"Kerry has voted with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence 100 percent the time, and he has earned a grade of 'F' from the powerful National Rifle Association – as well as a 0 percent rating with Gun Owners of America. He opposes granting gun makers immunity from civil lawsuits arising wrongful use of weapons, supports renewing the ban on assault-type weapons, and would require the same background checks at gun shows that are mandatory for other gun sales."
"Kerry’s stump message in a nutshell: I’m a hunter. I like to hunt and shoot guns. I believe heartily in the right to bear arms. But, stick with me now, we gun-totters can certainly stand some common sense rules of gun responsibility." ...
"On the Record:
"Kerry voted for the assault weapons ban contained in the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1993, restricting the manufacture, transfer, and possession of certain semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices. ..."
"Kerry voted for the Brady Bill in November 1993. ..."
"Kerry voted against the motion to table (defeat) the Boxer/Kohl Amendment, requiring that all handguns sold in the United States be sold with a child safety lock. ..."
"Kerry voted against the Craig Amendment that would have required that gun stores have trigger locks in stock and available for sale. ..."
"Kerry voted against the Large Ammunition Magazine Ban Amendment to ban the importation of large capacity ammunition feeding devices. ..."
"Kerry voted against the motion to table (defeat) the Child Access Prevention Amendment to increase penalties for individuals who permit juvenile access to firearms. ..."
"Kerry voted for the Lautenberg Gun Show Amendment to the Violent and Repeat Juvenile Offender Accountability and Rehabilitation Act of 1999 to close the loophole allowing individuals to sell guns from their private collections at gun shows without completing background checks for purchasers. ..."
"Kerry voted against the motion to table (defeat) the Ban on Unlicensed Sale of Guns on Internet, an amendment to the Violent and Repeat Juvenile Offender Accountability and Rehabilitation Act of 1999 banning the unlicensed sale of guns on the Internet by requiring websites clearly designed to sell guns to be federally licensed firearms dealers and to comply with all such federal laws. ..."

"People accuse me of being a single-issue writer, a single- issue thinker, and a single- issue voter, but it isn't true. "...a growing body of research has revealed that the practice of chemically matching bullets is seriously flawed." ...
"For several years, statisticians, metallurgists, and others outside the FBI have questioned the courtroom use of bullet chemical analyses. Now, the National Academies' report, Forensic Analysis: Weighing Bullet Lead Evidence, has brought the practice into the spotlight. That report, combined with past studies detailing the forensic tool's shortcomings, could call into question many past convictions in which results of the chemical analysis of bullets was introduced as evidence."
"First developed in the 1960s, bullet chemical analysis has been used by prosecutors when a suspect's weapon is not available or when the bullet found at a crime scene is too fragmented to permit visual inspection of the characteristic markings that firearms leave on intact bullets." |

"What I do want to stress is this: gun owners don't have many friends apart from other gun owners. There are a few who are on our side on general principles but don't own guns themselves, but the majority of people you will see that believe in an individual having the Right to Arms are gun owners. & hell, even some gun owners aren't our friends. We do have a lot of enemies, both in ideology & fact."
"So what I would recommend is if you know anyone who advocates civilian disarmament or who actively advances it (such as those people named above) then politely try to change their minds. Convince them that what they're doing or encouraging hurts not only themselves but everyone in our society. If you honestly attempt to sway them & they still persist in their encouragement of civilian disarmament then politely but firmly tell them that you've got no choice but to take it personally & as such you'll be disassociating yourself from them. Don't do business with them; don't go to social events with them; don't invite them to dinner, etc. Leave an invitation open to discuss their views on civilian disarmament but make it clear that that's it." |

(Thursday, March 25, 2004) -- Meadville area gun dealer Daryl Sivik was apprehended by federal agents this morning, as heavily armed investigators raided his Williamson Road gun business in West Mead Township.
Sivik could be facing federal firearms charges in connection with Thursday’s raid. During the raid dozens of heavily armed ATF agents wearing flak jackets, helmets and carrying military style weapons swarmed the area around Sivik`s gun shop around 9:00 this morning.
State police closed the road for hundreds of yards in each direction. Dogs were also used by investigators at the scene.
Gun dealer Daryl Sivik is an outspoken critic of the federal government, and is not a stranger to controversy. He's known to be a supporter of local militias and back in 1998, Sivik put an unlicensed low power pirate radio station on the air from a make shift studio on his property. The content can be described as extremely right wing. Sivik also leads an annual UN flag burning ceremony in downtown Meadville to protest US involvement in the United Nations.
In 2003, Sivik unsuccessfully ran for elected office as a West Mead Township Supervisor.
By Thursday afternoon Sivik was in federal custody in Erie facing a variety of charges. |

"Dear Mr. Dad: Should I tell my preschoolers about guns? We don't watch violent programming or own any toy guns and no one I know even owns one. But you can't turn on the TV or open a newspaper these days without a story about someone getting shot. What should I do?"
"A: To start with, continue to keep your children far away from violent media, including children's programs that involve guns and gun-like lasers. Don't allow them to play with toy guns, especially realistic-looking ones. But be realistic -- you can't shield your children forever. One of these days they'll come across a gun and it's critical that they know what it is and that it's dangerous." |

"A year ago, leaders of the National Rifle Association and the National Shooting Sports Foundation signed a pledge to protect the environment from lead pollution at gun ranges." ...
"Six months later, though, the NRA launched a drive to do away with any environmental regulation of gun ranges in Florida. Marion Hammer, the NRA's lobbyist in Tallahassee, told lawmakers that gun range owners need to be protected from bureaucrats who 'are drunk with power, and they think they can bully anybody they want.' " ...
"By trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist, the bill will create a result opposite from the one the NRA had sought: Range owners will face more state scrutiny than they do now, not less." |
