"In the May edition of the libertarian magazine Reason, anthropologist Abigail A. Kohn, author of Shooters: Myths and Realities of America's Gun Cultures, outlined the case for why gun control advocates should find common ground with gun enthusiasts. In the same issue, George Mason law professor Michael I. Krauss characterized Kohn's sympathy toward gun owners as 'much like an article urging people not to fear the Jews because they don't really drink the blood of Christian babies.'"

"Despite this positive tilt, favorable opinions of the NRA are relatively soft. Only 18% view the NRA "very" favorably, while an almost equal number, 15%, view it "very" unfavorably. People with a less intense feeling split 42% favorably to 19% unfavorably." ... |

FULL TEXT BELOW:
State game officers killed a female mountain lion near Las Vegas earlier this month after it killed a dog and then chased the dog's owner to his house. Officers responded to a call from a man who said he'd been stalked by a mountain lion on April 6. The man told game officers he'd heard a yelp, and found a mountain lion with the dog in its mouth in his back yard. The man went inside to get his pistol, and says the lion came after him when he came outside. He fired, but the lion chased him back inside. Game officers couldn't find the cat that afternoon, but lured the lion out the next day by using calls of a fawn bleating. They then killed the young female lion. It weighed about 110 pounds. |

"The sponsor of a gun-permit law that was invalidated by two Minnesota courts has introduced a bill to reinstate the law."
"Sen. Pat Pariseau, R-Farmington, said she hopes the Legislature will act this year on the gun law. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeals upheld a ruling that overturned the 2003 law."
"The appeals court and a district court judge both ruled that the law, which led to more permits being issued to carry guns in public, was wrongly tacked onto an unrelated bill to get it through the Legislature."
"'The ruling handed down Tuesday worsens the patchwork nature of the state's handgun permitting process, and overturns many important public safety provisions contained in the Personal Protection Act,' Pariseau said in a news release." |

A bill requiring Illinois gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms failed in the Senate today.
The measure also includes stiffer penalties for illegal possession of guns and an additional requirement for buying a gun. The bill failed 27-to-27, with four "present" votes.
People would have to report stolen guns to the state police within 72 hours.
Senator Don Harmon initially wanted the state to take away Firearm Owners Identification cards from violators. The National Rifle Association objected. So the Oak Park Democrat changed it so violators would face a petty offense.
Harmon also toned down requirements for gun shops to record information from people applying to buy a gun.
Harmon used a parliamentary move to call the bill for another vote. |

The Assembly voted Thursday to limit the use of stun guns in Nevada.
AB123 makes it illegal for anyone to use a stun gun except in self defense. It would prohibit felons, fugitives and mentally ill people from owning and using the devices.
If they have parental permission, teenagers could own and use a stun gun for self-defense in their homes.
The bill was backed by law enforcement groups who said the stunning devices are increasingly being marketed to the general public and winding up in the hands of criminals. |

A Denny's employee was fired after a U.S. Border Patrol agent complained about an insulting order slip for a chicken sandwich.
The employee accidentally gave the agent the wrong slip of paper, one that normally is used to send an order to the cook, instead of the receipt. The slip of paper included an order for the $7.49 sandwich and the words: "Border Ass Whole." Denny's corporate headquarters distributed a statement by the franchise owner that the "rogue" employee was fired after the April 9 incident.
"Denny's supports and welcomes all Border Patrol personnel and their families," the statement said.
But Tucson Sector Chief Mike Nicley said the incident showed "unmitigated gall" by the employee and called Denny's headquarters to complain. "I'm outraged about it," he said. "We take this very seriously." |

"In a well-researched, credible study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it was found that 'nearly three-quarters of handgun owners said self-protection was the primary reason for owning a gun. Research in several U.S. urban areas indicates that a gun stored in the home is associated with a threefold increase in the risk of homicide and a fivefold increase in the risk of suicide. In fact, guns kept in the home are 43 times more likely to be used to kill someone known to the family than to be used to kill in self-defense.'
