While Sunday night’s Academy Awards ratings reportedly sagged more than 15 percent from last year’s program, a leading national gun rights organization appeared to soar with a social media jab at anti-gun celebrities who visually promoted their agenda while under the protection of bodyguards and a legion of armed police. |

Last week I wrote a long essay in The Atlantic that represented my best effort to explain “gun culture” to those who may be more hostile to gun rights than, say, the typical reader of National Review. I began by describing threats to my family and how a person’s decision to carry a weapon is often directly tied to personal experience of real danger. Today, my friend Bethany Mandel published a similar essay in the New York Times, describing how her mother once chased off an intruder with a gun and how she herself decided to buy a gun when her family was threatened during the 2016 presidential campaign. |

National Rifle Association memberships surged in the wake of the anti-NRA protests and “media bias” that followed the February 14 Florida school shooting. The Daily Mail reports that Google searches for “NRA membership” rose “4,900 percent” since the Florida attack. That rise occurred at a time when many Democrats, media personalities, and Hollywood celebrities were denouncing the NRA as causal in the shooting that took 17 lives in a gun-free zone.

Holt Elementary School went on lockdown — blinds shut, lights off, students huddled — recently due to a domestic violence situation across the street involving a man with gun. "One little boy said, 'Mrs. Davis, are we going to die?'" said Rep. Steve Handy, R-Layton. "I'm trying to find, and I believe with good faith you are, too, some kind of balance in our society today to stop that if we can," he told the House Judiciary Committee.

The Florida State Senate passed a bill Monday that would raise the age to buy a firearm from 18 to 21, require a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases and ban the sale or possession of bump fire stocks, which can make it easier for a semi-automatic weapon to function like an automatic rifle. The “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act” (SB 7026) would also give law enforcement more power to seize weapons and ammunition from those deemed mentally unfit or otherwise a threat and provide additional funding for armed school resource officers and for mental health services.

Gun owners in the U.S. who live along state lines are often only a few missteps away from years in prison. Consider the case of a Pennsylvania mother of two, Shaneen Allen, who was legally armed before she crossed a state line. One moment she was completely within the confines of the law, the next she was facing years in prison. If it weren’t for a media blitz that got the attention of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who pardoned her, she might have spent much longer in jail than the 48 days she did. This happens to countless otherwise law abiding people every year, and is the type of injustice the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 was written to address.

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators want state law enforcement to be alerted when someone who isn't allowed to buy a gun tries to purchase one. U.S. Sens. Pat Toomey and Chris Coons on Monday said they will introduce a bill that requires federal authorities to notify states when a felon or a fugitive attempts to buy a firearm but fails the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As I have stood in the crosshairs of those who target Second Amendment freedoms, I've realized that firearms are not the only issue. No, it's much, much bigger than that. I've come to understand that a cultural war is raging across our land, in which, with Orwellian fervor, certain acceptable thoughts and speech are mandated. — Charlton Heston |
