Firearms are responsible for more deaths of people age 1 to 24 in this country than are cancers, heart disease, or infections. We and other physician colleagues across the Commonwealth thank The Boston Globe (“Doctors should ask about guns,” Editorial, April 3) and Attorney General Maura Healey for their recognition that health professionals have a profound responsibility to discuss the devastating risks posed by firearms in our homes and communities.

It is easy to say that someone’s passing marks the end of an era. Truly, though, the passing last month of Bradford gunsmith, Bill Morrison, at age 94, without a doubt marks the closing chapter of his unique breed of craftsman. When it came to guns, repairing them, creating them, and appreciating them, Morrison was, in the eyes of his customers and friends, an icon. Some contend that he was the best gunsmith in New England, if not the country.

On April 6, a custom machine shop in Odessa, Texas, released photos of a Glock handgun it reworked to look like the pistol used in Nintendo’s “Duck Hunt.” The machine shop that recreated the Nintendo gun is Precision Syndicate, LLC. They announced the gun on Facebook, writing, “Finally… We were waiting for someone to let us do this. We weren’t the first to do it but WOW, this Glock turned out good!”

To Mike Coombs, owner of Seattle’s Outdoor Emporium, a hunting, fishing and camping store, the city’s gun tax is unfair and aimed at driving him out of the city, if not out of business. To Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess, the tax is a good way to fund medical research on reducing gun- violence injuries.
The two represent opposing poles in the debate over Seattle’s tax on guns and ammunition that took effect Jan. 1 and puts this city at the center of a dispute over whether municipalities can tax firearms or whether states alone have the power to regulate and tax guns.

Collecting guns is all about keeping a piece of history alive. At least, that’s how Joe Key, 35, Anderson, sees it. And he plans to do just that as the new owner of Crack Shot Guns, 715 E. 53rd St. Key purchased the 33-year-old store earlier this year, in what he calls his “biggest gun purchase yet,” from the same person he bought his very first firearm from 17 years ago, longtime gunsmith Mike Clevenger.

The Baltimore Sun analyzed data on the use of Tasers from 2012 to 2014. It found that Baltimore police used Tasers in nearly all cases with suspects who ignore orders, but otherwise were not deemed a threat. In Baltimore, most of the suspects who were stunned were black and two thirds occurred in the city’s lowest media income neighborhoods.

Paul Helmke is convinced that he still can call himself a Republican and a gun-control advocate. It’s getting harder. As the presidential primary unfolds with GOP candidates competing hard for the gun vote, Helmke said he’s witnessing a disappearance of Republican leaders willing to advocate what he calls “common sense” gun laws.

Once a rarity on campuses, semi-automatic rifles are becoming a standard part of the arsenal for college security forces — firepower they say could make a difference the next time a gunman goes on a rampage. The weapons are rarely seen in public and often kept stashed in cruisers or department headquarters, and many schools won’t talk about them. But federal data and Associated Press interviews and requests for records reveal that at least 100 U.S. college police forces, and probably many more, have added rifles over the past decade.

Last week, a letter writer to the Knoxville (TN) News-Sentinel, noted that "Guns creep me out." He especially doesn't like to see them in parks. . .

. . .I'd just bet that if someone attacked him in a park, and he had the opportunity, he would call the po-po.

. . .And the po-po would come running with GUNS.

One thing that has become increasingly clear in this increasingly muddled 2016 presidential campaign is that if either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump — and you can throw Bernie Sanders into that mix — actually take out a mortgage on the White House for the next four years civil liberties will be on life support.

It wasn't the hardest phone call I've ever made, but it was certainly awkward. I was cold-calling the National Rifle Association. Because the NRA is well-known for offering gun safety training, I wanted to know whether the organization had ideas on how to reduce the number of firearm suicides. Half of all suicides in the United States are by firearm, and roughly two-thirds of all firearm deaths are suicides. Given the NRA's opposition to virtually all gun regulation, I knew this was a touchy area.

In the past three months, Pennsylvania residents have tried to buy 97 firearms every hour. Additionally, the number of requests this quarter through the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS) is up 26 percent from last year. Since PICS was established in 1998, the number of background checks has incrementally increased from 200,000 at it inception to over a million by 2013. That was mostly due to the post-Sandy Hook talk about gun control (via Penn Live)...

The research, "The Online Trade Of Light Weapons In Libya," conducted by the Small Arms Survey, provides detailed information on how the firearm trade on Facebook is propagating. It started during the fall of the Qaddafi regime, which had earlier established strict gun control laws that prohibited the trading of gun wares across the country. Libya, then, saw a sudden increase of weapon trade in the black market as regulations were lifted.

A Central Texas county is challenging a state finding that it must allow firearms to be carried in some areas of a courthouse complex. McLennan County commissioners on Friday voted to pursue legal action, if necessary, to continue prohibiting firearms at the courthouse and an adjoining annex.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. — John Stuart Mills
