"The April 16 guest column by Heidi Yewman, "Gun advocates ignore lessons of Columbine," was an entertaining reminder of the glory days of the gun control movement. The headline refers to the lessons of Columbine, which Yewman obviously interprets as a need for more and stricter gun laws, including background checks at gun shows, a ban on so-called assault weapons and the ability to sue gun makers. Let's take these one at a time."

"The governor is taking full advantage of his massive campaign war chest to fill the airwaves with the first round of attack ads at a time when Topinka is still trying to recover financially from the cost of the Republican primary. One Blagojevich ad attacks Topinka for supporting President Bush's tax cuts, another for opposing a hike in the minimum wage and a third uses Topinka's own words to ridicule her opposition to additional gun control laws."

"Some two weeks after a bill was signed into law allowing Nebraskans to carry concealed weapons, Lincoln Mayor Coleen Seng said Thursday that she would seek to ban them in the capital."

"The action underscores an apparent hole in the concealed carry law, which does not preclude cities from enacting their own bans."

"The concealed weapon bill is a very real threat to the security of citizens... I support the constitutional right of citizens to own weapons, but passage of the concealed weapons law unnecessarily puts Lincoln at risk for increased confrontations involving guns."
