A Moscow City Court overturned a district court’s ruling and released Yana Gurcheva in March. She was sentenced in November 2017 to six years in prison for fatally stabbing her partner in the chest during an altercation in which he strangled her in front of her children.
“Most often women are convicted for [self] defense, or they are found guilty for exceeding the limits of necessary defense," the Mediazona news website quoted women’s rights lawyer Mari Davtyan as saying Monday. Gurcheva’s “surprising” acquittal was the first instance in her memory in which a Russian court sided with the woman, Davtyan added. |

Today, the House Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider anti-gun House Bill 366. HB 366 would make it a class A or B misdemeanor if a person is guilty of the unsafe storage of a firearm should they intentionally or recklessly store or leave a loaded firearm within the reach or easy access of an unauthorized person and where such person obtains the firearm. HB 366 is legislation in search of a problem that doesn’t currently exist. |

The Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and four other plaintiffs are suing the state over a ban on large capacity gun magazines.
The federation, a gun association, several sporting goods stores and a woman from Bethel allege that a new law putting a cap on magazines violates the rights of gun owners under the Vermont Constitution.
The new state statute, signed into law by Republican Gov. Phil Scott March 30, bans the sale, possession or transfer of long-gun magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds and handgun magazines with a capacity greater than 15 rounds. The cap does not apply to law enforcement. |

But with Parkland still reeling from one of the deadliest school shootings in modern American history, where Nikolas Cruz used an AR-15 to kill 17 people, Kashuv's tweets didn't go over well with some students. After several reported Kashuv to school administrators, he was questioned by law enforcement over the gun videos.
Now the 16-year-old and his many supporters on the right claim he was improperly or illegally detained for exercising his Second Amendment rights. But some of his classmates insist his behavior warranted a call to officials. |

A new law banning high-capacity ammunition magazines in Vermont has drawn a court challenge, with two gun shops, a lobbyist and a group of competitive shooters claiming that the measure is unconstitutional.
“Law-abiding citizens, however, who use firearms in defense of themselves, their families, and their homes, are now barred by Vermont’s new ban from owning and using prohibited, standard-capacity magazines,” the April 18 complaint states. |

Finally, merely posting a message — “do not kill” — will probably not remind anyone bent on doing harm in schools, as if it had merely slipped their mind (“Oh my — I never thought of that!”), and furthermore will not deter either school outsiders or troubled young past/present students, who are still able to legally buy assault guns, and find loopholes to obtain those firearms which are literally designed to kill people, not for hunting or self defense.
End school violence now. We need reasonable gun laws to protect our children, and others. |

Writer Ryan Moore was a confirmed lifelong anti-gun liberal. He even tweeted out a request to President Obama to repeal the Second Amendment in 2012.
But one day, Moore was confronted with a situation that changed his entire perspective on guns to the point where he is now a life member of the NRA.
Moore was literally mugged by reality. |

This fall, Columbia County residents will be asked to vote on Measure 5-270, the Columbia County Second Amendment Preservation Ordinance. Proponents of the measure say they want to stop lawmakers from targeting constitutional rights.
To get the measure on the ballot, gun rights activists petitioned the community, asking voters whether the county should “enact an ordinance that prohibits any infringement of the right to keep and bear arms.” A minimum of 1,190 signatures was required for the initiative to become a ballot measure. |

An eighth-grade student has filed a federal lawsuit accusing his northern Nevada school district of violating his First Amendment rights after he says he was told his pro-gun T-shirt violates the district's dress code.
The suit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Reno alleges the Washoe County School District policy prohibiting depictions of "anything that promotes weapons" is unconstitutional.
It says the discriminatory nature of the policy is underscored by the fact the school district allowed students to participate in recent protests in support of gun control. |

Yet there he allegedly was early Sunday morning - just nine months after his White House arrest - at a Waffle House outside Nashville, Tennessee, in possession of an assault-style rifle that authorities say was used to kill four people and wound several others. That the AR-15 semiautomatic, along with three other guns, had once been confiscated from him by Illinois authorities who recognized the danger only compounds the failure - indeed the absurdity - of policies that make it far too easy to get guns. And that allow weapons designed for war to become everyday commodities. |

Legislation of bad behavior does not eradicate the bad behavior. Legislation of gun possession will only eliminate possession rights for the law-abiding individuals who possessed weapons for personal security. For it is the law-abiding who abide by the law. And the law abiding are not the ones who you are worried about. More importantly to consider in this balance is that law-abiding Americans have used their firearms in self-defense 3.6 times as often as criminals have used them for “gun violence,” according to studies conducted by our the CDC. Moreover, many states already have increased penalties for committing crimes with a gun. These increased penalties have not stopped gun-related crimes. |

Although no absolute, under-21 firearm ban was at issue in those decisions, an advocate for such a ban should avail herself of the premises underlying their holdings. The decisions present historical evidence that, according to the Framers, only those with adequate “civic virtue” are worthy of wielding lethal weapons, and one’s capacity for virtue grows with age. The decisions also translate the Framers’ intuition into modern terms of criminology and neuropsychology, presenting evidence that 18-to-20-year-olds are disproportionately responsible for violent gun crimes, and that their minds house immature impulse-control structures. |
