), would expand on last year’s ban on open carrying of an unloaded handgun to also include unloaded rifles and shotguns.

Kazakhstan has called the playing of a spoof of its national anthem at an international sporting event “a scandal” and demanded an investigation of the incident.

Maria Dmitrienko won a gold medal for Kazakhstan on Thursday at the Arab Shooting Championships in Kuwait, but during the award ceremony the public address system broadcast the spoof anthem from the 2006 movie “Borat,” which offended many Kazakhs by portraying the country as backward and degenerate.

An alleged eyewitness is backing the 28-year-old gunman at the center of a national firestorm.

A person named “John” told a Fox affiliate in Orlando that he saw an altercation unfold between George Zimmerman and 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, whom he shot and killed on Feb. 26.

Police said Zimmerman called 911 and described Martin as “suspicious.” The two scuffled, and Trayvon wound up dead from a single bullet from Zimmerman’s licensed 9mm semiautomatic, authorities say.

“The guy on the bottom, who I believe had a red sweater on, was yelling to me, ‘Help, help.’ I told him to stop, I was calling 911,” John told the TV station. Zimmerman was wearing red.

A "stand your ground" bill - not unlike one at the heart of the politically and emotionally charged Florida killing of Trayvon Martin - has been proposed for Massachusetts by a Franklin County legislator.

At the same time, at least one fellow legislator, Sen. Stanley Rosenberg, D-Amherst, said Friday he is inclined to vote against such a bill, especially given the political foment caused by the "stand your ground" shooting in Florida.

The bill, filed in February by Sen. Stephen Brewer, a Democrat who represents several Franklin County towns, would allow people to defend themselves in public by using guns, knives, baseball bats or other deadly force if they feel threatened or think someone else is endangered.

The authors of House Bill 2988, stress that self defense applies to places of worship as much as it does for citizens in their homes under the current law. But one local Chaplin says it's a self choice.

"Should a pastor carry a weapon in church? I don't think so," says Tulsa Police Chaplain, Alan McIntyre.

McIntyre, is a Chaplain for Tulsa Police Department and a retired minister. He has been working with the police department for several years and says he understands the right to protect yourself but says that you have to be educated as well.

The wake of Trayvon Martin’s shooting is not reaching the shores of public sentiment alone.

It’s extending to the State House, too, and with support from organized labor.

Last week state Rep. Bakari Sellers (D-Denmark) introduced a bill to remove the “stand your ground” modification, enacted in 2006, to South Carolina’s “Protection of Persons and Property Act.”

Zimmerman's parents, in a letter to a local newspaper, insisted their son is not a racist, and several black residents of the neighborhood where Martin was shot have only good things to say about Zimmerman. Zimmerman has not been charged with any crime and is claiming self-defense under Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which eliminated a person's duty to retreat when threatened with serious bodily harm or death. He claims Martin attacked him as he was walking back to his truck, according to police.

...

Martin's parents and hundreds of supporters said Zimmerman should have been immediately arrested and charged with the youth's killing, but local police said they have little evidence to disprove his self-defense claim.
