A gun range owner in Brevard gave people a chance to shoot fully automatic weapons Monday. Assault-style weapons have been a big topic since the mass shootings in Las Vegas and Parkland, Florida. Fully automatic means the gun fires continuously from the moment the trigger is pulled until it is released. "Today is a machine gun social," explained Bear Arms co-owner Justin Fisher. For $25, plus the price of ammunition, people got to try a fully automatic weapon, like a Vietnman-era M-60.

The Deerfield, Ill., City Council recently moved forward with gun control measures that almost immediately drew legal challenges. The town early this month enacted an ordinance that bans nearly all semi-automatic rifles, and even some handguns and shotguns. Soon after, Guns Save Life filed a lawsuit challenging the town’s attempt to criminalize so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines.” In what is being termed a confiscatory move, the Deerfield City Council said residents have until June 13 to turn in all guns that fall under the parameters of the new law. Failing to turn in the affected firearms could results in a fine of $250 to $1,000 per day.

In the Ann Arbor Public Schools, we have worked to ensure student, staff, and parent safety by enacting policies to prevent the disruptive and dangerous presence of guns in our schools. We believe that the possession of a gun in school, other than by sworn officers, runs counter to what we are hard-wired to do as educators: keep our students, staff, and families safe and ensure a warm, welcoming environment where our students may grow, learn and thrive at school.

Our AAPS district involvement with guns in schools began on Thursday evening, March 5, 2015, when an individual with a concealed pistol license attended a choir concert at Pioneer High School and openly carried a gun into the auditorium.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court (1939-75)
