"LaPierre made a guest appearance at last week's Mid-Hudson Friends of NRA banquet in Fishkill. His timing was perfect, albeit planned well in advance. This year's "Friends" banquet was No. 10 for this small, grass- roots committee -- a major milestone. LaPierre came to town to help them celebrate and to extend a personal thank you for a decade's worth of hard work."

FULL STORY BELOW:

Guns seized by the police would no longer be automatically destroyed if the House has its way.

The chamber passed a bill that would allow the police to auction off any antique firearms made before 1900 or "curios and relics" made before 1950 that are "novel, rare, bizarre" or "associated with some historical figure, period or event." The auction would take place once the guns are no longer needed as evidence.

The state police, Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association and National Rifle Association all support the measure, according to testimony yesterday. The bill now goes to the Senate.

"Obviously, council members are itching for a court fight. I wish them luck, but even in the unlikely event of a confrontation with the feds in Arcata, I don't expect their protest or the rest to get very far, at least not in the current courts. Federal law trumps local laws under our Constitution and, so far, the higher courts have handed Attorney General John Ashcroft's office considerable latitude in detaining, deporting, eavesdropping and other civil liberties intrusions."

"Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia underscored that point in a March 18 speech at John Carroll University in suburban Cleveland. 'The Constitution just sets minimums,' he said, according to the Associated Press. 'Most of the rights that you enjoy go way beyond what the Constitution requires.' "

"Indeed. Anyone who thinks we may have too many rights already cannot be expected to fight very hard to hold onto them, even when the erosion may extend beyond wartime needs."

"Conservatives claim to support the Bill of Rights, yet Bush's Patriot Act has essentially eliminated our 4th Amendment right of privacy, and our 5th Amendment right of due process. Bush has pushed for greater federal involvement in education, in violation of the 10th Amendment. He has announced his support of continuing Clinton's assault weapon ban, in violation of the 2nd Amendment. Bush said he was against campaign finance reform, yet signed the bill, violating the 1st Amendment."
