A man accused of fatally shooting a 9-year-old girl when he was robbed at a Houston ATM in 2022 has been indicted on a murder charge in her death.

Tuesday’s indictment against Tony Earls comes nearly two years after another grand jury declined to indict him in the death of Arlene Alvarez.

Gwen Alvarez, the girl’s mother, said the indictment brought her family some relief, knowing it is the “first step of receiving justice for my daughter.”

...

Authorities said Wednesday an arrest warrant has been issued for Earls, who has been a fugitive for about a year now on an unrelated assault charge.

The video continues outside the store, showing the 42-year-old clerk confronting one of the teens as he leaves on foot. That is where the footage ends.

The witness, who chose to remain anonymous, claims that the teens walked across a grassy field behind the building, and Maknojia followed them. Words were exchanged, and the teens made “an obscene gesture” at the store clerk, who then allegedly jumped into his car and pulled alongside them as they were jogging off, according to reporting by local station KRPC-2.

The witness remembered hearing several gunshots and saw one of the teens firing on Maknojia’s car.

The Border Crisis and Crime: Considerations for the Armed Citizen

Pertaining to the criminal threat, make no mistake: we already have plenty of bad actors domestically, so the criminal element that is flooding over the border is adding gasoline to the fire. The truth is, the vast majority of these people are likely fleeing desperate situations and may, indeed, be searching for a better life. The threat remains in the small but present percentage that is of nefarious intent. Even if the percentage of bad actors is incredibly small, the sheer magnitude of the influx points to the undeniable reality that many criminal actors have infiltrated. How does, and how should, this impact the decisions of the armed citizen?

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! In the late 1800s, René Galand invented a peculiar pocket revolver originally marketed for cyclists to defend against aggressive dogs. Dubbed the “Velo-Dog” by combining the French words for “bicycle” and “dog”, it featured a shrouded hammer for double-action fire only. Many later models lacked a trigger guard entirely, with the trigger folding flush into the frame when not in use. Early Velo-Dogs were chambered in a proprietary 5.75mm cartridge slightly less powerful than .22LR, though .22LR and .25ACP became common options after 1900.

The U.S. Supreme Court recently announced that it will hear VanDerStok v. Garland, a case that challenges the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) so-called “ghost gun” rule, later this year.

The ATF rule, initially issued in 2022, treats some firearms parts and part kits as if they are actually functional firearms. It requires that these parts, such as a frame or receiver, be treated like they are a completed firearm.

Ed.: Vanderstock is an FPC case, joined by SAF on appeal.

Senate Bill 1146, proposed by Sen. Dan Laughlin, R-Erie, aims to clarify Pennsylvania’s Uniform Firearm Act regarding medical marijuana cardholders. Current law does not exempt medical users from being considered unlawful users, potentially placing them in legal jeopardy. Although enforcement is not rigorous, instances like Warren County District Attorney Rob Greene being asked to forfeit his firearm license upon revealing his medical marijuana card highlight the issue.

Members of Grass Roots North Carolina will be lobbying lawmakers on the opening day to pass “constitutional carry” for North Carolina. The gun rights group has been working behind the scenes, collecting signatures and on Wednesday will deliver a hand truck with thousands of petitions to Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger urging him to support a proposal to enshrine the freedom to carry a concealed firearm without a permit.

In the last legislative session, lawmakers repealed North Carolina’s longstanding pistol purchase permit requirement and were quick to override Governor’s Roy Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 41.

During Varghese’s opening statement, Judge Darkeh repeatedly interrupted him. The judge even went as far as telling the defense not to reference the Second Amendment in the proceedings.

“Do not bring the Second Amendment into this courtroom. It doesn’t exist here. So you can’t argue Second Amendment. This is New York,” the judge said.

A post on social media showing a photo of the judge and her statement has garnered more than 642 thousand views as of April 23 and commenters are scratching their heads.

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to take up a Biden administration appeal over the regulation of difficult-to-trace ghost guns that had been struck down by lower courts.

The justices by a 5-4 vote had previously intervened to keep the regulation in effect during the legal fight. Ghost guns, which lack serial numbers, have been turning up at crime scenes with increasing regularity.

Students across the state are massively disappointed by our Tennessee House of Representatives' decision to pass HB1202, the “arming teachers” bill. We did all we could, and still our legislature refused to listen to its own constituents.

We wrote open letters, called, emailed, snail-mailed, visited offices, signed petitions, walked out of school twice, marched, rallied, educated, and posted videos. We gave all we could, and still our representatives did not listen. We got nowhere.

Students on college campuses in Florida are used to carrying laptops and iPads on them, but should they be allowed to carry guns?

Florida lawmaker Randy Fine said 'yes' and announced on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that he plans to introduce a bill to end universities as gun-free zones and provide funding for students who want to carry a gun, saying, in particular, it’s time for Jewish students to start carrying.

Carlos Ruiz is a student at FSW and he supports students like himself being given permission to carry guns on campus.

A1F: You wrote this book during a very interesting time, as you finished your book just after the NRA-backed Second Amendment case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen (2022) was decided.

Cottrol: Yes, indeed. It’s rare for a historian to have a stop-the-presses moment. Basically, we had this with Bruen. We had written a book that basically takes us from the founding to Heller (2008) and McDonald (2010), but then we saw Bruen coming and we thought, My goodness, we can’t omit Bruen. This is incredible. They’re talking about the right to carry outside the home.

However, Circuit Judge Dan Ballou, citing the Supreme Court case, dismissed the charge against Gunn.

Ballou ruled the prosecution had not shown “that the Nation’s historical tradition of regulating the possession of firearms extends to an individual carrying a firearm on property not utilized as a school, during a time when neither students nor school employees were present, and with no other alleged criminal acts being committed, regardless of the ownership of the property at issue.”

Hoskins said he and Gunn were happy with the decision.

Why, you might be asking yourself, as I asked the people who introduced this bill, would a criminal take a ghost gun to a firearms dealer for a serial number or a background check if that person was going to get busted? The answer is, that’s not the point. The point is, these guns frequently make their way to other people and then are used in crimes. It’s not ideal to have untraceable guns used in crimes. We vote on this Wednesday, April 24, and I’m in full support.

Tennessee House Republicans on Tuesday passed legislation to allow some trained teachers and school staff to carry handguns despite pleas from Democrats, students, and gun-reform advocates to defeat the bill.

Dozens of protestors in the galleries began chanting "Blood on your hands" as soon as the legislation passed, prompting Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton to order state troopers to clear the galleries. Many protestors continued to chant and stomp down at lawmakers as the House floor fell into chaos over parliamentary issues.

To all U.S. gun owners, Do Not Travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory located southeast of the Bahamas. If you have already made plans, reconsider your destination.

SUMMARY: Since November 2022, at least eight American tourists have faced “firearms prosecutions” for inadvertently having ammunition in their luggage. In the past, tourists had been able to pay a fine, but as of a judge’s ruling in February of this year, violators are subject to severe prison time.

This case highlights one of many families affected by gun violence. According to the city’s Office of the Controller, “Homicides, the vast majority of which are committed with a gun, have increased every year since 2016, while non-fatal shootings have increased every year since 2017.” Additionally, 2021 was cited as Philadelphia’s “deadliest year,” with 562 homicides. Similarly, in Pittsburgh, there were 71 homicides in 2022, a record in the last 10 years.

Given this information, Pennsylvanians may want to reevaluate the UFA and its priorities, and stop biting the bullet.

The Founders’ Case for a Strong Militia Over Standing Armies

One of the primary reasons the founders wanted a strong militia system with a well-armed general public was to minimize or even eliminate the need for a large, permanent standing army, even in times of peace.

Most people in the founding generation were extremely wary of standing armies. They were often referred to as “the bane of liberty.”

They knew this from experience. From the standing armies that led to the massacre in Boston, to the gun control scheme that kicked off the war for independence – they lived it firsthand. As colonial resistance to taxes and other policies grew in 1774, the British responded by attempting to disarm the colonists.

Ghost guns are firearms that are assembled by their owners from individual parts.

Some public school teachers in Tennessee could gain new powers to carry concealed guns into the classroom, a year after a deadly school shooting in the state’s capital city stirred impassioned debate about the best ways to curb such violence.

The Republican-led Legislature in Tennessee gave final approval to the legislation Tuesday, just days after Republican governors in Iowa and Nebraska signed laws that also expand the potential for armed personnel in schools.

Knox County Schools administrators have not made a decision whether to allow teachers or staff members to carry concealed guns in classrooms. The new law passed this week has not been signed by Gov. Bill Lee. If Lee does not sign the bill within 10 days, excluding Sundays, it will become law.

"At Knox County Schools, we are fortunate to have a highly trained, armed security officer in every school. We are aware that the bill is headed to the governor’s desk, and we will be reviewing it," Knox County Schools spokesperson Carly Harrington told Knox News.

Metro Nashville Public Schools administrators quickly announced the district will not allow teachers or staff members to carry concealed handguns on its campuses.
