SAF Says Virginia Tech Case Underscores Importance of Second Amendment Right

"Alarming new details about Virginia Tech gunman Cho Seung-Hui underscore the importance of a citizen's individual right to keep and bear arms, the Second Amendment Foundation said today."

"'There were abundant warning signs that Cho posed a serious threat to the campus community,' said SAF founder Alan Gottlieb, 'yet here he was running loose and committing mayhem. And all that seems to be on the minds of many in the media and at the offices of gun control extremists is figuring out how to exploit this horrible tragedy to erode and eventually destroy the right, and the means, of self-defense.'" ...

"FEW tragedies make their victims feel more helpless than multiple-victim shootings. Imagine the terror: unable to escape, simply waiting for the killer."

"With 32 murdered, the Virginia Tech attack this week left more people dead than the two previous most deadly shootings: the 1991 Luby's Cafeteria massacre in Texas, which left 23 people dead, and the shooting at a California McDonald's in 1984 in which 21 people were killed."

"Of course, these horrors are hardly unique to the US, and Australians need no reminding. In 1996 Martin Bryant killed 35 people at Port Arthur in Tasmania. In the last half-dozen years, European countries including France, Germany and Switzerland have experienced multiple-victim shootings. ..." ...

"Amazing. These people don't even know what it is they want to ban. And she's their 'leader.' What an incompetent fraud. In any other professional field, this would be considered malpractice."

"From your legislation, Congressthing McCarthy, which you apparently neither read nor understood, but insisted on banning anyway:"

"'(36) Barrel Shroud- The term 'barrel shroud' means a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel of a firearm so that the shroud protects the user of the firearm from heat generated by the barrel, but does not include a slide that encloses the barrel, and does not include an extension of the stock along the bottom of the barrel which does not encircle or substantially encircle the barrel.'"

"As the nation debates whether more guns or fewer can prevent tragedies like the Virginia Tech Massacre, a notable anniversary passed last month in a Georgia town that witnessed a dramatic plunge in crime and violence after mandating residents to own firearms."

"In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of 'Wild West' showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender." ...

"In the wake of this week's tragic shooting rampage at Virginia Tech, we are witnessing a lot of hand-wringing by politicians who acknowledge that the flooding of America with easily available handguns is a problem, but contend that the overwhelming power of the gun lobby prevents us from doing anything about it. In fact, there's a great deal we can do. For one thing, we can unshackle our law enforcement officers and lawyers by allowing them to use data on 'crime guns' to stop the small minority of gun dealers that supply America's criminals with their weapons." ...

"The victim, whose name was withheld by authorities, told deputies that he returned to his boat and found someone burglarizing it. Sheriff's Office reports said the victim was then stabbed by the burglar. The victim told investigators that he was able to get his gun and shoot the suspect three times in the legs while both were still on the boat." ...

"On Monday, as the news of the Virginia Tech shootings was unfolding, I went into my advanced constitutional law seminar to find one of my students upset. My student, Tara Wyllie, has a permit to carry a gun in Tennessee, but she isn't allowed to have a weapon on campus. That left her feeling unsafe. 'Why couldn't we meet off campus today?' she asked."

"Virginia Tech graduate student Bradford Wiles also has a permit to carry a gun, in Virginia. But on the day of the shootings, he would have been unarmed for the same reason: Like the University of Tennessee, where I teach, Virginia Tech bans guns on campus." ...

"The worst slaughter in modern day America rocked the sleepy town of Blacksburg, Va., and the entire nation soon felt the pain. ..."

"But as always happens when some lunatic goes over the edge with a gun, the anti-gun folks and opportunist politicians use the tragedy to try to put more restrictions on an American's right to bear arms. And it is a right. It says so right in the Constitution. True, the founders likely did not envision that right extended to a warped college kid wanting to purchase a 9 mm handgun and ammo for $570 so he could shoot up his classmates. The question is, though, would stricter gun control laws have prevented that from happening? The answer is a resounding 'who knows?'" ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Nearly as many Americans are killed by guns "every single day" as died in the horrific shootings at Virginia Tech, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday as his national coalition to combat illegal weapons on city streets expanded to 214 mayors.

"What happened in Blacksburg was a terrible tragedy," the mayor said at a press conference in Jersey City with 27 New Jersey mayors and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

"Thirty-two people were murdered. But if you take a look, 30 people are murdered every single day in America. It's spread across 50 states, so it isn't a newsworthy event."

The group, while noting the college killer bought at least one gun legally, said the massacre would spotlight their cause.

"In the wake of the horrific bloodbath this week at Virginia Tech, the time is again at hand for another painful national debate over guns in the United States and the laws meant to regulate their availability and use."

"Already, gun advocates and those who favor stiff gun control laws are rallying their forces and brushing off their equally intractable positions as they lie in wait for each other and the nation’s politicians to open their mouths on the firearms issue. That’s where the painful part comes in. As far as the extreme ends of the two divergent groups are concerned, there is little or no middle ground and anyone who is not totally in favor of their particular argument is, by default, totally against them.
