"Last night, I was chatting with a dear friend who lives in Australia. He made a statement heard in many quarters. 'You Americans and your love of hand guns are ruining your country and making you the laughing stock of the civilized world.' All we had to do was 'look at the numbers to see the truth.' Well, I did look at the numbers. If you compare the total number of murders in the U.S. to that of a small country like, say, Costa Rica, you’d be right. But to get a fair and balanced apples-to-apples comparison, you need to look at the number of crimes per 1,000 residents. Now it get's really interesting . . ."

In Illinois, a FOID (Firearm Owners Identification) card is required merely to own a firearm, or even a single round of ammunition. That's the information the Associated Press is demanding--the names of the approximately 1.3 million Illinois residents whom the Illinois State Police have deemed 'qualified' to own guns." ...

"Choosing a concealed carry firearm can be a daunting task, often involving trips to various gun stores, consultations with friends that own firearms, late-night internet forum browsing, and possibly asking a spouse how much money one is allowed to spend. The gun lobby maintains that, if everyone were armed, the 'the security of a free State' would be enhanced. Many others believe that we would all be more secure if there were fewer guns out there."

"As it happens, there is a country that mandates gun ownership — Switzerland. It may be perennially neutral, but universal military service is the law of the land, and citizens keep their military-issue guns with them at home after they are discharged from active duty. The result: Switzerland has the highest rate of gun suicides in Europe." ...
