... "That said, why can’t civilians have access to armor-penetrating bullets? Don’t criminals, who are more apt to attack civilians than armed and trained police, sometimes wear body armor when committing crimes? Remember the North Hollywood, California, shootout in February 1997? Two heavily armed men wearing body armor shot 7 civilians and 11 policemen as they attempted to escape after robbing a Bank of America branch. Armor-piercing ammunition in the possession of either armed civilians or police would have ended their escape attempt much sooner and with less injury."
"More recently, last month David Hernandez Arroyo killed two people and wounded several police officers in Tyler, Texas, before police shot him dead. One of his victims was 50-year old Mark Wilson, a citizen licensed to carry a concealed weapon. Wilson, who came to the aid of others attacked by Arroyo, shot Arroyo several times in the chest. But Arroyo was wearing body armor so Wilson’s bullets didn’t incapacitate him. Although Wilson saved the lives of others by distracting Arroyo, he himself was killed. If he had been using armor-piercing ammunition, he would be alive today." ... |

"Guns have long made some Americans feel safer and others more scared."
"These opposing views have sharpened in the 3 1/2 years since the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, as the U.S. government reports dozens of incidents in which terrorism suspects received federal clearance to buy guns."
"The National Rifle Association, holding its annual convention in Houston this weekend, believes guns are crucial in helping Americans feel secure against terrorism. The group is so adamant that law-abiding citizens be able to purchase firearms unfettered that it is unwilling to support changing the law to keep terror suspects from buying guns." -------
KABA Notes: A) Feelings have little to do with it. The antis can depend on feelings, we'll rely on facts.
B) As for firearms purchases by terror suspects does the phrase innocent until proven guilty mean nothing to you people? |

"Having just wrapped up its annual convention in Houston, the National Rifle Association has reaffirmed its wisdom in naming me, among hundreds, to its 'blacklist' – a designation reserved for gun control advocates."
"Actually, I belong in a special category because the gun control I propose would be total and absolute. Under my plan, the number of Americans with legal possession of guns would be reduced to a few thousand, if that."
"The truth is, I despise the guns and, increasingly, the people who defend their accessibility. Not even the 'just for hunting' and 'just for sport' arguments sway me. As a citizen of the most homicidal country on the planet –- and, not coincidentally, the highest per capita ownership of firearms –- how can I justify the human tragedies as a fair trade-off for the right to stalk game or shoot at targets?" ... -------

Sunday was the final day of the National Rifle Association's annual convention in Houston.
So far it has attracted everyone from gun supporters to politicians and celebrities.
The event is expected to be the city's largest convention of the year.
Saturday night, over 100 protesters gathered outside the hotel that hosted the convention. But those protesters were there to speak out against Congressman Tom DeLay, who has been accused of ethics violations.
DeLay gave last night's keynote address. He said addressing the convention was the highlight of his career.
Monday the NRA board of directors is expected to elect its second female president. Sandra Froman said she plans to use the position to emphasize women's issues, especially self-defense. |

"Over Easter Break this year, I had the unfortunate bad luck of having my car broken into while it sat in a monitored New Jersey garage (I'm lucky the vehicle was still there). The thieves stole my CD player, emergency money I kept in the glove compartment, and a huge chunk of dignity. I had never felt so violated. QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. — Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888). |
