Belgian company FN Herstal released their FN 5.7x28mm cartridge in 1991, after NATO requested a replacement for the 9x19mm cartridge. Kevlar body armor was increasingly being used, and was effective against the 9mm, so it became a priority to develop a cartridge that could defeat this body armor. The 5.7x28mm accomplished this task by penetrating a level IIIA vest at 200 meters without any difficulty. |

Since the Federal Register published the ATF's final rule to restrict stabilizing pistol braces on January 31, dozens of states as well as many private organizations have launched legal battles against the ATF, claiming that the new rule is unconstitutional. Luckily, the recent overturn of the "bump stock ban" sets a strong legal precedent to quickly overturn the new stabilizing brace restriction. |

A new UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) poll released earlier this week revealed 86 percent of Democrats think imposing greater controls on gun ownership is more important than protecting Second Amendment rights.
By contrast, 82 percent of Republicans believe it is more important to protect Second Amendment rights than to restrict them (12%). |

In New Orleans, a former Innocence Project lawyer named Emily Maw is currently serving as an assistant district attorney. And it is going about as well as you would expect. Maw is now the focus of controversy for declining to press charges in at least 15 gun crimes that occurred over the Mardi Gras season. These crimes included at least one egregious case in which the defendant was carrying around a machine gun — a federal crime that carries a lengthy prison sentence. That particular defendant also had prior convictions, according to local news reports.

After years of trying to pass a bill to allow people to carry concealed guns in Nebraska without a permit, conservative lawmakers are on the cusp of doing so, thanks in part to the defection of two Democratic Omaha senators — the only Black lawmakers in the body — who cited racial disparity in enforcing gun laws in their districts. After three days of debate, lawmakers voted 36-12 Friday to advance the bill. It must survive two more rounds of debate to pass.

Many on the anti-Second Amendment side think that law-abiding Americans should not be able to legally purchase firearms, and Discover’s recent announcement that it will implement the new merchant category code (MCC) created to track purchases at gun stores gives those types another potential tool for creating a database of people engaged in perfectly legal conduct; a database that the government cannot maintain, but could be able to access. |

A Northern District of Texas Federal judge issued a preliminary injunction against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) attempt to regulate unfinished frames and receivers. In 2021, President Joe Biden ordered the ATF to issue new rules surrounding unfinished firearms frames and receivers, known colloquially as 80% frames and receivers. The ATF refers to these items as privately made firearms (PMF). Anti-gun groups and politicians call these items “ghost guns” because they do not include serial numbers and require the end user to finish the item before it can fire. |
