Key gun rights questions likely to go unasked at NRA meeting

"As gun owners gather this weekend for the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Nashville, two events are scheduled to take place that will have lasting effects on politics affecting the right to keep and bear arms: This year’s meeting of members, and appearances by politicians of national stature, including one announced and several likely presidential contenders. Likely to go unchallenged and unchanged is NRA’s deliberate indifference to the one issue that has the potential to undo and reverse all legislative and judicial gains for gun rights won to date: Amnesty for illegal aliens followed up with a 'pathway to citizenship.'" ...

... "While Americans have the constitutional rights to keep and bear arms ...it is not just in California where guns are seized and destroyed illegally, attorneys charge."

"'This kind of below-the-radar bureaucratic gun confiscation is a growing Second Amendment and property rights violation problem, particularly in strict gun control states like California, New Jersey and Massachusetts,' said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the [SAF]. 'People can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees to get back a $500 firearm.'"

"The [SAF]’s most recent case involves Rick Bailey ... whose entire collection of 28 firearms valued at $25,000 was seized by authorities because of an ongoing dispute with a neighbor." ...

"John Rosenthal has his knickers in quite a twist. He’s the co-founder of Massachusetts-based Stop Handgun Violence and is the man responsible for the iconic 252 foot long anti-gun billboard which used to face the Mass. Pike near Fenway Park. Unfortunately his craving for filthy lucre recently overcame his principles and he sold the parking garage where the sign was mounted. He thought he would be able to keep spreading his message (for free no less) as four media companies had agreed to donate space on 36 billboards to the cause . . ."

"The surprise hit of the National Firearms Law Seminar (for me, anyway,) was the last presentation of the day by William J. Ryan, from the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE). Mr. Ryan’s speech came at the end of almost nine hours of lectures (including the luncheon speaker,) and I was internally debating whether or not I should bail out early to check out the outdoor concert and see if I could find a good pair of Lucchese roper boots from some of the nearby shops….but I am really glad I didn’t . . ." ...

"Glenn Harlan Reynolds, of Instapundit fame, was the specal lunch speaker at the National Firearms Law Seminar yesterday at the NRA Annual Meeting. Professor Reynolds gave an interesting talk derived from an article he wrote for the Tennessee Law Review last year, 'The Second Amendment as Ordinary Constitutional Law.' He covered a variety of topics, but said one thing I thought really interesting (which I hastily scrawled on my napkin, so apologies if the wording is not exact): 'If a premises owner bars me from possessing a gun on those premises, he should be liable if I suffer as a result of it, as if he had done it himself.' . . ." ...

"The biggest pain in the ass for pistol silencer owners is figuring out how to accurately shoot with the damned can attached. Most silencers obscure the sight picture for standard height sights, and the only options available are extended 'silencer' sights (which look ridiculous) or a laser sight of some sort. That’s one of the reasons that my nightstand gun (a SIG SAUER Mk25 with AAC Ti-Rant 9mm can) has a set of Crimson Trace lasergrips, so I can actually figure out where I’m aiming. AAC thinks they’ve got a better solution: the Illusion silencer." ...

"Cobalt Kinetics is a company so new that their website doesn’t even work yet, but their rifles already look dead sexy. This is their entry level rifle: the BAMF. "'In the gun world, there are obvious women’s guns,' wkrn.com pronounces, without revealing which firearms qualify for the double-X chromosome set. It’s a good question: what IS a woman’s gun? We asked our readers that very thing last month in Question of the Day: Is There Such a Thing As A 'Woman’s Gun'?. Some 98 members of TTAG’s Armed Intelligentsia weighed-in without obvious consensus, and a lot of obvious snark. Our friends at Remington hit the NRA convention in Nashville in search of answers . . ." ...

"When I was over at the IWA show in Germany, something I noticed was that modular silencers were quite the thing. I thought we’d never see the likes in the USA due to the ATF and NFA getting in the way, but I may have spoken too soon. First the SilencerCo shotgun silencer sports removable sections to make your can as long or short as you need it that day, and now AAC has a modular .45 ACP pistol silencer that they are showing off with the same general idea. Instead of buying a long can and a short can to cover your various suppression needs, the Ti-Rant 45M can will cover all the bases." ...

And this weekend at the NRA convention Carson is again trying to 'clarify' his stance on guns."

"Tennessee legislators passed a new Second Amendment rights bill which was signed into law by the governor this week. It’s a rather unusual law, if only for the the specific scenarios which are covered. Referred to as the 'Guns in Parking Lots' law, it’s a companion piece to a related bit of legislation which was enacted last year. The previous law decriminalized the storing of weapons in the automobiles of employees while parked on the employer’s property even if said employer had posted a rule forbidding weapons on the premises. But after review by the state Attorney General, it was noted that the employee could still be fired for violating the rule, even if they wouldn’t be prosecuted in court." ...

"We often give caveats to our criticisms of police in order to shield ourselves from counter-critique. We often wrap our condemnation of rogue cops by saying, 'No. Not all cops are bad.' These obligatory disclaimers are, in their own way, part of the problem. We are afraid of saying what we know to be true for fear of being seen as too radical or harboring hatred of the police. Well, you can think what you want: so long as the police forces around the United States allow small men with big guns, Napolean complexes and over-inflated egos to serve as police officers, we will continue to see the endemic police brutality that is so normal in our nation." ...

"'Massachusetts saw a spike in the number of its highest capacity gun licenses last year,' bostonglobe.com reports, 'despite the passage of a sweeping gun control bill that aimed to make the state’s already strict gun laws even tighter.' Yup. Writer Catherine Cloutier assumes that Americans exercising their natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms is a bad thing. And that laws that that infringe upon that right should lead to less citizens keeping and bearing arms. Admittedly, that is the point. But once again, the law of unintended consequences – the principle which elevated President Obama to Gun Salesman of the Decade – apply in The Bay State. Here’s how that went down . . ." ...

H/t to David Codrea who asks: Does anyone think a "compromise" would have been offered if it hadn't been perceived as a necessary skin-saving political move?

Why turn down the heat and give those bastards a pass? You know they'll only be back at your throats when they think they can get away with it.
