The firearms industry is an important component of the U.S. economy, contributing some $51 billion to total economic activity in the country. It also supplied over 300,000 jobs that paid on average more than $50,000 annually, which is why more than a few states might be very concerned about the slowdown in gun sales underway.

The U.S. Army appears to be headed back towards adopting a new "battle rifle" firing a 7.62 mm round to win firefights against Chinese and Russian troops equipped with assault rifles and machine guns firing this larger round. The last U.S. Army battle rifle that fired a 7.62 mm round was the heavy M14, which was the standard issue infantry rifle from 1959 to 1964 when the M16 automatic rifle began replacing it. The M14 fired a 7.62×51mm NATO round compared to the M16's 5.56x45mm NATO.

Sturm, Ruger & Company (NYSE: RGR) and Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-A) (NYSE: BF-B) are both classic American businesses. Sturm, Ruger started selling guns 68 years ago, and Brown-Forman started selling whiskey 147 years ago. It's often said that America was raised on guns and whiskey, but which of these stocks can thrive in a world with tighter gun controls and declining alcohol consumption? Let's compare both companies' business models, growth trajectories, and valuations to find out.

A man who was shot in January during a deadly home invasion has been charged with murder. The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says 28-year-old Eric Howard told deputies that 33-year-old Robert Ingram contacted him on Jan. 7, threatening to come to his Reidland home and assault him. Deputies said Ingram and 39-year-old Toby Reed later came to Howard's home and kicked in his door. Howard told deputies he barricaded his door after Ingram threatened him, and when the two men got inside he shot them both.

Dalton State College student Rick Williams said it's not hard to imagine a gunman suddenly attacking the campus because he's seen so much news footage of the same on other college campuses. What's is hard to imagine, he said, is how people might react. "I support gun rights and all that, but I just don't know if a bunch of students running around with guns would really help out," said Williams, referring to the "campus carry" law passed by the state Legislature that is now before Gov. Nathan Deal.

Montana is known for its millions of acres of preserved land, sweeping from the mountains across the badlands, and has earned the nickname “the last best place.” Living in the ultimate destination for sportsmen and sportswomen, most Montanans, including my daughter, whose father is an avid hunter, grew up in a gun-owning household. We value responsibility, community and hard work. As a native Montanan, I’m proud to be a small-business owner – contributing to our thriving community and serving up some of the best cuisine you’ll have around town.

If there’s anything gun control advocates and Second Amendment supporters can agree on it’s that 10 years after the Virginia Tech shooting, most gun legislation introduced in the commonwealth goes nowhere.

After the 2007 mass shooting, Virginia politicians acted quickly to eliminate a disconnect between the state’s courts system and the criminal records exchange in regard to mental health information—fixing a loophole shooter Seung-Hui Cho slipped through to buy two pistols.

The next time you visit your local sporting goods store take a moment and stroll down the ammunition aisle. If you haven’t been to that section of the store in some time, prepare to be pleasantly shocked and amazed. The shelves that only recently stored more dust than merchandise are now brimming with hundreds, even thousands of boxes of rimfire, shotgun, and centerfire pistol and rifle ammunition of every caliber, gauge, and description.

If you ever dreamed of living in the old west with its paucity of rules on when and where you could draw your gun, it looks like you may get your wish soon in Iowa. Iowa’s legislature overwhelmingly passed the cancer that has spread across the country known as “Stand Your Ground” laws. The main reason for these laws appears to be to kowtow to the gun industry and sell more and more guns in a society already awash in guns.

It's a “scam.” That's what an Iowa lawmaker called a well-known gun rights group at the state Capitol on Thursday. Addressing the Iowa House following the debate on the recent gun bill, state Rep. Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley, gave the Des Moines-based Iowa Gun Owners group some impassioned criticism. "Iowans are being lied to," Windschitl said while on the House floor. “The average individual citizen out there, that wants to see Second Amendment rights advance in the state, those are the people being lied to.”

A nationwide manhunt is on for a Wisconsin man wanted for a series of crimes including stealing over a dozen guns and allegedly plotting mass violence targeting law enforcement and political figures. Over 150 police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and federal agents are on the trail of Joseph Jakubowski, who Wisconsin authorities say is considered “armed and highly dangerous” after he allegedly burglarized a local gun store in Janesville, a city roughly 40 miles south of Madison. Among the 16 weapons stolen were several high caliber handguns, and at least two semi-automatic assault rifles. Police also believe he may possess a bulletproof vest and military-style helmet.

Louisiana students, technically as young as kindergarteners, who bring toy guns to school could face criminal penalties under a proposal state lawmakers will consider during a session that begins Monday.

House Bill 43, by Rep. Dodie Horton, R-Haughton, would ban the possession of “imitation firearms, projectiles or ammunition” in Louisiana schools, at school-sponsored events or within 1,000 feet of campuses. It includes BB guns, firearm replicas, CO2 propellant guns and other firearm devices that are “substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is a firearm.”

On April 7 the NRA made clear Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) can count on facing an advertising onslaught during his re-election campaign because of his decision to vote against the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch. Tester is one of the red state Democrats whom the NRA put on notice prior to the confirmation vote. On March 23 Breitbart News reported NRA warnings that red state Democrats voting against Gorsuch would not only find themselves campaigning against a Republican challenger for re-election but against the NRA as well. Tester can now count on the NRA opposition.

We’ve determined that we are obsessed. Just back from USPSA Optics Nationals, perhaps you can understand and pardon our affliction, at least a little. The upside is we’ve got another project that you’ll be able to pick over, and maybe move something of your own along. We’ll have plenty of fun, at any rate.

As annual tax day approaches, I am reminded of how much we sportsmen spend on wildlife conservation.

Using my own records as an example, I paid the following fees to be able to participate in some Ohio outdoor sports: General hunting license ($19), two deer tags ($48), Ohio Wetlands Habitat stamp ($15), Federal Duck stamp ($25), Ohio Fishing license ($19) and voluntarily purchased two Ohio Wildlife Legacy stamps ($30) for a total of $156.

With a relatively early spring and most snow now gone in Minnesota's turkey-hunting range, turkey hunters are optimistic about their prospects. It's a fair bet that some turkey hunters are practicing their yelps with diaphragm-style calls — hands-free, of course — on their daily commutes.
