. . . "Americans are set to lose another war, too, if Washington's ruling elite doesn't collectively grow a spine. Only this war isn't being fought 10,000 miles away. This war is being waged along the U.S. southwest border, and the ramifications of losing it are extreme."

"Granted, it's not the kind of traditional war, where armies face off against each other across a battlefield. But it is just as deadly, and it is growing in intensity year by year."

"This war is being fought between ordinary Americans living in these border regions and elements of Mexican police, military, drug lords and human smugglers—the latter group literally invading our country at will because there is no serious effort to stop them." ...

"The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday that government agents can search and even dismantle a car's gas tank as part of drug and other smuggling interdiction at the nation's borders."

"Border officers can randomly search gas tanks, despite the absence of specific indication that a particular car is suspect, the high court said. People crossing the border have less expectation of privacy than elsewhere, and searching the inner reaches of a car is not the same thing as a strip search or other intrusive search of the driver, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist wrote for the court." ...

"A federal appeals court in California had said that officers can visually inspect gas tanks, but not dismantle them unless they have reason to suspect wrongdoing."

"In terms of personal privacy, a man's home is his castle."

"It is a bedrock principle of the Fourth Amendment that law-enforcement officers may not intrude into someone's house without the authorization of a judge."

"But what about a car? Do Americans have the same right to privacy when they take to the nation's roads and highways?"

"Not even close, say legal experts."

" 'When you are in a car, you are fair game,' says Tracey Maclin, a law professor and Fourth Amendment scholar at Boston University School of Law."

"The limited privacy protections that do exist for cars may shrink even more as a result of a case set for oral argument Wednesday at the US Supreme Court."

"Washington's appetite for easy surveillance has again put civil liberties on the run."

"The FBI, the DoJ and the DEA have jointly asked the FCC to extend hidebound, phone-company style wiretap capability into new Internet-based phone calls (called 'VoIP' for Voice over Internet Protocol). They argue that leaving the new technology unregulated would make it harder to monitor possible terrorist communications."

"Apart from this new effort to make Internet phone calls wiretap-friendly, the government has instituted controversial and invasive computer-assisted airline passenger screening, escalated e-mail monitoring, and sought the Total Information Awareness data-mining project. Even a national ID card was proposed."

"Today in DEAland people convicted of 'drug crimes' have to express their remorse and be grateful for merely outrageous sentences. Through this obsequy the defendants may also spare their family from prosecution or loss of their homes. By doing this, they confirm the judgment of the state that the use of marijuana is on a moral par with the violations of the rights of others, while the state violates the most basic of human rights. ... A youngster discovered a loaded handgun under a bush this weekend near the intersection of E Street NW and Palmer. He turned the 25 cal. pistol over to his parents who then called the police.

"We can't tie it to any crime at this time," said Capt. Leroy Johnson of the Ardmore Police Department. "It was weathered and appeared to have been there for some time."

Johnson said should a child find a weapon, he should leave it alone and call for an adult who can secure it and call the police. If the adult is unfamiliar with the weapon, he should not touch it, call the police and stand by until officers arrive.

Many people aren't happy with parts of the U.S. Patriot Act.

Grand Rapids City Commissioners added their names to the list Tuesday by voting for a measure that puts the city on record as opposing any law discriminating against Arab Americans, Muslim Americans and Americans from South Asia.

Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell is taking issue with provisions of the U.S. Patriot Act. He says it violates civil liberties.

"With the USA Patriot Act, those rights are threatened. We've given them up out of fear and perhaps that fear has passed now. But we want to reclaim those rights," said Mayor Heartwell.

The vote was not unanimous.

Second Ward Commissioner Lynn Rabaut says the city's measure is too broad.
