What must be troubling for Huckabee is that the pro-life, pro-marriage, pro-Second Amendment former Southern Baptist minister isn't gaining traction. If there ever was a time for a candidate to reap what he has sewn with evangelical conservatives, this would seem to be it.
But polls and fund-raising totals indicate that these voters are split among all the candidates and are not coalescing around the man from Hope.

Rep. Angel Cruz, D-Philadelphia, authored the bill that would apply to all guns in the state except antiques and duty weapons used by law-enforcement personnel. The bill would allow police to confiscate guns from owners who failed to pass the registration process, and make it a summary offense for failing to comply with the registration rules. |

Like a courtroom version of “High Noon,” legal guns are squaring off this year in a confrontation over the Second Amendment.
And whoever wins, the battle will touch off a longtime culture war that rivals Roe v. Wade, said National Rifle Association (NRA) President Sandra Froman in an April 5 visit to Harvard. |

Somehow I cannot envision a reporter asking a candidate, "Do you have what it takes to order the use of Nuclear Weapons?". Even further from the realm of possiblity is a straight answer to such a question. The question goes to the soul of the candidate. No matter how they answer it or what weasel words they use, if their answer is other than "yes" severe doubt would be attached to their fitness to take the job. |

Mitchell's co-worker said she is planning on getting a gun.
"My dad has had concerns about me living alone, so he would definitely like me to eventually get a gun to have in the household to protect myself," Farley said. "Until I feel safe handling a weapon I didn't want to even look into it." |

Yet firing at moving vehicles is controversial, and it's more limited in other cities. For example, police officers in Los Angeles are prohibited from firing at a moving vehicle unless a person inside it threatens the officer with deadly force by means other than the vehicle itself, such as with a gun. |

America's founders, having fled the horrors of tyrants' enslavement, wrote down a list of these conscientious, overtly obvious, self-evident truths for a new nation.
What resulted was a guideline for life in this new land of the free and home of the brave, just in case anyone would be so foolish or evil as to forget.
We members of the NRA believe in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. With all due respect, we don't need anybody to translate them for us, thank you. |

Allow me to offer a more optimistic view: Parker not only marks the beginning of the end of gun prohibition, it might also reverse the erosion of our individual rights by re-enforcing the primacy of judicial review and preventing sophists from defining rights out of existence.
Ed.: An excellent article, imho, by Alan Gura. |

The Founders wrote what they wrote, but they wrote for a century and a nation for which the Second Amendment no longer is appropriate. Yet we should adhere faithfully to the letter and spirit of the Constitution: Quixotic as it may be right now, I propose that we begin thinking about invoking the Constitution's Article V and repeal the Second Amendment. |

The sale of imitation samurai swords could be banned by the end of the year, the Home Office announced today.
Importing or hiring the weapons could also be made illegal following a string of samurai sword attacks in recent years.
Breaching the ban, which is targeted at cheap imitation samurai swords rather than the more expensive genuine collectors' items made by licensed swordsmiths in Japan, would result in up to six months in jail and a £5,000 fine. |

Despite his promise to appoint "strict constructionists" to the Supreme Court if he is elected president, Rudy Giuliani recently said he has no interest in overturning Roe v. Wade. Since Giuliani also claims to support "the right to bear arms" (a right that is actually mentioned in the Constitution), he should, by similar logic, advocate the use of taxpayer money to buy guns for poor people. But the idea would never occur to him - because his sudden interest in the Second Amendment, like his sudden interest in strict constructionism, is merely an affectation intended to allay the concerns of Republican primary voters. |

I am tired of celebrities (pick one), a national correspondent on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" (March 18), Tom Wharton (Salt Lake Tribune, March 22), and legions of private citizens trampling on the Constitution of my country in defense of their "right" to own a gun. The problem is . . . they're wrong. It's a myth, folklore. The Second Amendment allows states to have their own armies (militias), U.S. military forces notwithstanding. It confers no rights to an individual. Please consider the following arguments: |

A powerful player was dragged Friday into the ongoing fight at the Legislature over access to firearms in Georgia. Representatives of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association say a proposal to salvage a Senate bill allowing employees to keep firearms in their vehicles parked on company property could have disastrous consequences for anyone hoping to hold corporations accountable for their negligent acts. Chan Caudell, legislative chairman of the association, said a proposed section in a bill expected to be heard on Monday in a Senate committee would represent a "sea change" in state liability laws. Caudell and the association say the bill would eliminate a concept known as "vicarious liability" from Georgia law. |

In a hospital emergency room, a young man winces as doctors try to determine how badly he has been injured. His name is Karim Williams, he is 27, and he is this city's latest shooting victim. He says he was hit around 12:30 a.m. by a shot fired while he was walking from his girlfriend's car into a bar. In some ways, Mr. Williams is a typical patient at the trauma unit: young, mildly intoxicated and apparently with no idea why he was shot. What makes his case less common is that he is neither seriously injured nor dead, since Philadelphia is in the midst of an epidemic of gun violence that has left the police struggling to preserve public safety and government officials renewing efforts to tighten the state's gun control laws. |

If Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg was looking for evidence that his campaign against illegal guns had caught the notice of the National Rifle Association, he would need to look no further than the current cover of America's 1st Freedom, the group's news magazine. "Tentacles!" shouts the headline over a cartoon illustration of Mr. Bloomberg depicting him as a giant octopus, looking fierce and slightly insane, with serpentine arms swirling behind him. Inside are a main article, two sidebars and a column devoted to the idea that Mr. Bloomberg, as the cover puts it, is extending "his reach, and his illegal antigun tactics, across America." |

The National Rifle Association, citing shifting political winds in Congress after the 2006 elections, urged its members Saturday to unite against "the storm that lies ahead" for gun owners. "Today there is not one firearm owner whose freedom is secure," the group's executive vice president, Wayne R. LaPierre, told thousands gathered for the annual national convention here. "You will rise and stand and we, together, we will fight them all." The NRA's meetings and exhibits are expected to draw about 50,000 persons to America's Center convention hall by its close tonight. |

Lawmakers, trying to stop cities and counties from writing their own tougher concealed carry rules, are now facing a veto from the governor. Governor Sebelius delivered her veto message to the legislature today, saying she doesn't oppose making the rules for concealed-carry permits consistent across Kansas. Her problem with the bill was provisions cut out by the senate, including banning guns at youth athletic events that aren't related to firearms. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"Let us contemplate our forefathers, and posterity, and resolve to maintain the rights bequeathed to us from the former, for the sake of the latter. The necessity of the times, more than ever, calls for our utmost circumspection, deliberation, fortitude, and perseverance. Let us remember that `if we suffer tamely a lawless attack upon our liberty, we encourage it, and involve others in our doom.' It is a very serious consideration...that millions yet unborn may be the miserable sharers of the event." --Samuel Adams, speech in Boston, 1771 |
