Why It’s So Hard to Discuss Guns Rationally With Some People

"I have a colleague who, until the Sandy Hook shooting, was very congenial, even complimentary. Though we don’t teach in the same department, we always got along very well, frequently chatting in more depth than merely exchanging greetings. And then one morning, I chanced onto a conversation between him and another teacher about school shootings. The encounter occurred shortly after Sandy Hook, while the issues raised by it were still very much the rage. He asked me if I thought arming staff was a good idea . . ."

"I should have known better, but I naively plowed ahead, expecting the same kind of cordial, collegial conversation we’d always enjoyed to that point." ...

"Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) signed what the Hartford Courant called 'the toughest assault weapons legislation in the nation' last year. It required owners of semi-automatic firearms to register all firearms designated as 'assault weapons' with the state government, along with any 'high capacity' magazines they may own, by December 31, 2013."

"The Malloy regime expected Connecticut residents to register somewhere between 372,000-400,000 firearms, and roughly 2 million firearm magazines that held more than 10 rounds before January 1."

"What they got instead was defiance." ...

"I’ve waited this long to comment on the latest atrocity at Fort Hood, to allow the investigation to play out. A few days prior to the incident, my friend and colleague John Farnam had pointed out that military intelligence indicated there would be a “replay of Fort Hood” very soon somewhere in America. At this point, there is no indication that he latest mad dog was a jihadist, only a man with a broken mind who had apparently put a good deal of thought into such mass murder before he carried it out…closer to the monster of Sandy Hook Elementary School than the fanatic who previously wrought havoc at Fort Hood." ...

"Ordained minister and gun rights activist told Guns & Patriots that his love of firearms and love of God is the inspiration of his newly released book."

"'I love influencing, motivating and inspiring people,' said Rev. Kenneth V.F. Blanchard, who is the creator of the 'Black Man with a Gun' blog and podcast which is a weekly program that focuses on inspiring, informing and entertaining the people inside the gun community."

"Blanchard said his book 'Black Man with a Gun: Reloaded' is a snap-shot of his life from becoming known as the 'Black Man with a Gun' to 'Pastor of Patriots'." ...

"Let’s get real about armed self-defense. 30 million of us live in California counties that won’t issue concealed carry licenses. The good news is that responsible gun owners can change that. If they can change the perceptions of firearms in California, then responsible gun owners can change your state as well. Remember that 10 million Californians live in shall-issue counties! ... My neighbors living in those shall-issue counties can have a concealed carry license for the asking."

"Nothing speaks louder than a living example. My responsible neighbors will show us that discreet carry is not the fearful monster the politicians described. Our armed neighbors from shall issue counties can walk down Market Street in San Francisco, where San Francisco natives must be disarmed. ..." ...

"It's being called a massive case of duplicity and hypocrisy."

"The FBI has arrested California state Sen. Leland Yee, a staunch anti-gun fanatic, for his alleged involvement in a gun-running conspiracy. According to the Los Angeles Times, an affidavit filed in federal court in San Francisco by FBI Special Agent Emmanuel V. Pascua said the agency had probable cause to suspect Yee has been involved in various crimes, including a conspiracy to deal firearms without a license and import firearms illegally."

"Yee, who is prominent in California's longstanding Democratic legislative minority, has for years been one of the chamber's most virulent advocates against guns and violent video games." ...

... "To many Americans, [the Second Amendment's] wording strongly suggests that there should be no restrictions against the possession of personal firearms. The [NRA] is the most strident advocate of that interpretation, and it has worked tirelessly to secure extremely strong support among our nation’s lawmakers."

"But there’s been a tendency ... by gun rights advocates to overlook the 'well regulated Militia' wording in the amendment and that may help explain why these advocates have so far been so successful." ...

"And so today the United States is regarded around the world as a nation where the rights of gun-owners — and the frequently gruesome consequences of those unrestricted rights — take precedence over common sense." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Since (for example) calling the Armenian Genocide of 1915 a genocide, or criticizing Mustafa Attaturk can get a Turkish journalist thrown in prison, I don't think I will give a damn about what "around the world" thinks of our Constitutional Rights, m-kay?

As for "broadening the debate," it would be easier to do that if comments were enabled.
Just sayin'.

"Gun ownership laws are a heated topic across the United States due to the constitutional issues involved. From a public health perspective it is however clear that guns are dangerous. With guns, suicide becomes the biggest problem, reports MedPage Today on April 11, 2014. In fact every single day 88 people die from a firearm associated injury and about two-thirds of those deaths are due to suicides." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Really? So if guns are the problem, then why does Japan have a suicide rate more than twice that of the US?

"A year after the General Assembly passed and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed historic gun legislation inspired by the killings in Newtown, there are strong indications the new law is doing what it was meant to do."

"We hasten to add it is not doing what was never intended, from the illegal seizure of guns by the government, as feared by the most ardent misinterpreters of the Second Amendment, to making criminals of those who failed to register their weapons in the allotted time. They did that to themselves and are no different from those who choose to drive without a license." ...

Submitter's Note: No, driving without a license is A) perfectly legal on private property and 2) requires actually doing something.

Harry Reid."

"As more BLM documents have come to light and connections to previous news reports made, a picture has emerged of efforts by Reid and his son, lawyer Rory Reid, to land a $5 billion Chinese solar power project that will build in Laughlin, Nevada, and in Clark County, where the County Commission sold public land for cents on the dollar to ENN Energy Group." ...

Dozens of them, not all carrying a firearm in full view, were protesting an ordinance they consider illegal because it limits their right to carry loaded weapons." ...
