The U.S. Justice Department's launch of a civil rights probe into whether Los Angeles is taking too long to issue permits to carry a concealed handgun drew criticism on Friday from advocates who called it a sharp departure from the department's longstanding approach.

Attorney General Pam Bondi in a statement late on Thursday said her office would launch a "pattern or practice" investigation into whether the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department imposes excessive wait times for people applying for concealed-carry permits.

A deadly altercation late Friday night in northeast Albuquerque left one person dead. According to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot around 10:15 p.m. at the Sandia Vista Apartments on 901 Tramway Blvd. NE.

Police say a group of teenagers were involved in a physical altercation and ended up chasing others to a second-floor unit. The confrontation escalated when someone threw a rock through an apartment window. Fearing for his family’s safety, the resident of the unit—whose children were inside with him—retrieved a firearm and reportedly warned the teens not to enter before opening fire. One teen was shot and later died.

A Spanish Fort father is being hailed by many as a responsible gun owner who did what he had to do to protect his family during a terrifying home invasion early Saturday morning.

Just after midnight, a woman inside a home on Caisson Trace heard noises outside, then the unmistakable sound of shattering glass. She quickly woke her husband. Moments later, a 17-year-old male had forced his way through a broken front window and into the home, where the father — now alert and armed — was waiting.

In a move that shows just how far removed the United Kingdom has drifted from the basic concept of individual liberty, the British government has officially announced a new ban on “ninja swords” — a category of bladed tools now deemed illegal to own, sell, import, or even make.

Beginning August 1st, UK citizens caught with one could face up to six months in prison, with that penalty increasing to two years under the pending Crime and Policing Bill.

In an apparent application of a provision of the emergency anti-crime legislation passed by the D.C. Council last year, both the victim and one of the alleged assailants were charged with discarding guns. The D.C. Code makes it unlawful to improperly discard a firearm.

In a news release issued last year, D.C. Council member Brooke Pinto (D-Ward 2) said one provision of the emergency legislation established a new offense for “unlawful discarding of firearms and ammunition.”

It was not clear Friday night how often authorities have invoked the measure that prohibits unlawful discarding.

Discussions about gun control usually bring up the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. All well and good, but they ignore Colorado’s Constitution, which has its own firearms provision. Article II, Section 13 provides the right to bear arms, stating: “The right of no person to keep and bear arms in defense of his home, person and property, or in aid of the civil power when thereto legally summoned, shall be called in question; but nothing herein contained shall be construed to justify the practice of carrying concealed weapons.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi recently took an important step toward addressing the unjust, constitutionally dubious burdens imposed by that policy. An interim final rule that took effect last week aims to revive the moribund legal process for restoring the Second Amendment rights of "prohibited persons" who pose no threat to public safety. The rule rescinds the delegation of that process to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), which Congress has long prohibited from accepting applications for relief.

A bill that would ban the manufacture and drastically restrict the sale of certain semiautomatic firearms that can accept detachable ammunition magazines in Colorado is now headed to Gov. Jared Polis’ desk after it cleared its final legislative hurdle Friday.

Polis has signaled he will sign the Democrat-backed measure, which would be one of the most restrictive gun regulations ever adopted in Colorado.

Senate Bill 3 would prohibit people from buying the otherwise banned weapons — most semiautomatic rifles as well as some semiautomatic pistols and shotguns — unless they get approved by their county sheriff and complete up to a dozen hours of training.

Manhattan's district attorney is asking a Chinese manufacturer of 3D printers to block the production of homemade “ghost guns” after untraceable weapons made by such printers were used in a number of crimes in the city.

DA Alvin Bragg sent a letter Wednesday to Shenzhen Creality 3D Technology — which manufacturers several popular printer models available at U.S. stores — urging it to install software in its printers to block the printing of common gun parts, according to a statement from the DA’s office.

“We found a number of lawsuits for the Sig Sauer gun,” Kitsap County Sheriff John Gese said this week. “Some of those lawsuits have been successful, so I told commissioners we deserve guns that are dependable. There was a question about trustworthiness, so we thought it was probably in the public’s best interest, to go ahead and swap these guns out.”

KCSO had 250 P320s, having used the handguns since 2018. An order for new firearms, model DR920 from Shadow Systems, is expected to arrive in the following weeks, after which deputies will be trained to use the new guns. Gese said he estimates KCSO will have completed the switch to the new guns, which are similar to the Sig Sauer, in the next few months.

In a significant setback for Second Amendment advocates, the Supreme Court's recent ruling in Bondi v. VanDerStok upholds stringent regulations on so-called “ghost guns,” undermining the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.

The Court's 7-2 decision endorses the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) rule that imposes serial numbers, background checks, and age verification on firearm kits previously unregulated. This ruling effectively expands federal oversight to include weapon parts kits and partially completed frames or receivers, categorizing them as firearms under the Gun Control Act of 1968.

A Texas company must stop selling and advertising machines that make ghost guns to Californians while a lawsuit brought against them by the state of California advances, a San Diego judge ruled on Friday.

In 2024, California sued Austin, Texas-based company Defense Distributed, which produces so-called computer numerical control milling machines. The state says those machines allow customers to manufacture their own ghost guns — that is, firearms that lack serial numbers or purchase records, making them much harder for law enforcement to track.

Cody Jacobs, a LAW lecturer and an expert in Second Amendment and gun law, applauded the decision, while telling BU Today that the court narrowed its scope, allowing the possibility of future challenges from gun rights groups.

A San Diego federal court judge ruled this week in favor of a state law prohibiting the sale of semi-automatic rifles and other long guns to 18-to-20-year-olds, with exceptions, by licensed dealers.

In a summary judgment issued Wednesday, U.S. District Judge M. James Lorenz ruled that the law does not violate the Second Amendment and that the restriction “fits within the historical tradition of firearm regulation.”

The judgment is the result of a lawsuit filed in 2019 against the state by firearms dealers, advocates and young adults alleging that the law, California Penal Code Section 27510, infringed on the right to bear arms.

New legislation in Raleigh looks to crack down on untraceable firearms known as “ghost guns.” These firearms lack serial numbers and have been a growing problem with 3D printing becoming more advanced every day.

House Bill 545 was filed on Wednesday by Mecklenburg County Democrat Jordan Lopez. The measure would ban the weapon throughout North Carolina. The bill’s filing came days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 to uphold a federal ban on the weapons.

Police in Minnesota aren't required to track guns recovered from crime scenes, but a proposal to change that had its first hearing by state lawmakers on Friday.

The proposal comes less than a year after a WCCO investigation into tracing crime guns through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' National Tracing Center. We took you to West Virginia to see the process and showed how the trace can make a difference in solving a gun crime.

Law enforcement agencies have the ability to trace guns recovered at crime scenes through the ATF for free. WCCO discovered that not all agencies in Minnesota use the system to gain investigative leads.

On March 27, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the initiation of a new “pattern or practice” civil rights investigation, this time focusing on potential violations related to the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD).

The investigation, detailed in a press release from the DOJ’s Office of Public Affairs, marks a significant step in the federal government’s efforts to examine whether particular states or local government entities are engaging in systemic practices that infringe upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

In recent years, Glock handguns have stood out among others for one very specific — and lethal — reason: their design. Glock handguns can easily be converted into a machine gun with the quick installation of an auto sear that costs only about $25.

It seems hard to fathom, but with a screwdriver and a “Glock switch” — that’s what they’re commonly called — anyone can turn a handgun into a machine gun that can fire as fast as, or faster than, many fully automatic firearms used by the U.S. military. These types of auto sears are called Glock switches – even though Glock doesn’t make them – for the simple reason that Glock makes their handguns so easy to convert.
