North Carolina high schools could offer a class on gun safety this fall if a bill passes the state legislature. The class would also teach students about the math, history and science of guns. Some parents said teaching students about guns should be off limits in school. Others said this kind of course would teach kids respect for guns and possibly prevent violence.

Perhaps you know a journalist who doesn't understand firearms. Send them this style sheet.
Firearms and the use of force often confuses both the layman and the journalist. This style sheet tries to present complex subjects in simple terms that most of us can understand.

Two years after nine churchgoers were shot to death in a horrific gun spree in Charleston, S.C., tone-deaf state lawmakers are considering a measure to allow South Carolina residents to carry guns — openly or concealed — without the need to obtain a state weapons permit. Representative Bill Crosby supports gun rights but felt obliged to warn the House as it approved the measure last week that “all it does is it makes these good ol’ boys who like to have guns strapped to their hips not conceal them.” |

With the 2016-2017 winter behind us, I thought we'd take a look at how wildlife fared, both at home and around the country. I could be a bit premature. It was 1984 or 1985, but we had an April 12 blizzard that began with light snow on Sunday evening. I jokingly told the kids that we wouldn't have school the next day. By the time a final count was taken, South Dakota lost 84,000 head of livestock. |

Whether you come from a long line of hunters or you're just looking at getting your first gun, safety is always a priority. For those with kids, however, safety is imperative to helping your children respect, understand and enjoy the responsible use of firearms. Kids are naturally curious and if they come across firearms — either at home or elsewhere — serious problems can quickly arise if they don't know the basics of firearm safety. The same is true for children raised in an environment with frequent firearm usage.

Child care centers, public universities and churches would no longer be "gun-free zones" for Missourians with concealed carry permits under a proposed House bill. "Is this for show or is this for real?" Rep. Jon Carpenter, D-Kansas City, asked during a Missouri House General Laws committee hearing on Monday. "I want individuals to be able to choose whether or not they carry a gun to protect themselves and others if the need were to arise," Rep. Jered Taylor, R-Nixa, responded.

Williston police often confiscate guns during the course of investigations, but on Wednesday, many of the firearms taken out of commission over the past several decades will go to the highest bidder. About 150 guns, ranging from hunting rifles, shot guns and revolvers to the tiniest of pistols, are set for the auction block at the Raymond Family Community Center in Williston. “You can get something really nice for a good price,” Megan Peterson, the Williston Police Department’s evidence technician, said. Holsters are included with some of the guns, she added.

In one mass shooting after another, some gun control advocates and journalists see a common thread: when domestic violence is not the immediate cause of a mass shooting, it was there as a warning sign in the history of the perpetrator. On Monday, a husband murdered his wife, an elementary school teacher, and an eight-year-old child, opening fire on them in a classroom in San Bernardino, California, before turning the gun on himself, officials said. A nine-year-old student was also injured in the attack.

Members of the Sin City Deciples motorcycle club have told police that the 38-year-old shooting victim in a deadly March shoot-out with other club members might have fired his gun first, according to recently unsealed court documents. Dion Nixon was fatally wounded March 15 inside the door of his home in the James Park Trailer Court while several children and his girlfriend took cover inside, according to police records. Suspected club members Richard Alexander Byrd, 48, Rufus Billups, 41, and Gregory Shariod Clark, 39, have all been arrested on first-degree murder charges in connection with the gun battle that left the ground outside Nixon’s trailer littered with about 24 spent 9mm and .40 caliber shell casings. |

Republicans and gun rights groups vowed to counter billionaire Michael Bloomberg's newly announced $25 million campaign against national gun-carry reciprocity on Tuesday. "Common sense national concealed carry reciprocity is gaining traction across the country," Rep. Richard Hudson (R., N.C.), who introduced the national reciprocity bill Bloomberg is targeting, told the Washington Free Beacon. "Big city liberals like Bloomberg can spend all the money they want to create fear with emotion, but the truth and facts are on our side. Just like states recognizing other states' driver's licenses, national concealed carry reciprocity makes good sense." |
