Nineteenth-century gunsmith and inventor John Hancock Hall created a mass production system that had never been seen before. Some of Hall’s guns made that way will be on display at the Maine State Museum’s newest exhibit, which opens Saturday. “Inventors and Sportsmen: Maine Gunsmiths in the 1800s” showcases around 80 artifacts, including about 30 guns, from 22 Maine gunmakers. Hall, who was born in 1781 in what is now Portland, invented a breech-loading mechanism and other machinery whose use spread across the country. His work is featured prominently throughout the exhibit. |

So this is what they mean by "good guys with guns," then — children. In a new series published on NRA Family, author Amelia Hamilton addresses the problem of hyper-violent fairytale narratives by putting firearms in the hands of pint-sized protagonists. In Little Red Riding Hood (Has a Gun) and Hansel and Gretel (Have Guns), we learn that arming the right people (apparently, kids) makes for a lot less bloodshed in daily life. |

The boy once known as the Junkyard Kid suddenly is an old man. Edgar Soyke is turning 90 on April 6. “Time flies,” he said. He got his nickname courtesy of the Great Depression. When his father lost his railroad job, he started a combination auto repair shop and junkyard just outside of Altoona. It became a well-known, if unofficial, stopover for homeless, jobless, directionless men shambling around the country. |

Getting hurt or lost in the mountains in and around Tehachapi sounds like a recipe for an instant disaster. But fear not. Why and how, you ask? Because there is a group of dedicated volunteers whose motto is, “We search so others may live,” according to Capt. Jeff Snyder. Although there is no charge to those who are hurt, lost and rescued, there is a cost associated with training and searching. |

Personal privacy may be more difficult to maintain next year, pending a vote by the Arizona House of Representatives that could remove municipal ordinances against unmanned aerial devices. The House Judiciary Committee approved a list of state regulations on the use of unmanned aerial devices, although the bill may have been softened by the removal of criminal provisions against drones that were present when it was approved by the Senate this year. |

Full disclosure time: We think everybody should reload (or handload) at least some of their ammunition. And scratch that “full disclosure” business—we concede this is simply a bias, and one to which we admit without repentance. “Why?” is where our rationale may need elucidation. We’d stop short of compelling it, of course, but we esteem the process greatly because of the plain, pervasive benefits: Broader and deeper knowledge of shooting and firearms, as well as the option to shoot more from a given cost basis. If there’s a downside to that, it’ll be your turn to explain. We certainly know of none. |
