It’s become popular on the left — thanks in part to a widely-shared Washington Post op-ed by Adam Weinstein — to scorn so-called “gunsplaining.” Weinstein defines the term as the habit of gun-rights advocates to “bully” gun-control supporters with technical jargon. Think the “AR” in AR-15 stands for “assault rifle”? Then you’re too dumb to talk about gun policy. Did you confuse a magazine and a clip? Then you’re too ignorant to talk about background checks. |

The March for Our Lives events on Saturday began as a student-inspired campaign to bring attention to gun violence is classrooms. But the movement quickly caught the attention of Hollywood types like George Clooney and others famous and wealthy supporters who helped amass more than $3.5 million to produce and stage the roughly 800 separate events in Washington and elsewhere around the world. |

Coloradans have been on a gun buying binge for the last decade, and it can be traced back to the first election of President Barack Obama in 2008. Gun store owners and Second Amendment advocates will often say that Obama was the best gun salesman in history. The Democrat championed limited gun control measures, but never managed to enact large-scale reforms. Still, the specter of gun control has been enough to alter the volume of gun buying in Colorado. |

A dozen state lawmakers have signed a letter urging Gov. Gina Raimondo to make “gun violence in schools” the top priority of the study group she pledged to create, after the Valentine’s Day massacre by a deranged shooter at a Florida high school left 17 people dead. The 12 House Democrats pegged their request to Raimondo’s promise, in an executive order she signed last month, to create a “working group to study gun violence reduction strategies.” |

Kansas state lawmakers are set to discuss a bill Tuesday, which would encourage teachers to carry concealed guns in schools. The proposed bill would make school districts vulnerable to negligence lawsuits if a shooting occurs in a school where teachers were denied permission to carry concealed handguns. It would also prohibit insurance companies from increasing or denying coverage to schools whose teachers are armed. |

History may have been made Saturday by hundreds of thousands of Americans marching in cities across the country leaving mountains of trash in their wake, but the only “message” heard by gun owners was that instead of making schools safer and punishing criminals, they want to ban guns and think the Second Amendment is “outdated.” |

Brazil has extremely strict gun control laws and relatively few firearms. It is estimated there are about 17 million firearms in Brazil. Only 5.4 million are legally owned by private parties. 2.2 million are owned by the military and police, and 9.5 million are illegally possessed. It would take centuries of rigorous enforcement of gun confiscation to reach that level in the United States, if it ever were possible. There are over 400 million firearms in private hands in the United States. A number comparable to Brazil's 17 million guns and 200 million people would be 28 million guns for the United States 330 million people. |

Less than a week after 17 people died in Parkland, Fla., right-wing provocateur Dinesh D’Souza began taunting some of the teenage survivors of the massacre. “Worst news since their parents told them to get summer jobs,” he tweeted on Feb. 20, commenting on a photo showing Parkland survivors crying as state legislators voted down a bill to ban military-style weapons. |

Adult Democrats, Hillary voters and people who call themselves liberals, progressives, and socialists made up the bulk of the anti-gun marches. These groups were already on board with the losing candidates plan to tear up the Constitution, violate the civil rights of and confiscate the self-defense arms of American citizens who have prevented death and injury to themselves over two million times last year.

It's not surprising that children view the world through the lens of a children's tale, but it is unwise. The villains of Harry Potter are one-dimensional Wizard Nazis with a leader literally incapable of feeling love. These books can't serve as a guide to policy debates in which well-meaning individuals disagree, legislation requires bipartisan support, and there are no magical solutions. Otherwise you end up believing Rick Scott is "Voldemort" weeks after he signed gun control measures into law, or that disagreeing with 17-year-olds is equivalent to torturing them with spell Cruciatus. |

Over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of kids marched for gun control in Washington DC and other cities. The protests themselves, I was told, were what participatory democracy looks like — an event worth celebrating whether you agreed with the marchers or not. Indeed, the very act of caring, whether or not these kids fully understood the issue, was a laudable example of civic responsibility. To point out the numerous misleading and ugly partisan attacks they leveled was not only a low blow against the children, but an assault on free expression. |

Second Amendment advocates rallied at Trenton’s War Memorial Monday as a counterpoint to Saturday’s March for Our Lives and to protest a package of six gun control bills up for votes in the Assembly. “We are not the problem, we are law-abiding citizens. We want our children and our grandchildren to be safe,” said Sen. Steven Oroho. |

A bill that would encourage Kansas teachers to carry concealed guns is on the fast track in Topeka, introduced late in the regular session and creating concern over a lack of transparency about the measure. A hearing on the House bill, proposed last week, is scheduled for early Tuesday morning. An Overland Park Democrat said thousands have signed a petition opposing the measure. "I'm just shocked that it's even up for consideration," said Rep. Brett Parker, who is also a teacher in the Olathe school district. |

Bump stocks and other devices that make semiautomatic weapons fire much more rapidly will be banned in Lincoln beginning May 1, under a city ordinance that was adopted on a 6-0 vote Monday night. The decision puts Lincoln in a unique position — among a handful of states and cities — that ban selling and possessing the gun accessories. |

The senior U.S. senator from Hawaii perfectly illustrates the reason why so many gun owners instinctively recoil from arguments for, and automatically dismiss advocates, of gun control. Sen. Brian Schatz wasn’t just painfully ignorant recently, he was proudly ignorant about guns. The Democrat gave shout-outs to protesters marching on Washington over the weekend, tweeting the best signs. His favorite? “Girls clothing is more regulated than guns in America.” Except no, not at all.
