The American firearms industry is as healthy as ever, seeing an unprecedented surge that has sent production of guns soaring to more than 10.8 million manufactured in 2013 alone — double the total of just three years earlier. The 2013 surge — the latest for which the government has figures — came in the first full year after the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, signaling that the push for stricter gun controls, strongly backed by President Obama, did little to chill the industry despite the passage of stricter laws in states such as New York, Maryland, Connecticut and California.

The Baltimore Police Department has used an invasive and controversial cellphone tracking device thousands of times in recent years while following instructions from the FBI to withhold information about it from prosecutors and judges, a detective revealed in court testimony Wednesday. The testimony shows for the first time how frequently city police are using a cell site simulator, more commonly known as a "stingray," a technology that authorities have gone to great lengths to avoid disclosing. The device mimics a cellphone tower to force phones within its range to connect. Police use it to track down stolen phones or find people.

In August of 2014, military helicopters flew low over residential neighborhoods of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, engaged in a series of night-time training exercises. The exercises involved the Naval Warfare Development Group - a "special forces" component of the U.S. Navy - and were aimed at enhancing urban combat tactics. Just as they had two years earlier, military personnel had come to the Twin Cities to conduct counter-terrorism training operations in an urban environment. And just as before, those operations commenced with little advance notice to the public. |

One of the most important figures in the civil-rights movement was stopped from speaking at the historic March on Washington and has spent the last half-century in virtual obscurity.
But a month before that 1963 march, it was Gloria Richardson, a full-time mother who kept guns in her house, seated next to U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy during the signing of the historic "Treaty of Cambridge." |

A measure that would allow people without concealed-weapons permits to pocket their legally owned guns during a declared emergency is now headed to the governor.
The House voted 86-26 on Thursday to approve a proposal (SB 290) that would allow people to carry guns without concealed-weapons licenses for 48 hours during mandatory emergency evacuations. The bill would only apply to people who legally own guns.

The National Rifle Association’s annual convention kicks off in Music City Friday morning with more than 70,000 people expected to attend the weekend long event.
Approximately 550 vendors will be set up inside the Music City Center in downtown Nashville. An additional 100 exhibitors are on a waiting list to get in, according to an NRA spokesperson.
This year many of those vendors and manufacturers are trying to appeal to women. Everything from pink guns to hunting and outdoor gear designed to fit women will be available for purchase. |

The Senate likely will not move forward with a controversial measure that would allow people with concealed-weapons licenses to carry guns on the campuses of Florida colleges and universities.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Miami, said Thursday he doesn’t plan to have the proposal (SB 176) go before his committee, which would effectively kill the bill.
“I’ve polled the members of the Senate, and there doesn’t seem to be too much support for that bill,” said Diaz de la Portilla, whose office has been getting calls from Second Amendment advocates about the measure.

Ah, tax time! Forking over between 10 percent and 40 percent of our “income” — as the thieves define it — hardly stings because we know our rulers spend the loot wisely.
For example, there’s the Transportation Security Administration. It has gobbled an average of $7.4 billion per year since it spawned in 2002. And how many terrorists has that inconceivable fortune caught? Not a single one (unless we count Ted Kennedy, and believe me, I’m open to doing so). Instead, it’s bought passengers $96-billion worth of delays, bullying and sexual assaults. |

Daily Beast explores some arcane, to non-insiders, gun rights movement politics to explain why the National Rifle Association (NRA) is being mean to a candidate who is as pro-Second Amendment as they come, Rand Paul.
Roughly, in case you didn't know, to many in that world, the NRA are the squishy equivocators of gun rights, and Paul is affiliated with some more hardcore ones in perceived war with the NRA.

“The interesting thing is that there’s probably no greater advocate for the Second Amendment in Congress than myself,” Paul told Bloomberg. “To not be invited, probably, will serve more to cast aspersions on their group than it would on me. Because my record’s pretty clear. It probably looks a little bit petty for them not to invite a major candidate because I raised money for other Second Amendment groups.” |

Cherished family heirlooms were among the 21 firearms Michael Roberts surrendered to the Torrance Police Department in 2010, after his doctor filed a restraining order against him.
The court order was the result of a dispute Roberts had with a member of the doctor’s staff and, after Roberts pleaded no contest, the matter was resolved. Yet, even though he filed the proper Law Enforcement Gun Release paperwork on four separate occasions, obtained clearance from the California Department of Justice and had two court orders commanding the return of his guns, police refused to hand them over. |

This is a new wrinkle on attacks that can happen in and around your vehicle. Car jackings have been around for decades as have bump and robs. More unusual is the robber impersonating a cop and pulling you over. This article highlights a south-of-the-boarder robbery tactic springing up in Chicago.

The gun lobby marshaled thousands of comments from gun owners and sparked an outcry in Congress last month to defeat a regulatory proposal that would have banned a certain type of ammunition, but the fight rages on at the Music City Center.
As the National Rifle Association opens the doors to 70,000 gun enthusiasts in downtown Nashville, the short but intense dispute over the M855 ammunition is exhibit A in the NRA's convention theme that the federal government is a threat to Second Amendment rights. |

For now we need you to remain patient. Our volunteer lobbyists continue to work daily to get the Omnibus Gun Bill the vote it deserves. Right now they’re telling us they need time to do their thing and as soon as it’s time to turn up the pressure on the Senate they’ll put out the signal and we’ll relay the message that it’s time to go to work. We’ve had a few bumps in the road recently, but we’re still sitting in a very good spot (this is politics after all, and things rarely ever go smoothly). |

But the National Rifle Association’s relentless lobbying for looser gun laws has a side effect. Its attempt to normalize guns as a part of daily life in America has led to a casual attitude resulting in an astonishing number of deaths and injuries because of improper handling or storage of guns, or because of just plain foolishness on the part of gun owners. These are not crimes, but accidents. Accidental discharges in public places: stores, hotel rooms, restrooms, even gun shows. People showing off “toys” and accidentally shooting themselves or a friend. Children finding guns at home with tragic results. |

As Maine held an April 8 legislative hearing on Senator Eric Brakey’s (R-Auburn) proposal to abolish the concealed carry permit requirement for that state, one thing was for sure—Maine State Police support Brakey’s proposal.
According to WCSH 6, residents of Maine packed the Augusta State House to support Brakey’s contention that having a concealed carry permit requirement in an open carry state is the same thing as punishing concealed carriers.
They pointed out how people who want to legally carry a concealed handgun have to apply for a license and literally wait to receive a document from the government before they can exercise their Second Amendment rights. |
