A resolution to be considered by the full Mason County Board of Commissioners in regard to Second Amendment support and rights won’t be at the March meeting following action Thursday in a committee meeting.

The Finance, Personnel and Rules Committee met Thursday morning to review a draft resolution in regard to the Second Amendment Sanctuary County movement. The movement has asked counties across the state to adopt a resolution to affirm the rights under the amendment and encourage officials not to enforce or adopt laws that would restrict those rights.

Missaukee County Commissioner Pamela Niebrzydowski isn’t afraid of the internet.

So said the commissioner, who represents Lake City and Forest Township, in response to an observation that communities that passed altered “Second Amendment Sanctuary‘ resolutions were being “roasted‘ online.

County commissioners passed a resolution in support of the Second Amendment on Thursday but declined to use language describing the county as a “sanctuary.‘

Missaukee County commissioners were first asked in February to pass a so-called “Second Amendment Sanctuary‘ resolution but tabled the discussion until all commissioners could be present to weigh in on the language.

The Akron rifle team is usually ranked in the top 15 in country. Always a good program, they had never been able to crack the NCAA tournament. This year, they have. The top eight teams go, and the Zips have spent the entire year ranked in the top five. “Everybody started just working together as a team,” said Wyatt Openshaw, a junior at Akron. “Before, everybody might have had their own thing going on.”

As one of six seniors on the team, Lauryn Cinadr definitely sees a difference. “This past weekend I didn’t shoot my best smallbore, but our team came together. They were like ‘I know that wasn’t your best, but there is another day.’ The next day, the air rifle day, we killed a team record."

Prosecutors said a St. Louis Pizza Hut worker acted in self-defense when he stabbed a customer who had threatened him with a knife during a confrontation about an order.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Allison Hawk told the Associated Press on Friday the customer showed up at the restaurant Monday angry and ready to fight. Hawk said the man got the workers to go outside, where he drew a knife and told them he also had a gun.

Hawk said one of the workers then stabbed the customer several times with a kitchen knife. Police said Friday the man is expected to survive.

Mark Robinson’s impassioned defense of gun rights to a North Carolina city council that went viral has catapulted the former furniture factory worker to the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in less than two years.

Robinson, a first-time candidate, got the most votes among the nine-person field in Tuesday’s primary. Unofficial results show his 32.5% total more than doubled second-place finisher Andy Wells and exceeded the 30% threshold to avoid a runoff.

What If the Court Saw Other Rights as Generously as Gun Rights?

This is an essay about two words no one wants to see in the same story: guns and schools. But this isn’t about school shootings. This is instead about two starkly different social-activist groups: gun-rights proponents and educational-equity advocates. It’s about their steadfast pursuit of wildly divergent civil rights. It’s about a surprising similarity in their legal strategies. And more than anything, it’s a story about law and ideology, and the difficulty of deciding the former without the influence of the latter.

Bans on so-called “assault weapons” have no direct impact on mass shootings, concluded the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in a study published in a February issue of the Criminology & Public Policy journal.

Researchers looked at fatal mass shootings involving four or more victims in 45 states between 1984 and 2017 and at the firearms laws for those states. Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska and Montana were excluded from the analysis due to “significant gaps in reporting.” Additionally, all murders related to gang or narcotic activity were excluded.

Colorado gun owners could soon be required to report within 48 hours if their firearm is lost or stolen or face a small penalty under a new bill expected to be introduced late Friday. Democratic backers say the goal is to educate gun owners to be more aware and responsible for their weapons.

Another soon to be introduced measure would make failure to store a gun safely against the law.

These are the first gun proposals of the session from Democrats, who hold the majority in both chambers of the state legislature. Lawmakers had a robust debate in the last session over 2nd Amendment rights and public safety following the passage of the so-called ‘red flag’ gun law in 2019.

OR: Oregon Legislature Closes. Ballot Measure Updates

As you know, Oregon Firearms Federation (OFF) challenged the ballot title for IP 40. This ballot measure (it is not a legislative bill) would require that you keep your self-defense firearms locked up and useless.

It would hold you “strictly liable” for misuse of your guns by other people. (Challenges were filed by both OFF and the NRA.)

Today the Oregon Supreme Court responded with an opinion that agreed in large part with our arguments.
That opinion can be seen here. This is a positive development because now, should this measure make the ballot, Oregon voters will have a clearer idea of how bad it is.

I would like to respond to Mr. Holcomb’s claim that I’m a right-wing fringe activist and that our Marquette County officials did the right thing.

Let me begin by saying that I, along with my father, all of my uncles and my son, also are veterans. As such we took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. An oath has no expiration date.

That being said, I do not see anywhere in the Constitution where I am guilty until proven innocent, or what kind of weapon I can or cannot use to defend myself and my family.

House Bill 118, the Second Amendment Preservation Act, continues to move through the Wyoming Legislature and was placed on the general file in the Senate Wednesday after passing with a Senate Judiciary Committee recommendation.

The bill defines objections to federal actions and defines certain federal laws, acts, executive orders, administrative orders, court orders, taxes, levies, fees, tracking methods and regulations as infringements on a law abiding citizen’s right to keep and bear arms. A law abiding citizen is defined in the bill as a person not engaged in criminal activity.

The city of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee, is among a growing number of municipalities and counties across the nation to pass a resolution declaring itself a "Second Amendment sanctuary."

"It's a lengthy exposition of law and the right to bear arms," said City Attorney Sam Elliott of the city's resolution, which he drafted at the request of Vice Mayor Robert Cothran.

The resolution passed unanimously at the board of commissioners' March 5 meeting.

Elliott said that the resolution is not a change in law.

There are many ways legislation can affect our Second Amendment rights. Some of the effects are very direct – bans on modern multi-purpose semi-automatic firearms being one of the most prominent proposals out there. But others will not directly touch on gun laws at all.

One of the latter bills is HR 3665, the School Violence Prevention and Mitigation Act of 2019, introduced by Representative Roger Williams (R-TX). This bill doesn’t change gun laws one way or another, but Second Amendment supporters should not just follow the progress of this bill but support its passage, even though the lead co-sponsor has a poor track record on Second Amendment rights.

A brief attempt to re-approach the use of “sanctuary” in St. Clair County’s recently-passed Second Amendment resolution failed this week.

Commissioner David Rushing asked to put the idea on the board’s agenda for the judiciary and public safety committee Thursday a month after the board first approved a resolution supporting local gun rights without the word. It was the same agenda Thursday where commissioners also discussed repeal of a weapons ban on county property.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
You are bound to meet misfortune if you are unarmed because, among other reasons, people despise you....There is simply no comparison between a man who is armed and one who is not. It is unreasonable to expect that an armed man should obey one who is unarmed, or that an unarmed man should remain safe and secure when his servants are armed. In the latter case, there will be suspicion on the one hand and contempt on the other, making cooperation impossible. — Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."
