PJ Media actually hit me with a pretty tall order with what appeared to be a simple suggestion for an article: a step-by-step process for those who know absolutely nada about guns yet want to arm themselves.

My immediate response — “Sure, I’ll get right on it” — was tempered roughly .00093 nanoseconds later by the realization of the task ahead of me.

Getting a gun — especially the first one — is a pretty big deal.

Don’t get me wrong, I blame George Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin. But I also blame the NRA and the politicians who do their bidding for putting the gun in his hands. George Zimmerman had an arrest record and a history of violence. Yet he was allowed to carry a loaded, hidden handgun in the state of Florida. This was the way the NRA wanted it, and this was the policy that the Florida State legislature created on the gun lobby’s behalf. Make no mistake, the gun lobby wanted George Zimmerman to have a gun, and to be carrying his gun the night he shot Trayvon Martin. They worked very hard to make it so.

Mitt Romney appeared at the National Rifle Association's annual convention over the weekend, spinning another one of his fables that he's always been a big supporter of Second Amendment rights -- despite his past support for tough guns laws.

"Robert Farago, our fearless leader over at TheTruthAboutGuns.com, suggested the other day that I take a look at the flip side of the anti’s newest attack on our freedoms (except it is actually a recycled attack from the Clinton era Public Health model of gun control) the monetary cost of gun violence. One of the antis’ favorite tools is to do cost-benefit analyses but then omit the benefit side."

After Judge Legg handed down his ruling in Woollard v. Sheridan that Maryland's requirement of a "good and sufficient reason" to receive a handgun permit was unconstitutional, hundred of applicants flooded the Maryland State Police Licensing Division with applications.

However, Judge Legg subsequently issued a temporary stay of that order and the state is petitioning for a permanent stay pending appeal. Given those circumstances, Maryland has been returning applications unprocessed with the following letter ...

For some, the disappointment stems from the failure of the NRA to support the lawsuit that led to the landmark Supreme Court decision on the Second Amendment. The case, District of Columbia v. Heller, was brought by a trio of libertarian lawyers with no formal ties to the gun-rights group. Rather than helping the lawyers, who were challenging Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns, the NRA did everything it could to stop the case. First it tried to convince the libertarian lawyers to drop their suit, saying it was too risky. When that didn't work, the NRA tried to take over the litigation and decouple it from the Second Amendment issues.

While the killing of Florida's Trayvon Martin has stoked up gun control advocates and much of the news media, an overwhelming majority of U.S. residents say they believe people have the right to use deadly physical force to protect themselves at home or in public, according to a poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos released on Friday.

In addition, majorities of Republicans and Democrats have a favorable view of the National Rifle Association, the nation's largest gun-owners group, the Reuters/Ipsos poll showed.

Melissa said her family took the train in to attend the convention--their first. She said her husband's interest in firearms sparked the trip, and they brought the family to teach them about guns. The couple's attention to the Second Amendment and firearms actually developed through friends who shared their interest in the topic with Melissa and her husband.

She said that she would like to see concealed carry happen in Illinois, the one state that does not permit it, and that the issue is something they're interested in as votors.

CA: Stand-your-ground the rule in state, courts affirm

The stand-your-ground doctrine, which has vaulted into national prominence with the killing of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, isn't limited to the two dozen states that have passed laws since 2005 expanding the right to use deadly force in confrontations.

It's also the rule in California, by court decree. For more than a century, the state's judges have declared that a person who reasonably believes he or she faces serious injury or death from an assailant does not have to back off - inside or outside the home - and instead can use whatever force is needed to eliminate the danger.

Mitt Romney on gun rights

In 1994 Romney supported the Brady bill creating a five day waiting period to buy a gun and he supported banning certain weapons from being sold in America - creating an underground market for such weapons. This is in directon conflict with the NRA position on the issue. He proudly said those positions wouldn't make him "the hero of the NRA. But then I don't line up with the NRA." As early as 2007 during one of the Republican debates for the 2008 Presidential race, Romney stated, "I also support an assault weapon ban."

While Governor of Massachusetts, Romney also dramatically inflated the fees associated with owning a gun by 400%.

The Michigan law says a person not committing a crime is not required to flee before using deadly force against someone if he/she reasonably believes such force is necessary to prevent death, bodily harm or sexual assault.

State Rep. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, the bill’s main sponsor, is a former Eaton County sheriff who as a state senator now chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. He said he worked with attorneys to draft the law in response to cases he dealt with during his career in law enforcement. While courts recognized a person’s right to self defense, Jones said it had not been expressly laid out in Michigan law before 2006.

Cosby said that he "used to have a gun," which he bought to "protect my family." He insists he has nothing against people having firearms in their homes to protect against intruders, but said he believes that being on the streets with a gun changes some people, making them bolder and more dangerous.

"When a person has a gun, sometimes their mind clicks that this thing ... will win arguments and straighten people out," he said.

GA: Stand Your Ground’s Hideous Double Standard of Prosecuting African-Americans

Whether or not race played a role in the incident may never be determined, but there is a case in Georgia in which the stand your ground law did not protect an African American man who shot and killed a white man on his own property. The case is the ultimate example of applying a different principle for a similar situation based on race.

Ed.: Perhaps that is because Georgia's SYG law was passed *after* this alleged self-defense shooting? A law that doesn't exist yet can't be expected to protect someone.

California Congressman Darrell Issa promised members of the National Rifle Association gathered here that his probe of the Operation Fast and Furious scandal will continue until those responsible for the debacle are held accountable.

If the investigation continues into the summer — as some sources here have suggested to this column, with significant action coming around the time of the Republican convention — it could become the major campaign issue many gun rights activists believe it should be.

FL: Was stand your ground law flawed from the beginning?

In 2005, as lawmakers pushed to pass sweeping self-defense legislation that would become known as the "stand your ground" law, critics had one challenge: Show us a case in which someone had been treated unjustly.

Backers of the new bill had an answer: James Workman.

Here was a 77-year-old retiree asleep with his wife in an RV outside their hurricane-damaged home in 2004. And here came a menacing intruder, prowling through the dark, bursting into the trailer. The homeowner shot the intruder, then had to wait months — painful, anxiety-filled months in legal jeopardy — before prosecutors decided that the two shots he fired were justified, that what he did was protect himself and his wife.

Heller thinks he hit the political mother lode by denying a confirmation hearing to what the Review-Journal, the Las Vegas Sun and practically every lawyer and judge in the land thinks is a very well qualified federal judicial candidate. By invoking his “privilege” to just say no, Nevada’s aberrant senator has put his foot on the throat of Judge Cadish’s judicial nomination and shown an incredible disrespect to the Nevada voters who put her on the court in the first place.

And he is blaming his actions on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which is proof that our new and inexperienced senator doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about.

In the event something like this was to happen in my own presence, the University’s current policy requires that I, an Army Infantry Officer with a concealed handgun permit, hide, run away or watch my fellow students be murdered or victimized. This University’s own history, as well as the occasional email alert regarding another mugging, sexual assault or murder on or near campus, stands as a witness to the failure of efforts to stop violence through disarming non-violent young people. I urge my fellow students to refuse to be a victim, support concealed carry on campus and demand their full rights as American citizens.

While Spruill and others at the NRA’s 141st annual meeting said they want all the facts about that night, the law backed by the NRA in Florida and 24 other states faces new questions from lawmakers in at least three states about whether the expansion of the centuries-old doctrine allowing people to defend themselves when attacked in their homes goes too far.

After an extraordinary 45-day campaign, the special prosecutor who took over the case charged Zimmerman. The neighborhood watch volunteer maintains that he shot the teen in self-defense after Martin attacked him. His attorney plans to cite Florida's ``stand-your-ground law,' which gives people wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight. The law is also part of the reason why authorities were reluctant to charge Zimmerman in the first place.
