The change of seasons is in the air again, the cold of winter slowly yields its grasp on the mountains and valleys giving way to spring. Many people pass by this season completely unaware of the fun and challenging hunting opportunities that lie within. Many years ago, during a hike through the high Rockies, I caught a glimpse of an animal unfamiliar to me. The Yellow-Bellied Marmot, also known as a woodchuck, rockchuck, groundhog or whistle pig — basically, a giant squirrel. |

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction. The government over-reach in the last two months is quickly reading like best-selling dystopian novels foreshadowing our current times. As New Jerseyans continue to be systematically denied access to firearms for self-protection, Governor Murphy has singularly and intentionally used his monopoly of violent force to silence the voices of millions of gun owners. |

Democratic Congressmen, ever the bastion of decency, virtue, and level-headedness, have spearheaded a push for unconstitutional Red Flag laws in the next round of stimulus bills. Because if there's one thing a county needs in times of turmoil, it's virtue-signaling and political grandstanding. Indeed, this is a truly despicable move by Democrats in Congress hell-bent on fully eroding American citizens' right to due process while simultaneously establishing the framework for full-on confiscation. |

The old saying goes that a man’s house is his castle. Lately, however, I’m sure to some it feels more like a prison. Most of us are working from home now, maybe stuck in a house with the kids, trying to be productive in some way. Postponed are the days of heading to the range with the gang, but that doesn’t mean our love and pride for the Second Amendment should wither. There are other ways to represent that with which we all hold dear.

Starting April 16, the Department of Natural Resources invites anyone interested in deer management in Wisconsin to provide feedback on preliminary recommendations for the 2020 deer hunting season structure. Every county in Wisconsin has a County Deer Advisory Council. The councils give the people of Wisconsin significant input into local deer management. The meetings help shape the 2020 deer hunting seasons and annual antlerless harvest quotas, and the CDACs provide the preliminary recommendations.

I’m not trying to sell anyone on a firearm made by the Remington Arms Company, but since my favorite shotgun is a Remington, when I see a headline featuring the name of this storied gun maker, I take more than a curious glance at the script under the title. The shotgun I’ve owned the longest, use the most and shoot the best is my Remington Wingmaster 870. When people comment about my shooting or even the “patina” which shows on the barrel and stock of the old gun, I just tell them, “It’s very well trained.”

Gabby Giffords’ husband, Mark Kelly (D), is running against Sen. Martha McSally (R) in Arizona, but is not mentioning his support for California-style gun controls during his campaign.
Breitbart News reported that Kelly went to Tucson, Arizona’s Diamondback Police Supply in February 2013 to show how easy it was to acquire a gun. This effort coincided with he and his wife’s post-Sandy Hook push for universal background checks. Kelly was not allowed to buy a gun because he did not have the proper ID required by the background check system that had been in place since 1998.

As we get older, we must keep in mind that we can still be a target for criminal attack. In fact, we may become even more of a target as the years catch up with us. The crooks see the gray hair, the wrinkles and figure that we will be less likely to resist and less likely to be armed. Age may cause us to have physical problems to deal with, but many of them can be overcome. We owe it to ourselves and our families to be as tough a target as is humanly possible. Here are a few ideas to help older defensive shooters deal with their issues.

When I was just a pup one of my favorite TV shows was Wanted Dead or Alive starring Steve McQueen as bounty hunter Josh Randall. McQueen carried a Model 92 Winchester Mares Leg (shortened barrel and stock cut off just behind the pistol grip area). Although the Model 92 was chambered for pistol cartridges, McQueen’s belt held .45-70 shells — apparently for dramatic effect. One of my first cap guns was a replica of the TV gun made by Marx toys. Many a desperado was brought to justice on the family farm.

Five people were killed, dozens more were injured in Chicago as gun violence continues to plague the city even under a statewide stay-at-home order. As the city works to curb COVID-19, community activist Andrew Holmes said it’s important to tackle gun violence as well. “We can’t fall asleep at the wheel and we can’t turn our heads backward to this gun violence because it’s continuing every day and it hasn’t stopped,” he said.

Today the company is part of the High Precision Systems conglomerate. This is a holding company underneath the umbrella of Rostec, a state-owned company established in 2007 to consolidate companies of strategic importance in advance of an IPO. In November 2017, Rostec began looking for a buyer of its stake in the conglomerate. All told, 14 holding companies are involved, with 11 in the defense and military industries. As such, Tula is officially part of a nonprofit organization under Russian law. Other than common ownership by High Precision Systems, it is unrelated to the similarly named Tula Arms Plant.

Personally, I have always been fond of the lever action rifle finding it to be the most pragmatic of design for general use. While no doubt the notion of a "general purpose rifle" goes to the Scout Rifle, and for the definition Cooper assigned to it, yet my standard was somewhat different. Despite being an avid outdoorsman and hunter, my life has been spent mostly in and, around an urban environment of one type or another working. Early in my career as executive protection, use of a long arm was centered around a vehicle.

Jay Inslee to lift restrictions on fishing, gun sales, worshiping and other activities prohibited under his stay-at-home order, which Sheriff Brad Thurman says are “restricting citizens’ rights.” Thurman said he requested the commissioners adopt a resolution Tuesday requesting that Inslee rescind some of the proclamations mainly as a statement to citizens of where officials stand. |

When a good friend of mine drew a once-in-a-generation Oregon elk tag, he wanted to hunt with the rifle his father gave him when he was in his early teens. The only problem, which is quite common with rifles that were built 20-something years back, is that the old .270 didn’t shoot worth a damn.

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.— Benjamin Franklin Historical Review of Pennsylvania. [Note: This sentence was often quoted in the Revolutionary period. It occurs even so early as November, 1755, in an answer by the Assembly of Pennsylvania to the Governor, and forms the motto of Franklin's "Historical Review," 1759, appearing also in the body of the work. — Frothingham: Rise of the Republic of the United States, p. 413. ] |
