"Stung by reversals in his office’s prosecution of the Reese family and mindful that scrutiny for his role in that case could derail his elevation to the federal bench, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico Kenneth J. Gonzales filed three documents yesterday with the intent of denying a defense motion to dismiss outstanding counts and compel prosecutors to testify at an evidentiary hearing, and also to go over the head of U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Brack." ... |

"Maryland Public Television broadcast a dangerously mythical view of gun violence in the evening of Feb. 19. This program was designed to create emotion rather than a complete connection with reality. For example, it continued the myth that the Second Amendment is solely about militias. It is not per Justice Scalia's opinion of the U.S. Supreme Court in Heller v. District of Columbia. Scalia uses 64 pages to analyze the 27 words of the Second Amendment. These above reproach arguments dismissed the militia clause as having no restriction of 'keep and bear arms.'" ... |

"In my seemingly never-ending quest to acquire long range rifles, I initially skipped over the .308. My first real distance rifle was my .300 Win Mag project. More recently, I had the opportunity to pick up a .338 Lapua. The problem is that shooting the .300 Win Mag isn’t a cheap proposition, and the .338 is even worse. I decided that I wanted to get something that was a bit cheaper to shoot, but I didn’t really want another bolt action gun. And my interest in military rifles eventually brought me around to the M14, or more specifically, the semi-auto version of the M14, which Springfield Armory was only too happy to provide (in exchange for a fair amount of cash) in the form of an M1A . . ." ... |

"The M14/M1A is, functionally, a Garand action for a shorter cartridge and a removable box magazine. It’s the result of John Garand himself telling the DOD (formerly the War Department ...) that there was no way to achieve a full-auto rifle with a full-powered rifle cartridge with a .30-06 in a 10lb rifle. There’s just no way. If you review the historical accounts of the M14 project, you find that Garand was no dummy – he told the Army brass that we needed an 'intermediate' power cartridge like the 8mm Kurtz or something similar to achieve full-auto fire in a 10lb rifle. With the popularity of the AR-15 and other mostly modular firearms designs, gun manufacturers have taken to making small changes and calling the result a 'new' gun. Which pisses me off to no end. "My single biggest pet peeve with bolt action rifles these days is the height of the cheek rest. There was a time when iron sights on bolt action rifles was the norm, but with the price of optics so incredibly low these days, it’s damn near impossible to resist slapping one on your gun. And then there are the scads of higher end rifles that don’t even have a front sight, making a scope is the only way to go. And yet the cheek piece on so many of these rifles seems to have been designed to put your eye in line with the nonexistent iron sights — too low for a scope by far. That doesn’t make sense. Thankfully, there’s a solution." ... |

"The Ruger SR45 and the Glock 21 are big pistols and hard to hide. In cold parts of the country where owners bundle up like they’re ready to harpoon a few seals, either pistol would be somewhat concealable, at least until the parkas come off. In warm weather with no outerwear to disguise the guns, either pistol would be as obtrusive as a Class III goiter. They’re both heavy, too. So, is bigger better? Do we really want to carry oversized, non-concealable .45s? And if we do want gigantic hoglegs dangling from our duty belts, do we want either of these?" ... |

"Setting aside the fact that the shooter above wasn’t acting in self-defense, props to the not-so-gregarious gunman for shooting and moving. When it comes to gunfights (not to mention executions) it’s always a good idea to have an exit strategy. It’s usually best to be implementing that strategy as you’re shooting. Granted, standing and shooting gives you a more stable platform, which increases accuracy. Which you kinda need when you’re going for a head shot. Still, for defensive gun owners, shooting while moving is a five-out-five strategy. Where was I? Oh yes: keeping a cartridge in the chamber of your defensive gun . . ." ... |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Those, who have the command of the arms in a country are masters of the state, and have it in their power to make what revolutions they please. [Thus,] there is no end to observations on the difference between the measures likely to be pursued by a minister backed by a standing army, and those of a court awed by the fear of an armed people. — Aristotle, as quoted by John Trenchard and Water Moyle, An Argument Shewing, That a Standing Army Is Inconsistent with a Free Government, and Absolutely Destructive to the Constitution of the English Monarchy [London, 1697]. |
