After a sometimes heated and passionate debate, the Senate on Saturday passed a proposal that would allow New Mexicans to carry concealed handguns. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Shannon Robinson (D-Albuquerque), cleared on a 25-17 vote, with 5 Democrats supporting the measure. The bill now goes to the House for consideration. The Philippine gunsmith specializes in revolvers, and it takes him 12 days to fabricate a weapon. Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott has privately objected to several of President Bush's proposed high-level nominations. He told Clay Johnson, the tough Texan who is Bush's personnel chief, that they will not be confirmed by the Senate. "You can make every appointment from Texas," Lott told Johnson, "but we won't confirm them."

The angry father of Peyton Tuthill said Saturday that the "cowardly decision" of judges who spared convicted murderer Donta Page's life matched the cowardice of the man who raped and killed his daughter.

"It was a travesty of justice," Steve Tuthill said of the three-judge panel's unanimous decision Friday to give a life sentence to the man who ignored his daughter's pleas for her life and slit her throat when she screamed for help.

A medium security prison escapee was beaten with a shovel as he attempted to break into an Idaho man's home. The Oregonian's 3/2 printing stated that the police found him to be exceptionally cooperative when they arrived. It makes me wonder if we will face "combat shovel" registration and confiscation in the near future...
