In a recent post, I commented on the editorial by a former managing editor at the Knoxville News-Sentinel. But I didn't stop there, I wrote a letter to the editor. But freedom of the press doesn't mean that that newspapers are required to print letters to the editor. So far, they haven't chosen to print my letter. Here it is- |

There is a fear that the media doesn’t seem to recognize. It isn’t Islamaphobia. It isn’t homophobia. It isn’t xenophobia. Journalists love to discuss those because they primarily generate negativity towards conservatives and Republicans.
I am talking about an irrational fear of an inanimate object. It is an item that will neither move on its own, nor explode or damage anything by itself. I am talking about firearms. This irrational fear is called hoplophobia. It is not a recognized medical illness. The term was coined by legendary U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper, a World War II and Korean War combat veteran. He initially described it as “an irrational aversion to weapons.” |

The shooting death of a teenager in Derry last summer was a justifiable act of self-defense, investigators said Thursday.
Cole Kinney, 17, of Lowell, Massachusetts, was shot and killed July 20 on North Shore Road in Derry. An autopsy showed that he died of a single gunshot wound to the chest, and his death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators said Devin Rios was identified as the shooter, but he claimed that he fired in self-defense. The Attorney General's Office said Thursday that its investigation determined that it was self-defense. |

Utah's House of Representatives has approved changes to the state's stand-your-ground self-defense law making it clear that people don't need to try to run away before using force, including deadly force, against someone.
Republican Rep. Cory Maloy's proposal says a person doesn't need to back away before using force even if they have a safe way to escape. If someone is prosecuted for using force, Maloy's bill won't allow a court to hear evidence about whether the person tried to flee first. |

Michael DiMatteo, an investigator, said Michael Lake, 27, felted threatened when John Souza rode up on his bike next to Lake's car on February 15.
DiMatteo said there were no witnesses to the incident but explained the surveillance video lines up with Lake's statements.
"The surveillance video helps us substantiate the statements that are being made," he said.
DiMatteo said Lake was and is being corporative. He explained so far their investigation points to this being self-defense.
"There were statements made about punching the window. There is footage in the surveillance footage that you can see Mr. Souza raised his hand up and appear to strike the vehicle," DiMatteo explained. |

A bill that would allow people to bring guns into the state Capitol is one step away from the governor's desk after a Senate panel advanced it Wednesday to the chamber's floor.
The State Affairs Committee voted 5-4 to approve the plan, which would allow people who have an enhanced permit to bring concealed handguns into the Capitol if they register beforehand with security. The proposal has advanced farther than at least two similar bills proposed last legislative session, but Gov. Dennis Daugaard's opposition to the legislation is a steep obstacle for supporters. |

Ever thought about getting a .40-caliber pistol?
It's one of the popular calibers for concealed carry and for service pistols, so there's plenty of reason to do so. Almost every major manufacturer offers a pistol in this chambering and all the major ammunition manufacturers do as well. Ballistic testing over the years and performance in service with police agencies has shown .40 S&W to be a very capable self-defense round.
Right now is probably the best time to buy one.
It's not so much that .40 S&W is having some sort of renaissance. Actually, if anything the opposite is the case….which is exactly why there has never been a better time to get one. |

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has concluded, in large part, its investigation into the shooting death of a Hancock County man on April 25, 2016 outside a single wide manufactured home in Madison.
According to Madison Police Chief Bill Ashburn, the GBI identified Martavious Jackson, no age listed, Madison as the person who shot and killed Antonio Smith, 26, of Sparta, outside the East Jefferson Street trailer.
However, Ashburn said, Jackson will not be charged in the shooting. “Based on evidence gathered and statements made to investigators, no charges will be filed at this time,” he said. “It appears it was nothing more than an act of self defense.” |

The Florida Supreme Court found the state’s ban on openly carrying handguns constitutional, raising the stakes for open carry laws under consideration in the Legislature this year.
In its 4-2 decision, the Florida Supreme Court agreed with an appeals court ruling that found Florida’s gun laws do not violate the constitution because a person’s right to self-defense is not infringed by restricting firearms to being hidden away.
The case began in 2012 when Fort Pierce resident Dale Lee Norman received his concealed carry license and, the same day, openly carried his firearm in a holster as he walked down the street. |

House Bill 1803, which prohibits the expenditure of public monies to oppose rights protected by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, passed out of the House Public Safety Committee by a vote of 7-6.
“The right to keep and bear arms is one of the most sacred to our citizenry,” said Roberts, R-Hominy. “With the state facing a deficit of over $850 million for the upcoming fiscal year, the practice of spending taxpayer dollars lobbying for gun control needs to end. Allowing the expenditure of public dollars to erode our rights protected in the constitution is an affront to our freedom.” |

Democrats helped too. They made the mistake of going on offense on gun control. They were playing with fire. But the issue proved irresistible after Terry McAuliffe stressed gun control in his successful race for governor of Virginia in 2013. McAuliffe didn't get any gun restrictions passed, but he hooked Democrats. Next was the former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. He poured millions into Senate races in 2014, tightening the Democratic party's attachment to gun control. |

The majority of Floridians don’t support allowing guns on college campuses and over half oppose open carry in the Sunshine State, according to a new poll.
The University of North Florida survey found 62 percent of Florida voters oppose legislation to allow concealed weapons on college campuses, with 48 percent strongly opposing the measure.
A smaller percentage -- 34 percent -- said they support campus carry. |

Washington state lawmakers are proposing a mandate that would require gun buyers to purchase liability insurance coverage as a prerequisite to being allowed to own a gun. Three area firearms business owners welcomed recent action in the state Legislature to repeal the SAFE Act in upstate New York.
Bills have been introduced in the Senate and Assembly, and the proposed legislation would leave the act intact for the New York City boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.

After a robust debate on the state's concealed-carry law, the Idaho House State Affairs Committee voted Thursday to expand the list of people eligible to carry concealed handguns to include current members of the armed forces.
"This would allow people in or out of uniform to protect themselves, their families, their loved ones and, in turn, protect our loved ones in the case of national significance—a terrorist attack," said Rep. Don Cheatham (R-Post Falls), sponsor of House Bill 93.
That wasn't enough for Rep. Christy Zito (R-Hammett), who indicated she wanted Cheatham's bill to be expanded. |

In responding to NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre’s CPAC speech, gun control advocate Ladd Everitt falsely claims that the NRA has long called for armed insurrection, but can provide no real proof of that claim.
Everitt argues that NRA spent the run-up to the election urging group members to be ready to grab their guns and defend freedom to the point of “insurrection” if Donald Trump lost. But his argument is more than suspect, and the supporting data is even weaker. |

If you’re into firearms, you should be familiar with the Hearing Protection Act, maybe you already are, but if you’re not – we’re here to help. This proposed legislation would make it easier for gun owners to acquire suppressors by removing burdensome regulatory hurdles and eliminating the $200 tax stamp requirement.
The Hearing Protection Act is a major step in the right direction for sportsmen and firearms owners, making safer shooting more accessible. But for now, we need to understand the HPA and how we can support it in order to make it a reality. |

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee met for a decision making hearing on Senate Bill 898. During the hearing, no oral testimony was permitted; however, many provided written testimony in opposition, pointing out the many flaws and constitutional concerns.
Despite this strong opposition, the committee passed the bill with technical amendments. This was the final committee hurdle before heading to the floor. While the bill has not been scheduled for a vote yet, it is imperative that you contact your state Senator and urge them to oppose this misguided gun-control bill. Right out of the gate in his opinion piece about so-called “smart guns” in the New York Daily News’ Sunday edition, Washington Ceasefire’s Ralph Fascitelli perpetuates the false impression that “gun violence” somehow accounts for the “almost 34,000 Americans (that) die from firearms annually.”
Fascitelli knows that roughly two-thirds of annual firearms-related deaths are suicides, not criminal violence. That’s why Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, has been a driving force in creating a “Safer Homes” suicide prevention project in the Evergreen State. |
