"I emigrated from Venezuela where, a few years ago, the government came for our guns. We were told we would be safer without them. Today, they would do anything for the Second Amendment freedom that we enjoy as Americans," says a Venezuelan in a National Rifle Association ad.

In the good ol’ days, back before social media, before the World Wide Web and even before disco and unleaded gasoline, the number “1911” used in reference to a pistol meant a USGI M1911 or M1911A1 or one of a handful of Colt’s commercial spinoffs. With a few notable exceptions, you generally knew the writer meant an all-steel, semi-automatic pistol with a single-action trigger and a barrel 5 inches in length.

If you read Shooting Illustrated regularly, you’re probably not the type who’ll settle for making do with whatever shotgun you happen to own, even if it’s not ideal for home defense. But many Americans are. Fact is, any gun in the home is better than none for self-defense, and many of those guns are old sporting shotguns like single-shots and double barrels.

In 2015 and 2016 combined, the Marion County Sheriff's Office and Ocala and Belleview police departments reported that 281 guns — mostly handguns — were stolen from 2,795 unlocked vehicles. That's about one gun for each 10 vehicles. "Those cases are particularly problematic and concerning for police, as many of these weapons end up in the wrong hands and become instrumental in violent crimes," said Maj. Mike Balken, head of the Ocala Police Department's Major Crimes Bureau. |

Sales of guns and ammunition in the United States "have dropped precipitously since Election Day," The Washington Post reports, but some gun dealers, like Cleveland's Kevin Jones, are having a very different experience. The reason, The Post says: "Gun clubs and shops that cater to black and LGBT clients say there has been an uptick in interest in firearms since November among those who fear that racial and gender-based violence could increase during Donald Trump's presidency." |

In most states, gun stores don't have to beef up security like locking up guns after hours. But since the government started keeping track in 2012, gun store break-ins have been increasing. In 2016, break-ins were at an all time high. In 2012 there were 4,340 guns stolen during burglaries. In 2016, there were 7,488 up 30 percent from 2015.

Superior Court Judge T. The allure of the .257 Roberts hit me early and lasted long. I’ve owned a dozen or more rifles chambered in that cartridge. The problem was, I never had one I really liked. And, I never owned one that shot outstandingly well. One problem with the “Bob” as it is often called, is that factory ammunition is loaded to an anemic level. This is because early on when the .257 Roberts was in its wildcat stage, before Remington legitimized it in 1934, lots of rifles of questionable strength were chambered for it. Because of this, SAAMI – the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute – mandated .257 Roberts operating pressures be kept low.
