"Well, I see the Brits are still fond of melodramatic titles, especially if the topic is firearms. As the title of this opinion piece shows 'Licence to kill – life under the gun in the US'. I mean really, why are British Subjects, or ex-British as the case may be, so fearful of guns that they feel the need to carry on as they do. The author, Jarek Garlinski seems to think a few guns in a farmhouse merit a comparison to an infantry battalion’s arsenal. Please, spare us the exaggerations."

"We get treated to the typical sob story; 'a drunken Scotsman banging on someone’s door at 3a.m. and gets shot, how awful'. Well, I am sure that for every British ex-pat who gets himself shot 10 years ago ... we can point to a Tony Martin ..." ...

"A 14-year-old honor student, gunned down on Chicago's west side, was an innocent bystander and was likely killed with an assault rifle, police are reporting this afternoon. A stray bullet to her head fired from a block away killed her instantly when it came through her living room window."

"This shooting came the same day as the Illinois General Assembly failed to take action to pass HB 2414, a ban on assault weapons in the state of Illinois and underscores the need for the Illinois General Assembly to act on this pending bill to ban assault weapons in Illinois. The shooting came just two days after a group of assault weapons manufacturers gathered in Springfield to insist that their products were 'not used in crimes' ..." ...

I noticed in the credits at the end of his op-ed that Ron Miller is a science-fiction writer ["Hold your fire: Second Amendment was aimed at building militias," March 1].

It reads, "Ron Miller of King George is a science-fiction and science-fact writer and illustrator. His books include, with William Hartmann, 'The Grand Tour: A Traveler's Guide to the Solar System,' now in a new edition."

Mr. Miller's article was truly a masterpiece of science fiction!

The Second Amendment is about empowering the people (the common people) to "throw off the shackles of an oppressive and tyrannical government if need be."

It gives us, the people, the ultimate ability to control our government and keep it in check.
