A local voice will serve on a national non-partisan coalition for responsible weapons use.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley serves on the advisory committee of the Law Enforcement Coalition for Common Sense, an initiative started by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly. Twenty law enforcement officers from across the country serve on the advisory committee, of which Hadley is the sole Michigan representative.
The coalition is an initiative of Americans for Responsible Solutions, which was organized by Giffords in 2013 after 26 children were killed in shooting at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school, and two years after she survived a 2011 assassination attempt in Tuscon, Ariz. |

There are many other bills that will be brought to the House in the next few weeks that are very deserving. Bills such as voter integrity and modernization and the new gun legislation that returns rights back to Iowans that have been steadily whittled away. In addition, we continue to work on school flexibility and protecting Iowans from dangerous synthetic drugs. |

A sweeping gun bill headed to the Iowa Senate would allow Iowans to use deadly force in public, if necessary.
Polk County attorney John Sarcone said the bill will “legalize murder” if it becomes law. Those in favor of stand-your-ground said it respects Iowans right to protect themselves.
“I have been to almost every homicide scene in this county for almost 26 years,” Sarcone said.
Sarcone said he has seen enough violence and does not want to see more, but he worries that a new "stand-your-ground” law will escalate it. |

In what police describe as an “extremely random” attack, a 42-year-old Richmond man was shot in the chest early Wednesday morning while allegedly attempting to break into a neighboring apartment on Post Road.

A bill unveiled during the 2017 general session of the Utah Legislature that would clarify a person in Utah is lawfully allowed to defend themselves if attacked and not legally required to retreat from an aggressor even if there is a safe place to retreat to appears to have stalled in the Senate.
The proposed Duty to Retreat Amendments, designated as HB 259 and sponsored by Rep. A. Cory Maloy of Lehi, would have made it illegal for prosecutors to argue that a person who uses deadly force in an act of self-defense should have taken the opportunity to run instead. |

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox took to NRATV’s Stinchfield Wednesday to condemn the liberal policies that raise the price of using a firearm and limit Americans’ ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights.
“Imagine if they tried to do that to the First Amendment, tried to do that to your ability to worship the God of your choice—that you’re going to have to pay in order to do those sorts of things,” Cox said. “This is a poll tax. It’s designed to prevent people from owning and exercising firearms.” |

Last fall, Ruger introduced three new semi-autos in the space of two weeks. The pistols were parceled out to three of us staff writers with my assignment being the American Compact 9, a downsized version of the full-sized American introduced two years ago. The new Compact is easier to conceal and an excellent choice for self-defense. |

Two gun bills making their way through the Minnesota legislature are raising concerns among some in the law and law enforcement community.
One of the bills would do away with permit to carry. The other would redefine self-defense laws. Nearly every person who testified for over two hours on Wednesday about the two gun bills was against them, including the police chiefs association and the county attorneys association.
Both the committee room and the overflow room a floor above were filled to capacity with both passionate opponents and power supporters. |

A California county's limitation on a gun restriction rule violates a law-abiding citizen's right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside their home, Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge said Wednesday.
Rutledge has filed an amicus brief, or friend of the court brief, in the United States Supreme Court, asking justices to hear an appeal of the San Diego County rule. |

Approved Wednesday by the House Judiciary Committee, the legislation says someone injured by another person with a firearm cannot sue a business that allows weapons inside, unless there is a proof the business owner “intends to cause injury or acts with gross negligence.” But if there is a “no guns” sign at the door, the business can be held liable for simple negligence.
Dave Kopp, lobbyist for the Arizona Citizens Defense League, said the disparate treatment is justified. In telling their customers they cannot bring in their own guns, businesses are accepting some responsibility for their safety, he said. |

A firearms instructor is offering Albuquerque cab drivers discounted concealed carry courses after one driver was carjacked and murdered last week.
KOAT reports that John Keel — former serviceman and cab driver, now a security guard and firearms instructor — is offering $50 concealed carry courses to all cab drivers in New Mexico’s largest city. That is about a $100-150 discount.
“Firearms are, you know, they’re a tool,” Keel said. “They’re a tool for self-defense.” |

Teton County School District’s board of trustees could vote to allow employees with concealed weapons permits to carry firearms on school property under a law expected to be signed by Gov. Matt Mead.
House Bill 194, which the Wyoming Legislature passed March 1, says school districts across the state will have the power to allow possession of firearms by school district employees on school property, effective in July. The definition of employee includes people like superintendents, principals, teachers, coaches, secretaries, janitors, bus drivers and volunteers. |

The National Instant background Check System, (NICS), showed that the numbers for February, 2017 were 2,234,817. That is the third highest number of NICS checks for any February. The highest was in 2016, with 2,613,074. The second highest February was in 2013, with 2,309,393. Both of those were driven by fear of strong gun control measures that might be passed by President Obama and Congress.
The Trump era of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks is off to a good start. There have been four presidents that have had NICS checks done while they were in office. |

Madison Mayor Paul Soglin is firing blanks if he thinks he can persuade the Legislature to give him and other city leaders the authority to prohibit guns on buses, Republican lawmakers told The Associated Press.
The state Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down Madison's policy banning guns on city buses. Gun rights groups cheered the decision. But not Soglin.
The mayor said at a news conference hours after the ruling that he'll ask the Legislature to change the state's concealed-carry law to allow cities to ban weapons on buses. But the gun-friendly Republicans who hold record majorities in the Legislature immediately shot down the idea. |

Remington Arms has laid off 122 employees.
Village officials are calling it a "reflection on the economy."
Ilion Mayor Terry Leonard told Eyewitness News he has been informed by management at the plant that the move is the result of low sales. Remington Arms has seen periodic layoffs in the past.but some of those let go were brought back when sales picked up.
Roughly 960 employees remain on the job at America's oldest gun manufacture,which is also the village's largest employer. |

Norman pointed to the number of homicides in the city of Baltimore as a reason to expand access to permits. “I would suggest that’s a reason to have a permit,” he said.
But Jen Pauliukonis, president of Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence, said lowering the state’s standard to “self-defense” would essentially turn Maryland into a “shall issue” state, she said.
Based on the number of new permit applications in Wisconsin after gun laws were expanded there, the Maryland Department of Legislative Services estimated that 100,000 new permit applications would be filed if the bill from Salling and Norman passes.

President of Crime Prevention Research Center Dr. John Lott, Jr., is blasting lawmakers for raising handgun permit fees in Connecticut, arguing the hikes will endanger the poor who may no longer be able to afford guns.
In a Hartford Courant opinion piece, Lott calls out Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy for proposing to raise initial handgun permit fees from $140 to $370, which would be the highest initial fee in the country. There would also be a $300 renewal fee gun owners would have to pay every five years. |

Corban’s message is indeed a unique one. On top of being a voice for victims of sexual assault, and a strong line of support, Corban is also a strong advocate of the Second Amendment, and often stresses the importance of women utilizing that right to better defend themselves. In fact, her advocacy was such that she and then President Barack Obama had a back and forth over it on television.
Despite this, Corban isn’t turning this into a focus on firearms, but of defense against occurrences like hers.
“I know for a fact that some expected a crazy gun crowd,” Corban told TheBlaze. “A woman was surprised to find it’s not what I was.” |

A bill to allow some people to carry concealed handguns on state college campuses remained stalled Wednesday in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but a senator said he will seek to amend the bill on the Senate floor.
Also Wednesday, the panel rejected a bill by Sen. Terry Rice, R-Waldron, on open carry of handguns.
House Bill 1249 by Rep. Charlie Collins, R-Fayetteville, passed in the House last month but has floundered since reaching the Senate. In its current form, the bill would allow any person age 25 or older who has a concealed-carry permit to receive up to 16 hours of additional training and qualify for an endorsement allowing him or her to carry a handgun on a college campus. |

Gun rights supporters and gun control advocates debated two bills at the Capitol Wednesday. One would eliminate the state's permit-to-carry requirement and the other would expand a person's right to use deadly force in self-defense.
Under current law, Minnesotans need to be trained by a certified instructor before they can get a permit to carry a handgun. Opponents of the proposal to eliminate that requirement said it makes no sense to allow people to carry guns in public without first undergoing training.

What do you call a regulation that summarily deprives law-abiding Americans of their Second Amendment rights without any evidence that they pose a danger to others?
If you are a New York Times editorialist, you call it “sensible.”
That was the newspaper’s take on a Social Security Administration rule that Congress canceled with a bill President Donald Trump signed last week. The objections aroused by the rule’s demise show that its supporters do not understand it, do not value the constitutional right to arms — or both. |
