"Facts. Tricky little buggers. Truth be told, they’re easily manipulated. For example, over at Oregon’s registerguard.com, Democratic State Senator Floyd Prozanski asserts that 'According to Oregon State Police data, an average of 180 gun purchases were denied each month over the past three years. In the same period, more than 21,400 lawful transfers occurred monthly. That’s right: Each month 21,400 lawful gun transfers took place with background checks. It works!' Wait. That’s an awful small number of people denied a gun purchase, statistically speaking. Pish-posh says our Floyd . . ." ... |

"Today’s Seattle Times coverage of a weekend murder-suicide in Pierce County has brought out the anti-Second Amendment crowd, and watch for this tragic case to become another anecdote for the gun prohibition lobby as it pushes its political agenda."
"However, their attempt might hit a speed bump, considering that a new Pew Research report ... shows there has been a major shift in the public attitude about gun control versus gun rights. According to the Pew report, more people believe it is important to protect the rights of gun owners (52%) than to place additional controls on them (46%). The report also said support for gun control has fallen, whether you believe crime in the United States has dropped or not." ... |

"To say that the agenda-driven media often attempts to portray NRA and gun owners in a negative light is an understatement."
"Some ignorant writers and political commentators try to label NRA as extremists; or worse. Others claim that gun owners exercising their right to carry will resurrect the 'Old West' and that laws recognizing this right 'seem almost designed to encourage violence.'"
"The actions of NRA members and gun owners across America prove these bigoted opinions wrong on a daily basis. However, the disparity between the anti-gun fever dream and reality is at its most acute each year when NRA members and gun owners gather for the NRA Annual Meetings." ... |

"'The rifle is a noble weapon. It brings us pleasures that no scatter-gunner can ever know. A shotgun takes you into cultivated fields, or into those narrow wastes within sight and sound of civilization. But the rifle entices its bearer into primeval forests, into mountains and deserts untenanted by man. To him in whom the primitive virtues of courage, energy and love of adventure have not been sapped, there is scarce a joy comparable to roaming at will through wild regions, viewing the glories of the unspoiled earth, and feeling the inexpressible thrill of manliness sore-tested by privation and hazard, but armed and undismayed.' – Horace Kephart"

The scope, a Bushnell 3.5-21 HDMR that had served valiantly at the Bushnell Brawl. A scope that’s so good, it’s going to get a nearly perfect review once I write it up. The rifle? "Living 'behind enemy lines' sucks. Thanks to 'assault weapons bans' (AWB), shooters in ... 'slave states' can’t take advantage of their Constitutionally protected right to sample the latest in firearms technology. The only guns [legally] available are often less accurate firearms that cost more money. And so the good folks at Ares Defense set out to enable even those citizens living in those awful places to have access to the very best in modern firearms. Although it looks like the unholy union of a rifle and a shotgun, the result could well be the best AWB-compliant firearm configuration on sale today. "If Samuel Colt had lived long enough to see it, the post-Civil War slogan, 'Abe Lincoln may have freed all men, but Sam Colt made them equal,' was probably something in which the gun inventor would have reveled. And what motivated the writer to make this Mufasa-like 'it is time' pronouncement? 'A striking report released Friday by the Pew Research Center revealed that 'for the first time, more Americans say that protecting gun rights is more important than controlling gun ownership, 52 percent to 46 percent.' That leads Blow to conclude, 'One may begrudge and bemoan the fact, but it is hard to deny it: the N.R.A. appears to be winning this round.' No happy dance please. "Senate Bill 941, which would require background checks on firearm sales between private individuals in Oregon, produced the predictable howls from the pro-gun lobby, which has grown accustomed to intimidating politicians into bending to its will."
"But the state senators got it right in approving a measure that will close a loophole while depriving no eligible person of the right to purchase a gun."

That means gun purchasers would have to follow the same rules — and meet the same requirements — now in place for people buying firearms from licensed dealers or at gun shows." ... |

"For all their collective wisdom, it might have been better if our Founding Fathers had written as much about 'responsibilities' as 'rights,' particularly when they added the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution."
"Perhaps they innately understood something we have lost sight of more than 200 years later: The two must co-exist. Rights uncoupled from responsibilities quickly collapse into chaos, then anarchy."

"Public opinion regarding the balance between gun control and protecting gun rights has flipped in the last ten years according to a survey by Pew Research. Not only that, but trends show this change continuing into the foreseeable future. In 2004 60% of Americans said gun control was more important than protecting the rights of gun owners. Today 52% of Americans say the opposite; that protecting the rights of Americans to keep and bear arms per the Second Amendment to the Constitution is more important than increased gun control. This is not only a major paradigm shift, but will have profound policy implications." ... |

"For most of the 1990s and the subsequent decade, a substantial majority of Americans believed it was more important to control gun ownership than to protect gun owners’ rights. But in December 2014, the balance of opinion flipped: For the first time, more Americans say that protecting gun rights is more important than controlling gun ownership, 52% to 46%."

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? [...] The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!" —Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (Chapter 1 "Arrest") |
