Firearms Accidents Even Rarer Than Hen’s Teeth

"Unintentional firearms deaths have been falling steadily since 1981 and fell off the table in 1993 as the graph plainly shows. The question is why? For the period 1981 to 1998 (the last year data is available) unintentional shooting deaths have dropped by a stunning 54 percent. Contrast this with unintentional poisoning over the same period that increased by 123 percent. Or how about unintentional drowning? Over the same period people drowned accidentally at a rate more than double accidental shooting deaths. What is going on here?" ...

"If I wish to carry my gun whilst tarrying in Massachusetts, the first thing I need is an Massachusetts License to Carry (LTC). To wrangle one of those from Bay State bureaucrats, I must take a [MA] firearms safety class. Afterwards, I have to submit an application to the PTB with a copy of my home state’s carry permit, all the usual bona fides, a $100 fee (no personal checks) and a compelling reason why I need to carry a concealed firearm in Massachusetts (no personal safety stuff). If they like the cut of my jib, I have to travel to Adams Massachusetts for a personal interview. Even if I get an LTC . . ."

Gun Owners Must Take Center Stage

"This evening HBO will air a controversial new documentary film, four years in the making, entitled Gun Fight. Crafted by the acclaimed Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple, the film certainly illustrates one all too obvious truth about the gun debate in America: polar opposites continue to exist on both sides. Sadly, the film veers from a dispassionate, comprehensive view (tough to do in 88 minutes), into scoring many subtle advocacy points." ...

"There's a scene in Barbara Kopple's new documentary, Gun Fight, that more or less sums up the woeful state of public discourse over gun control. Two men stand next to each other outside the Supreme Court, furiously waving their picket signs. The man on the left claims that 70 percent of Americans own guns and support gun rights; the man on the right claims that 70 percent of Americans want tighter gun laws. One of the more discouraging things about the gun-control debate in America is that, over the years, it's been reduced to a set of platitudes and manipulated statistics. Gun Fight may do nothing to help mitigate such intractable partisanship but, in the very least it will leave viewers thinking about the debate in new ways." ...

"This past weekend, as has become someting of a pattern, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) accused (via Twitter) me and other gun rights advocates of 'insurrection' and 'treason.' This, despite the fact that there doesn't seem to be any 'insurrection' going on in the U.S., and the fact that the Constitution's necessarily extremely narrow definition of 'treason' can't possibly be applied to stating the obvious fact that the Second Amendment exists as the last bulwark against tyranny." ...
