As the old adage goes, “When seconds count, police are minutes away.”
That is the harsh reality when it comes to school shootings. In the vast majority of instances, the gunfire is over within 3 to 5 minutes of the first bullet fired. It typically takes law enforcement officers longer than that to arrive on scene.
When a school shooting is in progress, the best line of defense is to have a highly trained, armed individual already in the building who is willing to take action to protect students.
I’m currently drafting legislation to provide an exemption under Michigan’s concealed carry laws giving specially trained school employees the option to keep firearms secured inside restricted school zones to use for emergency purposes.

Updated: An Oregon 20-year-old has filed lawsuits against Walmart and Dick’s Sporting Goods, alleging age discrimination after he tried unsuccessfully to purchase rifles after the stores announced last week they would not sell long guns to anyone under age 21, according to Willamette Week, a Portland-based alternative newspaper.
The lawsuits were revealed almost simultaneously to Liberty Park Press’ headline story that asked whether the stores’ anti-gun sales restrictions violate anti-discrimination laws. In Oregon, that might be the case, since state law allows firearms purchases by young adults ages 18-20, which is also allowed under federal law. |

The village of Deerfield may follow the lead of neighboring Highland Park and ban the kind of rapid-fire weapons that were used in the Feb. 14 mass shooting at a Florida high school and recent massacres at a church in Texas, a Las Vegas concert and an Orlando nightclub. A proposed ban of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines received unanimous support from Deerfield trustees Monday night in the first formal action taken on the measure.

Gov. Henry McMaster and President Donald Trump have voiced support for arming teachers, but the chairwoman of a state House panel that is considering such a bill says she does not believe that is to come. Rep. Rita Allison, a Spartanburg County Republican and chairwoman of the House Education and Public Works Committee, said she believes House lawmakers are more interested in placing an officer in every school and securing front entrances to increase safety and thwart school shootings. |

It’s appalling that big-box stores and outdoor retailers are imposing more stringent rules on gun sales than Washington’s Democratic-controlled state Legislature. But that is exactly what is happening as state lawmakers tiptoe away from minimal gun-control measures in the final days of their 60-day session in Olympia. Since the Feb. 14 school shooting that claimed 17 lives in Parkland, Florida, Walmart has announced it will no longer sell guns to anyone under 21. Kroger, L.L. Bean and Dick’s Sporting Goods have done the same. |

Gun buybacks are used by law enforcement across the state to get guns out of homes off the streets, but one state assemblywoman says there's a problem with one aspect of the program and has introduced a bill to change it. A recent gun buyback in San Diego was so popular law enforcement had to turn away people because they ran out of gift cards, but the type of gift cards authorities were using to pay people at that buyback caught the attention of State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher, D-San Diego. |

Amid a growing clamor for action to address a rash of mass shootings, Sen. Ted Cruz pushed back hard Tuesday against demands for restrictions on assault weapons, calling instead for a fresh look at a bill aimed at keeping guns away from criminals. "If the objective is to stop violent crime, we should focus on stopping the violent criminals and rapists and murderers," he said in a call with reporters as Texans go to the polls on primary day. "Texans want to stop the criminals. Texans do not want Washington politicians disarming law-abiding citizens." |

Two new measures have appeared at the state Capitol that aim to make schools safer in light of mass killings at a Florida school and elsewhere. But the resolutions, introduced by House and Senate Republicans, don't address the availability of guns. The state Capitol upgraded its security this past winter – enhancing the banks of metal detectors that already make the seat of state government a gun-free zone. Airports have had tighter security ever since 9/11 – designed to keep guns and other weapons off of commercial airliners.

Delaware lawmakers are returning to this year's legislative session with a number of gun control measures, including a proposal to raise the minimum age to purchase a gun or ammunition to 21 years old. House Bill 330 would set the minimum age requirement for whom a person can sell, give, or transfer a firearm or ammunition for a firearm at 21 years old, the earliest age someone is already able to buy a handgun in Delaware. An amendment filed Tuesday would carve out exceptions for active service members and qualified law enforcement officer and excludes the restriction from applying to bows.

Students, teachers and parents from across Washington came to the Capitol Campus Tuesday to show support for a bill that would restrict access to semi-automatic rifles. The rally — just a few days before the Legislature will adjourn — marked the latest outcry in Washington over a string of school shootings in recent years that have claimed the lives of hundreds of people across the country. The most recent of those shootings occurred last month when 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida. |

House lawmakers on Tuesday approved legislation that would expand civil lawsuit immunity to Oklahoma churches when someone uses a gun or other deadly force in self-defense. State law — known as the "Stand Your Ground Law" — already shields businesses and property from lawsuits stemming from an accidental injury or death by someone who was acting in self-defense on that property. House Bill 2632 adds "place of worship" to the list. |

A few months after my father left our family home for good, my mother heard me screaming in the middle of the night. It was the kind of scream that made her grab her rifle in one hand and some ammo in another. It was a spring night and I was sleeping with my window open, which was right above my bed; I loved breathing in the fresh air. That night, in that open window, I heard the banging of a ladder, and by the time my mother made it into the room and began loading her gun, a man was about to climb in. |
