Patriot Day...the shot heard round the world (Blog)

"Today marks the 229th anniversary of an event that gets talked of a bit in primary school (the shot heard round the world) but seldom mentioned afterwards. Most people think of the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City. Some think back on the murder of civilians by the federal government in Waco, Texas. If the origin of the 19th of April's significance is ever mentioned it's only in passing."

"But today marks the day when common citizens with paramilitary arms fired on troops of their own government when said government moved to implement gun control. Let that sink in for a moment: the reason the first shots in the war for American independence were fired were because the citizens of Massachusetts were violently opposed to gun control. )Yes - that Massachusetts!)"

"This is the largest group of nonvoting people out there.... They are 3-1/2 times the [number] of NASCAR dads and double the [number] of soccer moms, which is a huge proportion of the electorate."

-------
And about one-fourth the number of gun owners, if we would all pull together...

KABA Note: Unfortunately it seems gun owners cannot agree on a candidate. Some will definitely vote for gun-grabbing, freedom-trampling George W. Bush again, while a great many others have had it with Bush and the GOP and will vote their conscience this year.

"The concept of wasting your vote by voting for a third party is making a comeback in this election year. I'm going to talk about wasting your vote, too, but there's a catch. I'm going to tell you that, unless you live in a closely-contested state or district, voting for either major-party candidate is wasting your vote. The conventional wisdom on third-party candidates is wrong -- and here's why." ...

"Articles about how the current Republican administration is censoring free speech (among other evils), how to write congress to prevent oil drilling in ANWR, how to get more money for education, and goofy stories with pictures of kids during the New Hampshire Democratic Primary accompanied by slobbering adoring praise of the Democratic candidates. Website links to left-wing groups such as People For The American Way, the U.C. Berkeley Labor Center for Young Workers, NOW, various labor unions including the AFL-CIO, and anti-gun groups. "The cops aren't embarrassed."

"The cops haven't been disciplined."

This is the kind of repugnant case that my husband, a peace officer, says makes him embarrassed to wear a police uniform. " 'Democracy demands from all, and especially from leaders, strict vigilance regarding compliance with the law and transparency,' Fox told a news conference."

" 'It also demands honesty in any event and to behave with strict devotion to responsible ethics,' Fox said, his anti-corruption drive in tatters following a string of political scandals this year."

"His comments came a day after thousands took to the streets in the city of Cuernavaca, to demand the resignation of Morelos Gov. Sergio Estrada, who is being probed in connection with two murders."

"Schools that need to check out a potential teacher and churches seeking information about youth group volunteers sometimes wait months in Missouri to receive the results of a state background check."

"The time on hold can mean scaled-back church camps, delays in certifying teachers and school bus drivers or — in another area where background checks are required — an even longer wait for couples trying to adopt a child."

"Part of the delay stems from the sheer volume of requests to the agencies that examine individuals' personal histories for crimes and other significant details. But there's a new factor — Missouri's concealed guns law, which has poured thousands of requests for background checks into the system."

-------
Here's a novel idea: blame citizens who want to exercise their rights and defend themselves against armed thugs for taking away resources for youth camps and churches.

We would submit that maybe if Missouri restored freedom and allowed its citizens to carry concealed firearms without treating each and every gun owner like a potential criminal, churches and youth groups wouldn't have to wait as long for background checks.

It's absolutely unconscionable that this reporter treats this story as just another homicide, instead of a self-defense case. "In a county where there usually is only one prosecutable homicide a year," the report laments, "Bradford County District Attorney Stephen Downs pointed out Friday that there have been four shooting deaths within the past month in Bradford County."

A man was in the process of breaking into someone's home and was shot for his trouble. To lump this in with "prosecutable homicides" is absurd!

-------
"A Chemung man was shot to death Friday morning after breaking into another man's home in Towanda -- the fourth shooting death in the county in a month and the second in two days." ...

"Arthur Croteau, 50, whose estranged wife was at the shooting scene, broke into Tim Philmeck's apartment at 112 Bridge St. in Towanda by forcing open a kitchen window, state police said."

"When he realized that the window was being opened, Philmeck, 57, retrieved a .357-caliber Magnum from an end table, according to a police report."

"Police said that as Croteau approached Philmeck, Philmeck shot him about three times in the hand, chest and neck. It was unknown whether Croteau brandished a weapon."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A man convicted of a lesser charge in the death of a teen beat with a brick has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors charged 21-year-old Kenji Littlejohn with murder, but a Cherokee County jury Wednesday convicted him on the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Littlejohn testified he beat 16-year-old Kenneth Allen because the teen pulled a gun on him in December 2002.

The two were arguing after a basketball game, Littlejohn said.

After the verdict, Littlejohn apologized to Allen's grandmother, Mary Williams, saying he didn't intentionally kill her grandson.
