"Business travel groups, security experts and privacy advocates are looking to derail a government plan to insert remotely readable chips in American passports, calling the chips homing devices for high-tech muggers, identity thieves and even terrorists."
"But the U.S. State Department, which plans to start issuing the new passports to citizens later this year, says its critics are overstating the risks. Officials say that the chips will cut down on passport forgery, improve security and speed up border crossings." |

"Hundreds of volunteers, some of them armed, are expected to take up positions along the Mexican border Friday and begin patrolling for illegal immigrants — an exercise some fear could attract racist crackpots and lead to vigilante violence."
"Organizers of the Minuteman Project said the civilian volunteers, many of whom were recruited over the Internet , will meet first for a rally in this one-time silver mining town, then fan out across 23 miles of the San Pedro Valley to watch the border for a month and report sightings of illegal activity to Border Patrol agents." |

"Not only would well-armed teachers improve safety, they would be more effective educators. Kindergartners, for example, often need help maintaining the concentration necessary to master skills such as counting. In the typical kindergarten class, tykes are bouncing all over the place, fascinated by a dried-out bug they discovered in the carpet pile or poking crayons into their button noses. To gain their interest, the properly armed kindergarten teacher merely need stride into the center of the classroom and unleash a barrage from a.44 Magnum."
"Once the children have stopped slurping the Elmer's and turned their attention to the teacher, she can proceed with the lesson by throwing down a loaded shotgun and challenging little Jimmy to pick it up. The lesson plan might include this math-based question:"
"I know what you're thinking. Did she fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a.44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"

"The judicial system should allow for more creativity in meting out punishment for violent crimes augmented by guns. If vicious murderers will not be handed a death sentence, then they should be sent to a war zone, for instance, where U.S. military forces are present, if they want to shoot, especially young urban terrorists with their finger perpetually on the trigger."
"The killing fields of Iraq would be a good place to drop off urban gunslingers convicted of murder. It makes little sense to continue sending these violent perpetrators to prison; that's where they hone their morbid tendencies funded by public taxes – yours and mine." |
