Seemingly overnight, a large segment of America has gone insane. We’re not talking about the culture of paranoia and safety that has metastasized in the wake of COVID-19 hysteria. We’re talking about the ideological shift, particularly on cultural issues, that has occurred since the start of the Obama Administration.

To pick an easy example, it would have been fairly uncontroversial even five years ago to say that men should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports, regardless of what they might subjectively “identify as.” And yet, this is now a subject contention across a number of sports, including mixed martial arts and powerlifting.

According to a news release from Thompson’s office, the letter was signed by 101 of their colleagues.

Switzerland has granted political asylum to a woman from Turkey who killed her husband in an act of self-defense.

Yasemin Çakal in 2014 killed his husband Özkan Kaynaklı, who had been systematically violent with her. Put in prison after the killing, she was released in July 2017, after the court concluded that there was no reason for punishment "for a crime that she committed under fear and thrill."

Later, an upper court overturned the decision and gave a prison sentence to her.

A coalition of 22 states, led by the Republican attorneys general of Arizona and Louisiana, is urging the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to again rule against California’s controversial attempt to ban high-capacity magazines, after the court agreed to reconsider its decision to rule it unconstitutional.

"California politicians are at it again, convinced that their agendas should override the Constitutional rights of the people," said Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, in a statement, announcing the filing of an amicus brief. "Attempts to undermine the Second Amendment or any of our civil rights and liberties should be met with deep skepticism and vigorous opposition."

CA: Gun control: “There is no reason for hunters or target shooters to use automatic weapons and high capacity ammo clips”

School shootings and other mass shootings typically are carried out with the infamous AR-15 weapon. This is also referred to as assault rifles. They are automatic rapid firing long barrel weapons. The famous variant is the M-16 combat rifle used by military since the Vietnam War.

What I believe should happen with all the variants of the “assault rifle”, is that they should be illegal for civilian possession and use. There are other options for hunting and target shooting. I don’t think they are necessary for hunting ducks or deer. The other sensible controls should be making high capacity ammo clips illegal to manufacture or possess.

House Bill 2510, sponsored by Representative Rachel Prusak (D-37), requires owners or possessors of firearms, to lock up their firearms and impose increased fines and strict liability penalties for failing to do so. This measure imposes one-size fits all government-mandated standards for storing a firearm, rendering a person’s firearm useless when needed for self-defense. This is a matter of personal responsibility, not government oversight. HB 2510 requires firearms to be locked when not in use, even at home, and during transportation. Failing to do so could cost you $500-$2,000 and result in misdemeanor charges for violations, which are imposed on each firearm.

A bill that would restrict state, county and city officers from helping enforce new federal gun laws will make it onto the West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee in the coming week.

The West Virginia Legislature has multiple Second Amendment bills and right-to-bear arms resolutions in the legislative pipeline. Earlier this week, the Senate passed a resolution to block cities and counties from passing anything more restrictive than state law. It passed 33-1.

In 2020, the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted more firearm background checks than any other year since the agency started tracking in 1998.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, gun sales have surged in the United States.

According to the FBI, nearly 39.7 million background checks for gun purchases were conducted in 2020, a 60% increase compared to 2019. This year, there was a record number of background checks in March alone. Three of the weeks are now in the top five spots since tracking started.

A bill sponsored by S.C. Sen. Tom Corbin seeks to classify most able-bodied citizens over 17 as members of an unorganized militia to protect them from any new federal gun laws. This bill is similar to others introduced throughout the country that attempt to support and strengthen the Second Amendment in the face of threats to our right to keep and bear arms.

There are currently no charges filed against a woman who police say shot and killed an ex-boyfriend who was trying to get into her apartment Wednesday afternoon in Central Lubbock.

There is an indication there will not be any charges against her.

Police say 26-year-old Selena Carrion was punched in the face before her ex left her apartment and came back. The boyfriend, 26-year-old Leroy Hammond-Williams, is said to have kicked in the door and grabbed her as she ran upstairs.

That is when, police say, Carrion shot and killed him.

Now in the first legislative session since the massacres, Patrick is prioritizing bills that would expand protections for gun owners and sellers.

The shift is one example of an apparent GOP retreat from promises to consider gun reform in wake of the shootings that killed 30 people.

It highlights the political sway gun interests maintain in Texas, even as polls indicate a majority of voters would support stricter firearm laws.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, which represents the firearms industry, estimated that 8.4 million people purchased a gun for the first time in 2020. Interestingly, newer gun owners are more likely to identify as liberal than long-standing gun owners. Membership in groups such as Liberal Gun Owners has surged. And if their numbers grow, they could shake up the long-standing linkages between gun rights politics and the Republican Party — especially amid the recent bankruptcy of the National Rifle Association.

More and more communities are looking at becoming Second Amendment Sanctuaries, but what exactly does that mean?

“They just feel proud to be able to carry that flag,” said Robert Kilcollins, a Fort Fairfield town counselor. “I probably take it more for that than for the resolution. I don’t know but if this is all it took to give the American people hope...”
