"This business has always been a fear-driven business," said Joel Fulton, owner of Freedom Firearms at 539 Capital Ave. S.W. "I don't like it. I want people to buy things for the right reasons, to be proactive because they have the right to self defense and they should be able to protect their home."
But Fulton said Tuesday that sales at his store have spiked because of the coronavirus and the supply disruptions and closures announced by the government.
"The anticipation is that the potential is there for anarchy and I don't want to be caught in that and if I am caught in that I want to be able to protect myself," Fulton said.

Philip Sheridan grabs a big black shotgun off the wall of his gun shop in Saginaw Township. You can hear the muffled sound of gunfire coming from the nearby range.
It’s a $1,349 Tavor 15-round shotgun, the 20-year owner of Sheridan Arms says, good for home defense.
While the gun shops across Michigan fell silent Tuesday following Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home order that closed “non-essential” businesses through April 13, they were bustling last week.
Sheridan Arms stayed open late Monday to make last-minute sales prior to the order taking effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.

Firearms and ammunition often used for self-defense are flying off the shelves of Montana sporting goods and firearm stores, as well as similar retailers across the nation.
“It’s just political and governmental uncertainty, that’s what it’s about,” said Gary Marbut, of the Montana Shooting Sports Association.
Some of Matt Zimmerman’s customers at Butt’s Gun Sales in the Billings Heights are first-time buyers alarmed by the new coronavirus outbreak and looking to protect themselves against possible looters, he said. |

State governors across the country have issued orders mandating the closure of all businesses not deemed essential or “life-sustaining” in response to the growing China Virus pandemic. Unfortunately, several states have included firearms retailers in their list of “nonessential” stores, effectively limiting their residents’ access to their Second Amendment rights. |

An Athens gun store owner is suing the Athens-Clarke County government over its emergency shelter-in-place ordinance, calling it “an abuse of police power.”
Lawyers for Clyde Armory owner Andrew Clyde say the ordinance violates the U.S. and state constitutions.
“There is no rational basis that requires gun stores to cease their business operations,” argue lawyers Mo Wiltshire and Kevin Epps in their brief on behalf of Clyde, filed Tuesday in Athens-Clarke County Superior Court. |

As of March 2020, we have found 20 more handgun cases, for a total of 93 cases, with three failures, for a success rate of 97%.
In addition to the handgun defenses, there are four more instances where handguns were used in combination with long guns, bringing the total to eight; one where a pistol was used on an aggressive bear hit by a vehicle, two examples where pistols were present but not used, one indeterminate case, and two examples of unconfirmed incidents. All of these additional incidents are referenced but are not included in the 93 cases or the 97% success rate. |

In this very critical time, with all of us concerned about the spread of a potentially deadly virus among our population, the time is ripe for possible public disorder, and the rights of our citizens to provide for their own self-defense is even more important now than in more tranquil times.
Among the reasons I believe that our state has a very low violent crime rate is that so many of our citizens are gun owners. And many of our senior citizens, myself among them, take comfort from the fact that they are well-trained firearm owners. |

On March 23rd, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued Executive Order No. 2020-21 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which includes a requirement to suspend activities that are not “necessary to sustain or protect life.” Her order failed to mention anything specific regarding firearm manufacturers or retailers. For now, gun stores in Michigan are open and operational. During this time of uncertainty, it is critical that law-abiding citizens remain able to access their Second Amendment right to self-defense. |

California Gov. Gavin Newsom will not offer official guidance on whether gun stores can be classified as essential businesses and remain open during the state's shelter-in-place order.
Newsom was asked about the issue after Los Angeles County reversed course on a move to close gun stores amid the spread of coronavirus in the region and the county's shelter-in-place order. L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva initially ordered the closing of gun stores, but legal counsel for the county determined gun stores are essential businesses and must remain open. Villanueva then rescinded the order. |

As COVID-19 continues to spread and Americans continue to purchase firearms for self-defense, the FBI will need to maintain the National Instant Check System (NICS). Current wait times are already higher than ever before as unprecedented numbers of purchases have flooded the system. With no clear end in sight, Gun Owners of America has sent a letter to the FBI, urging them to maintain the system so Americans can exercise their 2nd Amendment right and defend themselves and their loved ones. |

Nothing is more important than protecting ourselves and our families -- especially during these times of uncertainty. Yet, some anti-gun lawmakers are exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to deny you and your loved ones your fundamental right to self-defense and your Second Amendment rights.
These anti-gun and anti-self defense extremists deem gun stores "non-essential," they shut down issuance of firearm permits, and, in some locations, they have created extreme delays for background checks required for firearm transfers. Some jurisdictions have even put added restrictions on firearm transfers, making it all but impossible for many law-abiding Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights. |

The National Rifle Association (NRA) notes that coronavirus shutdowns resulting in the closure of gun stores in various states demonstrate that gun controls the left once pushed as “reasonable” have become anything but.
The Democrats’ pet gun controls — waiting periods, universal background checks, etc. — are pushed again and again as common sense, “reasonable” solutions to keep guns out of the wrong hands. When the NRA and other gun rights groups push back, citing the opportunity for tyranny, they are shamed with accusations of being pawns of the gun industry. |

At a time when uncertainty about social order has prompted a large number of Americans to exercise their Second Amendment right to self-defense, the office of Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker announced today that they will not issue new Pistol Purchase Permits until at least April 30th.
While Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) holders and those with an approved Pistol Purchase Permit can still obtain handguns, this leaves new prospective gun owners especially vulnerable. For at least the next 36 days, they cannot buy a handgun or receive one in a private transfer, even from a family member or close friend, unless they go through significantly greater time and expense to obtain a CHP. |

Delaware Republican lawmakers are expressing opposition to the Governor’s decision to close gun stores in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Gun rights advocates across the state were outraged when they learned that gun shops and stores that exclusively sell firearms were deemed non-essential and would be closing at the direction of Governor Carney.
Now, lawmakers are speaking out and weighing in, including State Senator Brian Pettyjohn who called the decision “problematic” and said the state’s consitution protects the right of Delawareans to possess and obtain firearms. |
