The only gun control bill moving through the Alaska Legislature this year is dead, one of the lawmakers pushing it declared Thursday.
House Bill 75 is designed to reduce the risk of mass shootings by setting up new procedures to take guns from people deemed to be dangerous by judges and police officers.
But supporters said Thursday that with the legislative session nearing its end, they had failed to gain the endorsement of a critical interest group: the National Rifle Association.
"We're on the 87th day of the legislative session and we really should be finishing in 90 days," said Anchorage Democratic Rep. Matt Claman, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, where the bill is stuck.

The latest data show that people use guns for self-defense only rarely. According to a Harvard University analysis of figures from the National Crime Victimization Survey, people defended themselves with a gun in nearly 0.9 percent of crimes from 2007 to 2011.
David Hemenway, who led the Harvard research, argues that the risks of owning a gun outweigh the benefits of having one in the rare case where you might need to defend yourself.
"The average person ... has basically no chance in their lifetime ever to use a gun in self-defense," he tells Here & Now's Robin Young. "But ... every day, they have a chance to use the gun inappropriately. They have a chance, they get angry. They get scared." |

Killing another person can have legal consequences even when the shooter says it was self-defense.
The state Legislature is moving to guard Oklahomans in places of worship from prosecution if they use deadly force to defend themselves during religious services.
The Senate on Thursday followed the House in passing House Bill 2632, which extends protections provided under the state’s Stand Your Ground law to places of worship.
The bill was inspired by recent shootings in U.S. churches. |

Next Tuesday, the Senate Judiciary B Committee is scheduled to hear anti-gun legislation, Senate Bill 185. Please contact the Senate Judiciary B committee and urge them to be present and vote in opposition to this bill.
Senate Bill 185, sponsored by Sen. Wesley Bishop (D-4), would allow local municipalities throughout the state to pass their own gun control laws, creating a patchwork of different laws from parrish to parrish or city to city. It eliminates the authority of state laws over local ordinances and regulations. |

Georgy Uchaikin bristles at the mere existence of this practice. As director of the Ukrainian Association of Gun Owners or UAGO, he advocates for Ukrainians’ legal right to bear arms. To him, “awarded guns” demonstrate the discriminatory nature of his country’s gun policies.
By law, these awards are intended only for military men and women. But interpretation is loose. As a result, Uchaikin estimates Ukrainian authorities have handed out 50,000 weapons to members of the elite since independence in 1991 in a state that is otherwise hostile to gun ownership. |

The UK already has some of toughest gun restriction laws in the world. Handguns are banned and even some air guns, and, for all other firearms, citizens must have a "good reason" to have them. Its effective confiscation of firearms compares more favorably to a dictatorship than to a democratic society.
As a result of all this, Great Britain has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world.
How nice, except there's just one teeny-weeny problem: A low gun homicide rate does not translate into a low overall homicide rate, especially in a city like London. |

A Nevada woman was scheduled to sing the national anthem ahead of a minor league baseball game this summer, but when the team enacted a new policy preventing her from carrying her gun, she reneged.
“I will not sing our national anthem at a place that seeks to strip me of my Second Amendment rights,” Alishia Wolcott wrote in a letter to the Reno Acres, the Associated Press reported.
The scheduled singer just earned her concealed carry permit earlier this year and planned to bring her Glock 43, a 9mm pistol, to the game, according to the Reno Gazette Journal. |

The event is expected to run about two hours, and coincides with similar events in state capitals across the country.

Hundreds of people expected to attend a 2nd Amendment Rights Rally set for Saturday on the grounds of the State House complex would be well-advised to leave firearms at home.
Regulations authorized under state law say only police officers can carry weapons on state-owned and state-controlled property in Augusta. That includes the planned rally site at the plaza between the State House and the Burton M. Cross State Office Building, making it a gun-free zone for everyone but police. |

The National Rifle Association has endorsed Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle in his gubernatorial bid.
Cagle won a ringing endorsement from the gun rights group on Thursday, April 12, for what it described as Cagle’s “unwavering” support for gun rights during his time in office.
Cagle also turned heads earlier this year when he pulled a subsidy for Delta Air Lines from a state tax reform bill during the Georgia General Assembly’s legislative session. |

On Friday, April 6, 2018, U.S. District Judge William Young said assault weapons are military firearms and aren't protected by the constitutional right to “bear arms.” However, he couldn’t be more wrong.
First and foremost, the term “Assault-Weapon” is a made up term by the gun control lobby to strike fear into the hearts and minds of Americans. Gun control activists rely very heavily on fear-based language to pursued Americans that guns are naturally evil, and that the only solution is to pass stricter gun control laws. |

Arizona Gov. Dough Ducey’s plan for school safety is receiving pushback from both sides.
On Thursday a gun safety group formed by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords said the plan is insufficient to protect the public against future mass shootings, while gun rights activists are claiming it infringes on the Second Amendment.
Senate Bill 1519, set for debate Monday before the Senate Committee on Commerce and Public Safety, includes additional school resource officers and money for counseling.
But at the heart of the plan are Severe Threat Orders of Protection, or “STOP” orders. |

Vermont gun shop owners reacted with anger and disappointment Thursday to the new gun laws signed by Gov. Phil Scott on Wednesday, and one owner of a rapidly growing business said he may well leave the state as a result.
Adam Nilson co-founded Atlas Gunworks in North Ferrisburgh in 2016, together with his partner, Tod West, making competition handguns that start at about $4,000. Nilson said his business has doubled its revenue each year, and that he expects to do $2 million in business this year. He has 8 employees.
But they might soon not be working here. |

There is growing evidence that some of America’s financial elite want to create a world in which America’s public policy decisions emanate from corporate boardrooms in Manhattan rather than from citizens and their elected officials. Last month, we saw thousands hit the streets and call for gun control in the March For Our Lives.
Now, gun owners say it’s their turn. Pro-gun rallies will be held across the country Saturday, including in Olympia.
There are more than 50 rallies planned for tomorrow, most at state capitols. Some states will see rallies at both their capitols and in other cities. At least three are planned in Utah, where some state lawmakers are expected to speak. Some expect hundreds to attend, others thousands. |

You see, a new Quinnipiac poll shows that 33 percent of Democrats polled favored repealing the Second Amendment. Compare that to just 14 percent of Independents, which include people to the left of the Democratic party, and just four percent of Republicans.
They’re not coming for our guns, just our sacred right to keep and bear arms.
Make no mistake; a repeal of the Second Amendment is an essential item on their agenda. It has to be. Ever since the Heller decision solidified the right to keep and bear arms as an individual right, the anti-gun left has known they couldn’t enact the gun bans they’d prefer with the Second Amendment intact. They need to dismantle it. |

Days before it was even up on I-85 and I-40, a billboard sponsored by the North Carolina Council of Churches began receiving national attention. The coalition of 18 denominations commissioned the billboard displaying the Second Commandment – "You shall not make for yourself an idol" – with an image of guns and bullets.
The intention, says executive director Jennifer Copeland, is to remind people that for some, guns have become a symbol of safety – or what some in the religious community might see as idolatry. She says the reaction is intense.

The confluence of events will be happening at virtually the same time Saturday. The Second Amendment rally is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the north side of the state Capitol and the March for Science is from noon to 3 p.m. at nearby Minuteman Park. |
